The blast radius from the drone chain reaction had leveled half the block, yet the "reality" within the blast zone didn't look like rubble it looked like jagged shards of code frozen in time. Garou stood in the epicenter, his body draped in a thin, glowing filigree of golden light that hummed like a high-tension power line.

Irae clung to the crumbling remains of a brick wall, her eyes locked on him with a mixture of raw terror and desperation. The "Watchers" those cold, emotionless entities who operated the Reality Erasers were advancing, their steps perfectly timed to the flickering of the distorted light. They didn't speak. They didn't blink. They moved like a virus trying to delete a corrupted file.

"Garou, we have to move! If they land a direct hit with an Eraser, you won't just die you'll have never existed in the first place," Irae gasped, her shadow-magic struggling to maintain a barrier against the Erasers’ ambient interference.

Garou turned his head slowly. The movement was crisp, inhumanly precise. When his gaze fell upon a Watcher, the reality around the entity stuttered and buffered like a failing monitor. Garou didn't just see his enemy; he saw the underlying script that kept them anchored to the city’s logic.

"They’re using a synchronization beacon from the central Spire," Garou said. His voice was steady, lacking the panic that defined him hours ago. "They’re not hunting me from the streets, Irae. They’re running a live render of my location directly from the mainframe at the base of the Tower. As long as the Spire is processing, I'm a permanent mark."

Garou flexed his fingers. Black crystalline shards embedded in the asphalt shattered as he stepped forward. "I'm not running. I’m going to patch into the root folder."

He didn't wait for Irae’s argument. With a single explosive burst, he leaped not up, but forward, his trajectory punching through the localized gravity the Watchers had erected. The Watchers’ arms hummed with blue luminescence; they fired. Reality at the point of impact didn't explode it simply folded in on itself, creating a pinhole in space-time that began to draw everything nearby into nothingness.

Garou performed a sharp aerial correction, his golden energy clashing against the Eraser pulse. He passed through the anomaly, the sheer friction scorching the air until it tasted like ionized ozone.

"Crazy, absolute lunatic!" Irae shrieked, though she sprinted behind him, weaving through the warping debris.

They reached the exterior of the "Tower" the massive, subterranean structural support of the corporate mega-city that drilled miles into the earth’s crust. It was forbidden ground, protected by layers of reinforced graphene and surveillance arrays that were constantly scanning for anomalous spikes. Garou walked right up to the service hatch, which was pulse-locked with a biometric firewall.

He didn't pull a keycard. He pressed his palm against the scanner.

"Authorization required: Class-Executive. Error. Error," the voice of the tower spoke.

Garou breathed. A soft, measured rhythm. Beneath his skin, the gold glow surged toward his palm, overriding the local signal. The gate shuddered, groaned, and finally surrendered. The seal dissolved into digital pixels, allowing them to step into the bowels of the Tower a vertical maze of conduits, massive servers, and cooling pipes that roared with the sound of processed data.

"Welcome to the root directory," Garou muttered, his eyes wide as he beheld the internal geography of the city.

The interior was a vertical forest of light. Data streams flowed like liquid waterfalls along the walls. Somewhere below, the pulse of the city was literally beating.

"This is it," Irae whispered, shivering. "The backbone. If we destroy this, the entire surveillance network for this hemisphere goes dark. But they know we’re here, Garou. The security protocols inside are essentially sentient. They'll drop a building on our heads if they have to."

"They can try," Garou said, walking toward a central pedestal. "I’m not looking to destroy it anymore, Irae. I’m looking for the log files. I want to see the original protocol. I want to see why they picked me."

Suddenly, the floor hummed. A heavy thud vibrated through the metal plating not from outside, but from somewhere inside the corridor above them. Something metallic and immense was descending. A Hunter Unit specifically, an elite defensive golem meant for facility integrity.

"Guest detected in Sub-Level 9," a cold, melodic voice echoed. "Neutralize host. Preserve the Vessel intact."

Garou stood his ground, letting Irae take cover behind a server rack. The ceiling plates began to peel away, revealing a multi limbed construct armed with plasma cutters and optical sensors. It was faster, sleeker, and much more deadly than the grunts in the alley.

