…Tick. Tack. Tick. Tack.

The rhythmic grinding of black clockwork gears echoed through the frost-covered altar room, vibrating directly against Noël's teeth.

A Chronophage Scout.

It stood twelve feet tall beside the altar, its towering body composed of interlocking brass cogwheels, rusted pendulums, and jagged steel needles. Where its head should have been, a glowing crimson clockface spun counter-clockwise at a violent speed.

Gideon took two steps back, his silver rapier trembling as the air around the altar began to warp.

"What... what is that thing?!" Gideon shouted, his voice cracking slightly. "Its ether signature isn't registered on the System grid!"

"Because it doesn't belong to the System," Noël said softly, adjusting his coat collar.

Ti-ri-ring!

[The Gallery-being 'The Auditor of Ash' has stood up from its seat in shock!]

[The Gallery-being 'The Crowned Ember' is roaring in confusion!]

[The Gallery-being 'The Hollow Cartographer' is frantically scanning the entity's spatial footprint!]

"B-Boss!" Tally squeaked, diving deep inside Noël's vest pocket until only its brass monocle peeked out. "The network feed is flickering! That monster is consuming local timeline data!"

Noël opened his left eye.

His pupil turned a deep, burning violet as the Gyre Eye activated to its maximum threshold.

Through his vision, the Chronophage Scout wasn't just a physical construct. It was an outer entity, a temporal scavenger sent by the Outer Emptiness to consume diverged timelines. In his ghost-memories of the sixth timeline, these scouts were only supposed to appear in the higher realms after Tier 3.

Its arrival here meant his Mnemonic Ledger's eleven Fractures had drawn its attention.

The red clockface on the creature's head stopped spinning. It locked its burning crimson gaze directly onto Noël's chest.

Kuuu-ong!

A wave of localized temporal deceleration erupted from the Scout.

The falling dust motes in the air froze completely. Gideon's body stiffened mid-stride, his eyes widening in horror as his movements slowed to one-tenth of their normal speed. Lyra and Elara fell to their knees, paralyzed by the overwhelming weight of stagnant time.

[Warning! High-Density Temporal Domain detected!]

[All physical and ether movement speed reduced by 90%!]

Only two things remained unaffected inside the temporal lock.

The silver Chronometer of the Unseen Clerk inside Noël's vest pocket... and Noël himself.

Click.

The hands of the silver pocket watch spun backward three full ticks, creating a pocket of isolated time around his frame.

Void-Weaver's Tread.

Pft!

Noël's body blurred, disappearing from his current coordinate and reappearing three meters to the left, right along the Scout's blind spot.

The Chronophage Scout's clockface spun backward violently, its heavy steel arm, a six-foot-long pendulum blade, slashing through the exact space where Noël had been standing a microsecond earlier.

Kaaaa-booom!

The floorboards shattered into pulverized marble, sending ice shards flying across the altar room.

Gideon, still struggling against the 90% speed reduction, stared at Noël's sudden repositioning with a bewildered expression.

"N-Noël... how are you moving at normal speed?!"

"I am delaying the local scan," Noël replied flatly.

He looked at the glowing Sovereign Keystone floating above the altar behind the Scout.

[Item: Sovereign Keystone of House Aethelgard]

[Details: The primary spatial anchor of Trial #9. Claiming the Keystone will instantly conclude the Trial and purge all external entities.]

The clear condition was right there.

Noël didn't need to destroy a twelve-foot outer scavenger with his current Tier 1 stats. He only needed to claim the Keystone.

However, the Scout stood directly between him and the altar, its massive pendulum blade guarding the perimeter.

"Gideon," Noël said clearly, his voice cutting through the grinding clockwork noise.

Gideon gritted his teeth, veins bulging along his neck as he fought the temporal drag.

"S-Speak!"

"Draw its targeting sensor for two seconds."

"Draw its targeting sensor?!" Gideon gasped. "My movement speed is cut by ninety percent! A single strike from that pendulum will vaporize my torso!"

"To be exact, your physical speed is cut by ninety percent," Noël corrected, pointing at his silver rapier. "Your solar ether isn't."

Gideon blinked. His eyes sharpened as he understood Noël's intent.

"Solar Aspect!" Gideon roared, channeling every ounce of his ether into his blade. "Solar Beam!"

Kaaaa-shing!

A blinding beam of pure white-gold solar light erupted from the tip of Gideon's rapier, shooting straight toward the Scout's glowing crimson clockface.

The Chronophage Scout shifted its torso instantly, raising its massive clockwork arm to block the blinding solar beam.

Boom!

White-gold flames exploded across the Scout's brass plating.

That two-second distraction was all Noël needed.

Void-Weaver's Tread!

Pft!

He executed two consecutive spatial steps, blurring through the air and bypassing the Scout's guard entirely. His boots hit the slick altar steps right in front of the floating Sovereign Keystone.

The Chronophage Scout realized the ruse. Its clockface spun backward in a frenzy as it turned its massive pendulum blade toward Noël's spine.

"Die, intruder!" a hollow, metallic screech echoed from the Scout's chest.

Noël didn't look back.

He reached out his right hand and grabbed the glowing Sovereign Keystone.

Whooooosh!

A blinding pillar of golden light erupted from the altar, swallowing the entire room.

Tiiiing!

[Main Trial #9: The Trial of Unmade Men CLEARED!]

[Sovereign Keystone acquired!]

[Initiating Emergency Purge of Unregistered Outer Entity...]

Kaaaa-bang!

The golden pillar of administrative light slammed into the Chronophage Scout. The clockwork construct let out an ear-splitting screech as its brass gears, pendulums, and burning red face dissolved into harmless silver dust.

The frozen manor began to crumble into glowing particles of light as the Trial domain collapsed, preparing to return them to the real world.

Gideon collapsed onto one knee, breathing heavily as the temporal drag vanished. He looked up at Noël, his eyes filled with a complicated weight.

"You knew the Keystone would trigger a System purge," Gideon said softly.

"I read the operational manual," Noël lied.

Noël checked his pocket. The silver Chronometer of the Unseen em had three fresh cracks across its face.

[Mnemonic Ledger: 11 / 60 Fractures]

He closed his left eye, wiping a thin trail of blood from his left nostril, and adjusted his trench coat.

They had survived the Scout, but the Outer Emptiness was officially watching.

He leaned on his right foot, his silver rapier drawn, its white-gold solar ether flickering against the gale. "My ether flow is lagging.""Keep your breathing steady," Noël said, wiping sweat and blood from his chin.
