Cale was plunged into darkness, with all his senses being completely robbed from him. He could neither see, hear, nor feel anything at all.

It was as if he existed in a fixed state of consciousness where the only thing present was the awareness of his own existence, and even that awareness seemed to slowly unravel as doubt about his existence began to grow.

Cale was extremely panicked. Without the ability to sense anything, he didn’t know where he was or what was happening to him. This was much worse than when he first woke up inside the previous cell. Back then, despite the fear and concern he felt, he still had his senses which grounded him in a comforting way.

But now, with all his senses gone all he had left was terror and his memories which he was forced to relive over and over again.

Cale’s memories were not happy ones. Life as an orphan in the fortress was barely a life at all. From the moment he was born, he had been under the mercy of those who could scarcely care whether he lived or died. Add to that his sickly body and you had a recipe for a dismal existence that could possibly compete in a show of ‘world’s most unfortunate being’—if such a show actually existed.

Not to say Cale’s life was terrible—it wasn’t—but it wasn’t exactly glorious either. Just look at his legal name that was given to him by the administrators at the orphanage when he was abandoned there and you’d know just how haphazard his days had been. It definitely wasn’t something Cale found worth remembering.

Yet within the dark senseless void, Cale was forced to relieve these memories over and over again and just when he wished for it to stop, the memories actually stopped replaying like a looping track in his mind. They began to slowly fade from Cale’s mind, permanently.

It was then that Cale realized what true terror was because as his memories began to disappear, he began losing himself too—losing sight of who he was—and questioning his own existence over and over again.

“Where is this? What’s going on here?”

Through his memories, Cale recalled being in a white room before appearing here.

“Wasn’t I somewhere just a moment ago? How did I end up here so suddenly? What was I even doing before I got here?”

Cale tried to sift through his memories to find any information that could help him understand his situation. However, as he did so, he felt a pang of pain coming from somewhere, although he didn’t know where it originated.

“This feeling... I feel pain, but where is it coming from? Why can’t I feel anything else? What was I doing before this?”

“That’s right. I was in a bright room before. But that’s wrong; it’s dark here, so maybe I wasn’t somewhere else. Could I have been here all along?”

“And who am I even?”

“I remember—I’m Cale. That’s my name—Cale, Cale, Cale… Cale who? Who is Cale? Cale should be me, but if I can’t remember anything, then how can I be Cale? Is Cale a person? Someone I know? Does Cale even exist in the first place? Do I exist? Am I real?”

“Stop that—of course, I exist. I can think, therefore I am real. If so, then what am I?”

Cale struggled internally to remember himself. Through his lingering memories, all that remained was an impression of his own existence; yet, under the influence of some force, this lingering impression in his memories clashed with his current state of being, making Cale doubt which was real—his memories or himself.

Something was making Cale forget himself. It was like an illusion was cast over him, like a shroud covering the heavens, causing a severe identity crisis within Cale as he fought to recognize himself against a power that seemed determined to make him forget his own existence.

Selene's eyes were glued to the screen before her as she watched various images with rapt attention.

Currently, the large screen was split into smaller displays, each showing a different image, while the largest split screen displayed Cale’s unconscious body lying helplessly on the floor.

Here is what was happening:

As soon as Selene gave the go-ahead for the experiments to start, a prearranged program began running.

Cale’s room wasn’t just a holding cell to keep him locked away; it was also a large simulation room that doubled as an experimentation chamber. Through it, all of Cale’s vital signs could be monitored, and various experiments and tests could be conducted without him needing to leave the cell or even meet or see his captors.

Inside that cell, Cale was virtually cut off and in complete isolation from the rest of the world, earning his cell the code name "Schrödinger’s Box."

When discussing quantum science, one famous experiment that often comes to mind is Schrödinger’s cat experiment, which explains the nature of particles existing in a quantum state as being both alive and dead at the same time, provided they are not observed by anyone.

It theorizes that by keeping a living subject locked within a box where it cannot be seen, the being potentially exists in two states: alive and dead. Only under observation does the being then adopt a single state of being either alive or dead.

While this experiment is brilliant, it primarily focuses on the observer's perspective, neglecting the subject's perspective locked away within the box.

To the subject, what state do they exist in? Would they consider themselves dead or alive? What factors would affect their perception of themselves? Factors like memory, pain, hunger, and more—how do all these influence the subject's perception of their existence?

One’s core perception of oneself is usually determined by the combination of all these factors and is often hidden deep within the subconscious of the psyche. By removing or adding new elements, this perception can drastically change, leading to various consequences.

That is the goal of the current simulation, dubbed the "Schrödinger’s Creature Experiment." By stripping Cale of all his senses and severely limiting the influence of his memories, Selene hopes to delve deep into Cale’s subconscious to discover the core of his being.

For an awakened individual, this core represents their awakening factor and the most direct but brutal method to uncover an awakened individual's awakening factor is by threatening the core of their existence, which ultimately leads to its revelation.