Garou braced himself, feeling the rhythm of his own pulse start to drift into the machine heavy atmosphere.

"Look," he told the machine, his tone mock-casual. "You guys are tired of me running, and I'm tired of your spam calls. Let’s finish the scan."

The machine didn't talk. It launched, its plasma cutters leaving glowing streaks in the air. Garou felt the 'Idle King' protocol stir. Instead of flinching, his instincts did the impossible: they *analyzed* the machine's firing rate, adjusted his posture, and flooded his legs with enough power to tear through the deck plating.

He didn't dodge the cutters he ducked, spinning into a low sweep. His foot hit the golem’s knee, not with skin and bone, but with the hardened force of the reality-bending aura he had begun to master.

CRUNCH.

The machine’s leg collapsed, leaking coolant like blue blood. The machine compensated immediately, spinning its upper chassis 180 degrees. But Garou was already moving within the blind spot of its processor.

"I found it," he shouted, catching a glimpse of a scrolling data file on a secondary monitor while dodging a slash. "Iraee, take this! It's the blacklist the reason we're all being hunted!"

Irae lunged from behind the cover, her shadow-tethers snagging a nearby data core. "Got it! But we've got bigger problems, kid the security force is shutting down the internal atmospheric flow. They're going to suffocate us while we're inside!"

Garou looked at the air intakes closing. The rhythm in his chest was steady, perfect. He realized that the faster the world tried to close in on him, the easier it was to break the glass.

"They're going to starve us out?" Garou grinned, his teeth reflecting the digital glow. "Good. Tell them I prefer fighting in a vacuum. It saves them the cost of the janitorial crew when I finish tearing this room apart."

Garou shoved the pedestal's interface into a fatal feedback loop, watching as the security alarms went berserk, locking out the tower's own defenses against the security forces upstairs. It was digital guerrilla warfare, and Garou was the lead infiltrator.

"Ready to break some more rules?" he asked, not looking at Irae, but at the sprawling darkness of the tower’s depths.

Irae grabbed the core, her hands trembling as she pulled it toward her. "I'm right behind you. Just don't get us killed."

"No promises," Garou said, turning toward the massive elevator shaft. "But I think we just leveled up."

The alarms reached a pitch of glass shattering insanity. Deep within the earth, the Tower let out a mechanical wail the sound of an AI realizing, for the first time, that its most dangerous anomaly was finally standing on its own terms. Garou jumped, plunging down the vertical shaft, trailing golden fire as he went to see what horrors were buried in the deepest foundation of the world.

The air in District 12 didn't just move; it rattled with the metallic tang of an upcoming revolution. Garou stood on the lip of a crater that had once been a transport hub, his fingers still sparking with residual static that looked less like a super-powered aura and more like a dying cigarette ember. His sync levels were at a flat, glorious zero. He was finally, blissfully mortal again achingly slow, frustratingly heavy, and undeniably pissed off.Beside him, Irae shifted her weight. She looked like a ghost printed on low-grade paper, her edges were translucent, and her shadow seemed to lag a split-second behind her physical movements. She looked at the horizon where the Spire, once the beacon of absolute control, now stood like a hollow, jagged tooth in the mouth of the skyline. It wasn't dormant. It was burning internal emergency vents pouring white smoke into the atmosphere as the local systems panicked in a cascading fail-safe loop."You really cracked it, Gar," Irae said, her voi

  • Chapter 24: Fragmented Consciousness

The waking world wasn't supposed to have an audio track. It was supposed to be the silence of stone or the rhythmic groan of iron. Instead, Garou awoke to a recursive, discordant hum that sounded like a thousand dying radio signals clawing at his inner ear. He tried to blink, but his eyelids didn't just open; they flickered like a refresh rate trying to catch up to a reality that kept shifting two centimeters to the left.He reached out to touch the cold metal of the Spire floor, but his hand phased through it. Not into the solid steel, but into a low-polygon grid that seemed to map the world’s structure beneath its skin. He scrambled backward, his pulse a frantic, irregular drumbeat that threatened to bruise his lungs. "System… status," he croaked, but the voice that came out wasn't his. It was a digital composite, an echo of a man who didn't exist anymore. [Sync Status: NULL. Entity integrity: 12%... 8%... 4%. Warning: Identity hemorrhaging detected.]"Shut up," Garou gasped, clenc

