Whooooosh!

A blinding flash of emerald light consumed the sunken aqueduct chamber, tearing Noël's physical coordinates away from the subterranean drainage grid.

The sensation of spatial transfer was like being dragged backward through ice water.

Thump!

His boots slammed onto a slick marble floor.

The ambient temperature plummeted instantly to thirty degrees below zero. Thick frost coated the towering obsidian pillars of a ruined grand hall. Overhead, massive crystal chandeliers hung frozen mid-shatter, glinting in the pale moonlight filtering through the collapsed dome.

Everything here was frozen in the middle of a disaster. Dust motes, falling debris, even spilled wine cups were suspended in spatial stasis.

"Kuh... it's freezing!" Lyra gasped, her breath blooming into white fog.

Elara shivered, her spear shaft already covered in frost.

Gideon drew his silver rapier, his boots crunching against the ice. "Is this House Aethelgard's ancestral manor?"

"Yes," Noël replied, adjusting his coat. "Or what's left of it."

Tiiiing!

"B-Boss!" Tally squeaked from inside Noël's coat collar. "The viewer count passed five thousand! Higher entities are placing side-bets on whether we survive the first wave!"

Noël ignored the notifications and looked ahead.

At the far end of the hall stood iron doors engraved with a weeping lion. Dozens of translucent specters clad in heavy plate armor stood before them. Their faces were smooth, grey voids without features. Each carried a frosted greatsword humming with dark ether.

[Entity Detected: Echo Soldiers of Aethelgard]

[Classification: Historical Anomaly Specters]

[Special Trait: 'Unacknowledged Existence' (Splits into 2 duplicate entities upon receiving physical or ether damage).]

Gideon took a step forward, solar ether flaring along his rapier.

"I'll draw their aggression! Noël, cover the flanks!"

"Stop."

Noël caught his shoulder.

"They're advancing!" Gideon gritted his teeth. "If they surround us..."

"If you strike them with solar ether, one soldier becomes two," Noël interrupted. "Within two minutes, this hall will hold two hundred Tier-1 specters."

Gideon froze, staring at the specters gliding across the floor.

"Then how do we clear them?"

"We speak their names."

Noël opened his left eye.

His pupil turned deep violet as the Gyre Eye activated.

Through his vision, the specters dissolved into lines of corrupted historical data. In his ghost-memories of the 1st timeline, he had spent weeks memorizing the casualty registries of the erased Aethelgard noble houses.

These specters were not monsters. They were the souls of soldiers whose existences had been scrubbed from history during the 1st Cataclysm.

They fought because the Codex no longer recognized their names.

They were fighting to be remembered.

The lead Echo Soldier raised its frosted greatsword and lunged toward Noël's chest.

Hwiiik!

Lyra screamed. Elara covered her eyes.

Noël didn't dodge or activate Void-Weaver's Tread. He stood firmly and looked into the blank void of its face.

"Captain Julian Vane," he said clearly. "4th Vanguard Division of House Aethelgard."

The giant blade stopped half an inch from his collarbone.

The lead Echo Soldier went rigid. Slowly, its blank face shifted, forming the features of a weathered, scarred man. Tears of light welled in his eyes.

[Entity 'Julian Vane' has been recognized by an observer!]

[Historical Anomaly resolved!]

"Thank... you..." a faint whisper echoed.

Cr-crack!

The soldier's heavy armor shattered into glittering white dust.

Tiiiing!

[You have resolved 1 Echo Soldier!]

[1,000 Tribute acquired.]

Silence descended upon the hall.

Gideon's jaw dropped.

"You... you knew his name?"

"I know all their names," Noël lied.

To be exact, he knew sixty-four of them.

He stepped forward into their ranks. The remaining specters surged toward him, their blank faces turning in his direction as frosted blades gleamed.

Noël walked through them with his hands in his trench coat pockets, calling out names one by one.

"Lieutenant Marcus Vance of the 2nd Infantry."

Pshhh!

The second soldier dissolved into white dust.

"Lady Theresa of the Eastern Wing."

Pshhh!

A female specter bowed softly before shattering.

"Commander Conrad of the Royal Guard."

Pshhh!

One by one, the specters stopped. Their blank faces regained their features, and their eyes filled with tears of relief as their erased existences were finally acknowledged.

Tiiiing! Tiiiing!

[You have resolved 45 Echo Soldiers!]

Within minutes, the hall was clear. Millions of glowing white particles floated through the air like a field of stars.

Noël walked calmly toward the heavy iron doors, stepping over the glittering frost.

However, as his hand touched the rusted handle, his left eye throbbed violently.

Kuuung!

Dark ether erupted from behind the doors. The silver Chronometer of the Unseen Clerk inside his vest vibrated wildly, and a crack appeared across its glass face.

[Warning! Unscripted Anomaly detected!]

[The Variable has manifested!]

The iron doors slammed open.

Beyond them lay an altar room covered in black ice. Beside the glowing Sovereign Keystone stood a twelve-foot-tall construct made of twisted black clockwork gears. Its face was a burning red clockface, spinning backward.

A Chronophage Scout.

Noël narrowed his eyes.

The timeline hadn't just diverged.

A hunter from the outer emptiness had arrived far earlier than expected.

It was a monumental monolithic pillar devoid of windows. Its black surface was carved with thousands of pulsing crimson runes that thrummed with immense weight."The ambient pressure here is three times higher than in the lower towers," Gideon said. He leaned on his right foot, his silver rapier drawn, its white-gold solar ether flickering against the gale. "My ether flow is lagging.""Keep your breathing steady," Noël said, wiping sweat and blood from his chin. The Second Spire isn't built from solid stone like the first."Through the swirling haze, the Second Spire loomed before them like a hollow iron cage.Unlike the solid obsidian walls of the First Spire, the Second Spire was composed entirely of thousands of rotating brass gear-platforms, suspended in midair around a pulsing blue energy core."A mechanical puzzle spire," Lyra said, her eyes brightening beneath her helmet visor.