  • Cale’s Awakening Factor

Cale attempted the sensing method to determine the type of his mental power and to assess the system to which his powers belonged. If it worked, he should see results very soon. After a while, Cale frowned. “Something is wrong! Why is nothing happening?” He furrowed his brow in annoyance, feeling frustrated that nothing seemed to occur despite his repeated attempts. Time after time, every attempt Cale made seemed to meet with consistent snags. “Did I do it wrong?” “No, that’s impossible. The sensing method is a compulsory skill in the learning center’s curriculum, and I received full marks while practicing it. I can’t be wrong now, so what exactly is the problem? Unless…” Cale pondered deeply, his confusion stemming from a simple fact. That is, when practicing the sensing method, there would typically be clear indications of success, which had been explained previously. In one particular case, those signs would be even more pronounced. This applies when performing th

  • Kaleb Blair Nike

No!!! A loud roar suddenly resounded around Cale’s psyche as he forcefully cut off the voices of doubt that were swimming through his head. “My name is Kaleb Blair Nike, an orphan. I’m 19 years old and I am being held against my will by unknown captors. I am a prisoner trapped by evildoers and this is a trick by them to break me—I will not be broken!” Cale screamed with conviction in an attempt to use the sheer force of willpower to regain his sanity. With that outburst, a certain shred of clarity came into Cale’s mind and he quickly regained control of his mind if only for a brief moment. It was then that Cale realized just how close he had been to losing himself. If he hasn’t come to his senses when he did Cale didn’t know what would have happened to him. This thought terrified him but it made him even more furious. “Damn it. Can’t believe this is happening to me. I finally managed to awaken and could finally change my fate but before I could do anything I ended up being c

  • Simulation Trial

Cale was trapped—captured. After calming down, he quickly realized his situation. Although slightly panicked, Cale forced himself to remain calm, convincing himself that his very survival depended on maintaining composure. “Huu, Huu, Huu!” “Breathe, Cale, breathe. You can do this; there’s no need to panic.” Cale focused on controlling his breathing, and with each intake and release of air, he gradually calmed down. Finally, feeling sufficiently composed, he opened his eyes and began to observe his surroundings once again. The room was just as he remembered. Bright lights shone insistently, chasing away any shadows. The padded walls and flooring felt soft under his bare feet, with his toes sinking comfortably into the padding. “There’s nothing distinctive in the room, and there are no windows to see what the outside is like,” Cale noted as he surveyed the area. He checked his clothes and found he was wearing a plain white overall, typical of what a hospital patient might we

  • Captive

When Cale woke up, he found himself in a bed. As soon as he opened his eyes, a bright light temporarily blinded him, causing him to blink and instinctively raise his hand to shield his eyes. However, the moment he blinked, it was as if a switch had been flipped—the light no longer irritated him, and he could see normally. To his surprise, everything appeared to be in stunning clarity, like he was looking at a 4K HD version of the world. The surroundings seemed sharper and more colorful than usual, as if Cale's eyes had been replaced with artificial ones that were more powerful than any camera ever made. Shocked, Cale quickly closed his eyes and opened them again briefly after, only to find that his vision remained the same. Marveling at this change, he became engrossed in this new perspective. “Is this due to my awakening?” Cale wondered aloud. “Did I awaken some sort of ocular power or did my perception become incredibly enhanced?” Speaking of awakening, Cale suddenly rememb

  • Heaven’s Favorite

At that moment, the eyes of the fair-skinned woman began to emit a luminous light. In an instant, a large holographic screen projected from her retinas, displaying a stream of data with parameters that were unknown to the onlookers. Several calculations were performed rapidly until a final reading was presented. Upon seeing the result, the woman's face creased into a frown, slightly warping her delicate features. Beside her, the plump woman waved her hands in the air, which glimmered with an azure light decorated with strange and bizarre symbols dancing within it. While this was happening, a storm was brewing within the hearts of those kneeling before the three powerful women. Behind the women, those kneeling remained doing so with their heads down, their eyes only daring to look at the feet of the three women. But within those eyes hide various emotions chief of which were primarily astonishment and glee. For these people, they were as insignificant to the women as a speck of

Up above in hidden corners and hard-to-reach places surrounding the square, several figures gathered together, overlooking the central square where a crowd of potential awakeners gathered like ants to a feast. These people, their presence unknown to those below, watched the situation unfold with critical eyes, making no effort to join in the commotion since for them, their blessings had long since arrived. Now, they were mere spectators of the festivities, and later, would be judges to guide the direction of the blessed. With mutual understanding, silence reigned among the spectators until a massive column of clouds appeared in the dark sky, preparing to descend. Gasp! Haa! Collective gasps and sighs of astonishment echoed through the group, each person a picture of bewilderment and contemplation. “That's huge!” someone exclaimed. “Has there ever been such a massive mana formation on previous blessing days? This should be the first in recorded history, right? What is hap

  • Cumulonimbus Awakening

One advantage of Cale's slim stature was his natural nimbleness, allowing him to weave through tight spaces more easily without exerting too much strength. Utilizing this advantage, Cale was able to pull ahead of the other youths back in the crowded market, an achievement that filled him with immense satisfaction and joy enough to make him ignore the bouts of pain filling his chest that was gradually building up. The pain in his chest was a constant companion to Cale, a frequent reminder of the inadequacies of his birth. Cale hopes to make up for this inadequacy by awakening in hopes that it would change his fate. Awakened individuals held a highly esteemed status, their diverse abilities unmatched in functionality, leading to a massive desire and demand for them. Regardless of the time or place, there was always a need for them. This led to unparalleled support and favoritism shown to awakened individuals by the government, resulting in everyone wanting to awaken in this era. T

  • Blessing Day

The time was 5 o'clock, and the date was the 24th of the month of Sol, the first month of spring. Above, dark clouds obscured the sun, casting a tumultuous storm of shadows on the ground below. A fierce storm was forming, and figures darted around in preparation for the deluge about to unfold. Cale deftly navigated through the surging crowd of vendors and patrons. The market was packed, and moving felt like trudging through a muddy swamp, one so thick it bogged movement unrelentingly like the desperate grasps of damned souls, yet Cale managed to squeeze through eventually managing to exit at the bustling market gate. Before leaving, Cale took one last glance behind him at the teeming market, where people surged forward like they were escaping the gaping maws of a slumbering beast. Cale wasn't the only one. Behind him, a sea of bodies surged forward like a flood, all young men and women in their primes teeming with uncontrollable vigor and excitement. Like a pack of field mice sigh