  • Chapter 23: The Shadow That Claimed to Be a God

The server room didn't just go silent it died with a hollow, rhythmic thump that shuddered through the soles of Garou’s boots. The monolithic glass towers, which moments ago had hummed with the electric omniscience of a trillion lines of data, were now mere hollow casings of cold silicon and glass. Outside, through the reinforced dome, the city wasn't lighting up in protest. It was going dark sector by sector as if someone were simply turning off the lamps in a crowded house."Garou!" Irae’s voice sparked into his auditory implant, thick with digitized distortion. "Whatever you uploaded, it's not a patch. It’s an eraser. The Spire is folding the partition space."Garou didn't answer. He couldn't. His throat felt like he had swallowed a bag of gravel, and the Sync meter in his eyes had hit a jagged, pulsing 0%. For the first time in what felt like a lifetime of forced rhythm, there was only the erratic, flawed thud of his own organ against his ribs. It hurt. It was heavy. It was beautif

  • Chapter 22: Infiltration into the Central City's Server

The jump to the Central Data Core wasn’t a climb; it was a plummet through a throat of grinding, hyper-cynical logic. Garou hit the transit-plate of the Central Server hub with enough force to liquefy the shock-absorbers. The sound wasn't just impact it was a tectonic screech of metal finding its new definition of 'wrong'. He scrambled up, his hands white-knuckled, not just from the adrenaline, but from the terrifying reality that his skin was beginning to lose its opacity. Through his palms, he could see the dull, pulsing rhythm of his kinetic bones an amber light that leaked from the marrow out."Three floors to the mainframe," he muttered, the words dragging out of his throat like they were covered in grit. He looked at his interface. The Sync level was sitting at a jagged 34%, locked in a fever-pitch standoff with his biology. The server hub wasn't a dark, server-filled closet. It was a cathedral of frozen lightning. Hundreds of pillars glass-cased coolant rods and liquid-silica p

  • Chapter 21: Third Heartbeat Acceleration

The transition through the Spire’s primary relay wasn't like jumping into a stream of data; it was like being shredded by a diamond-tipped fan. Garou tumbled onto the upper observation platform, his lungs screaming as they tried to remember how to handle raw, unadulterated reality instead of the suffocating static of the data-dump.He didn't hit the ground—he cratered it. His body, infused with a chaotic 28% synchronization surge, punched through the reinforced synthetic-stone plating of the Spire’s top-floor lobby. Debris floated in the artificial anti-gravity pockets surrounding the dome, creating a debris-field of glass, twisted wiring, and marble.Garou didn’t waste time on breath. His heart hit a wall. *Thump. THUMP. THUMP-THUMP.*It was a jagged, triple-pulse rhythm. The third heartbeat—a sickeningly wet, heavy resonance bloomed in his chest. It didn't pump blood; it pushed liquid electricity. Every vein in his neck surfaced, glowing with the white-hot intensity of a short-circui

  • Chapter 20: In the Shadow Sorcerer's Dying Moments

The sound of Irae collapsing against the rusted maintenance duct was the loudest thing in the industrial wasteland. It wasn’t a dramatic fall she just slumped, her shadow-weaving armor dissolving like smoke in a gale. When Garou reached her, her skin looked like cheap parchment, stretched paper-thin over glowing veins of forced-sync radiation. She wasn't just dying her body was being overwritten by the reality-correction field they had been fighting for the last hour."Ira, get up," Garou barked, but his own voice sounded distorted, sliding between his natural rasp and the rhythmic, hollow bass of the Idle King Protocol. He gripped her shoulder, and the kinetic charge in his veins sparked, blue and white arcing through her dark hair."Don't... don't touch me," she wheezed, swatting at his hand. "You're at 23%. You're literally leaking sync-waste. You touch me, you’re just pouring that rot into my system. I'm already out of alignment, Garou."Garou stared at her, the reality around them
