Everyone in the room closed their eyes as if that would protect them from what was about to unfold; everyone except Calvin. Nathan Harrington had destroyed men's lives for much smaller insults than this.

He hadn't just ended careers; he'd ruined families and made people disappear, all for showing him disrespect.

But before Nathan could pronounce his judgment, Ronald got to his feet. The blood on his mouth was still there, but his fear was now replaced by anger.

"Who do you think you are?" he yelled at Calvin, even though his voice cracked with pain.

"Show some respect! Apologize to my father immediately!"

But Nathan looked at his son with disgust.

"Sit down, boy," he commanded.

"This isn't your fight anymore."

Not wanting to take another hit, Ronald fell back into his chair. The shame of being dismissed like that seemed to hurt worse than his physical injuries, but Nathan didn't care.

Now he was looking at Calvin.

"I've met stubborn young men like you before; the kind of men who mistake patience for weakness. But some people are naturally born stupid, so I don't blame you."

Then he looked at the beautiful young woman sitting beside Calvin. Abigail hadn't spoken a word since the meeting started, and now she felt like disappearing.

What Nathan didn't know was that three months ago, his daughter Abigail had come to Calvin with financial documents copied from her father's office. Most of them were bank records showing money moved to offshore accounts linked to various crime groups.

The other documents were contracts with radio stations that looked more like bribes and payoffs to music critics and award show judges.

Abigail had been building a case against her father for years. All she needed was the right time to act.

"I blame you, Abigail," Nathan said to his daughter.

"You chose to bring weakness into our family by marrying a man who knows no respect or discipline."

As Nathan spoke, Abigail flinched. Though he didn't raise his voice, it was clear that each hurtful word was having the intended effect on her sensitive mind.

"But I shouldn't be surprised. You've always been the biggest disappointment of this family, and your poor choice of a husband is proof of that."

The playful mood around Calvin had disappeared. As Nathan was still speaking, he stood up.

His gray eyes faced Nathan as he slowly pulled out the candy from his mouth.

"Now listen carefully, old man," Calvin said calmly.

"I sat like a good little boy while you beat your son like a dog and mistreated your wife. But I won't sit here and watch you insult mine."

He slowly put the candy back into his mouth without looking away.

"All you've done so far is whine and throw tantrums because you can't handle the fact that your company is dying. You've given no solutions or plans to get out of this mess, and yet I'm the one who knows no respect and discipline?"

Calvin briefly looked at everyone in the room before continuing.

"Well, since nobody else in the room is brave enough to call you out, let me make something clear. You can abuse the rest of your family when I'm not around; they're yours. But you will not touch my wife. Abigail is under my protection now, not your control. I am her husband, and she is off limits to you."

The thirty seconds that passed felt like thirty years as Nathan slowly slid his hands into his pockets while the son-in-law sat down.

"Calvin Constantine," he said.

"You seem to have forgotten something important. This is my family, my building, and my empire. You, Calvin, exist in this world because I allow it."

Then he slowly walked around the table, each calculated step building even more fear in the room. When he reached Calvin's chair, he leaned down until his mouth was inches away from the young man's ear.

"I built this company from nothing," Nathan whispered in a tone loud enough for everyone with listening ears to hear.

"Brick by brick, deal by deal, body by body. I've made men rich and poor, famous and forgotten, alive and dead."

Rebecca came downstairs with another suitcase. Her face looked pale, and her faded makeup gave it away that she had been crying."Change of plans. You know Tessa Scott, right?""Yes. We were very close, you know, before her husband's cheating scandal and all.""Excellent. You will arrange a meeting between her and Frank."Rebecca frowned."Sir, Tessa has been in hiding for months. She wouldn't want to be anywhere close to anyone from the industry after what happened.""She will if you ask nicely. Tell her that my son can restore her music career. He has connections that can clear any name and make her famous again."Frank got up from the couch, not liking where this was going."I don't need a blind date. I'm not a child."Nathan looked back at his son."No, no, no. This isn't about romance; you are going to recruit her for the label. Tessa Scott has millions of fans who believe she was treated unfairly. If we sign her to the new label, it shows that we protect our artists better than

Frank got up from his seat, knowing what his father was doing."Leave her alone, Dad.""You sit down and shut up, Frank."Nathan said without taking his eyes off the lady."Now here is what you're going to do, young lady. Tonight, you are going to disappear from my son's life, and it will be for good. If I see you anywhere close to him again, I will tell your husband everything."Rebecca frowned."You're bluffing.""Don't test me, young lady. We both know what happened to those who double-crossed him, even the closest members of his family weren't free; not even his own mother. So don't think you are going to be the exception just because you are his wife."Rebecca took a deep breath, nodding as she replied."I understand."Nathan nodded back as he slowly leaned away."Very good. Now pack faster, we don't have all night."The young lady ran upstairs as Nathan turned back to face his son. Frank glared back at him with nothing but hatred in his eyes, but Nathan walked over to the other

Frank took a deep breath, staring at the business card like it was poison he couldn't resist."What's the catch?"Nathan leaned back into the couch, joining him to stare at the wide 4K TV on the wall."No catch, just don't dump another scandal on my doorstep. No more affairs with the wives of powerful men, no more public meltdowns, and no more wild parties on social media."Nathan said, but this time, his voice quickly turned quiet and deadly."If you embarrass me or my company again, I will release everything. I will tell the world about every crime you committed, every enemy you made, and every dark secret that still keeps you alive in this city."Now Frank wasn't buying it anymore."You keep giving threats, but we both know that you can't destroy your own son.""Try me."Nathan said, getting up and standing in front of him."The Neo-Mafia wants your head for ruining their biggest arms deal. On the other hand, Senator Morrison still secretly has that fifty thousand dollar bounty on

  • Chapter 9: The Declaration of War.

When Calvin hung up, he was sitting in his friend Martin's living room, staring at his laptop screen. A countdown timer showed two minutes until he went live on MeTube, and even though he had only announced it an hour ago, over 5,000 people were already waiting in the chat room with the numbers still climbing.Hearing Calvin throughout the call, Martin put down his phone and shook his head."With the way you keep secrets from your wife, I'm surprised she hasn't divorced you yet."Calvin seemed to be more focused on the live feed, refusing to look away from the screen before adjusting the camera angles and lighting. The live video had to be perfect, but he heard what Martin said."That's exactly why I'm doing this; that's why I'm willing to destroy Nathan Harrington. Abigail trusts me to protect her and everything we've built together, and I won't disappoint her."Martin nodded slowly."Yeah, love sure makes us do crazy things. But this is way out of your league, Calvin. What you are a

"You are just like all the other vultures," he said with obvious bitterness."You see someone like me and think you've found easy money. I spent 18 months in jail because of people like you. I suffered there because I trusted the wrong suit with the wrong contract. I was lured in by someone like you and lost everything because of it, yet somehow that isn't enough for all of you?"Even though Abigail's heart was pounding, she stayed perfectly still."Freya Music Group wants to give you complete creative control. We will only step in when you ask us to. We don't interfere with your work or make demands on how to make your music."Jason laughed again, this time hollow and broken."Of course, and after I sign your stupid contract, your crafty lawyers will find some tiny clause in the documents that signs away my soul. You are beautiful, I'll give you that, but you're a terrible liar."Abigail stood and placed her business card on the table next to the nearest overflowing ashtray. Jason's

How her husband knew he lived here was beyond her, and she tried her best to calm down. The neighborhood looked tired and forgotten, with rows of small houses featuring dead lawns and broken streetlights. It was hard to believe that a young music icon who sold out stadiums just a few years ago was now living here. This was crazy, but she trusted Calvin. She looked at the rearview mirror to make sure her hair was perfect.Taking a deep breath, she walked to the front door. The porch light was broken and she had to stand alone in the dark for a while, tracing her hands on the outside wall to find the doorbell. She pressed it once and there was no response, then she pressed it over and over until she saw a curtain move upstairs. Someone had noticed her, and she stood still, trying her best to look harmless.Given the circumstances, she wouldn't be surprised if he was too scared to answer. This was like
