"Stand up and face me," Nathan commanded, but Ronald's legs were cold and wet.

He couldn't move.

"I don't repeat myself, Ronald."

After taking a deep breath, the young man got to his feet and faced his father. While his body was shaking, Nathan opened his arms as if he was about to hug his son.

Then he straightened out the wrinkles on his suit and adjusted his necktie.

"You know what?" Nathan said in a voice that sounded too kind to be true.

"You're right. Young singers these days are too lazy. They don't want to work hard. They're so spoiled that not even Hollywood's best teams can fix them."

Ronald felt relieved. It seemed his father had finally understood how hard his job was.

The slap came without warning. Nathan's hand hit Ronald's face with a quick crack like a baseball bat.

Before he could think, a heavy blow came to his stomach. The impact sent the young man crashing to his knees in pain.

"But here's what you're missing," Nathan said calmly as if he hadn't just beaten his own son.

"Your job isn't to work with lazy singers, but hungry ones with ambition. You know, the kind of people you find on the streets who wouldn't mind signing off ninety-five percent of all their future earnings just to get a deal. If you don't know that, then you have no business working in the role given to you."

Ronald's ears rang so loud that he could barely hear what his father was saying. Blood dripped from his lip down to his white shirt. Red stains appeared that were too hard to ignore.

Not even his meddlesome mother could help him now.

This was Nathan's kingdom. He made the rules.

Everyone in the room knew that. Everyone except Calvin.

He had seen enough. Calvin knew about Ronald's secret deals because he'd been tracking them for months.

From phone records to bank transfers and recorded conversations, he had everything it took to destroy the young man completely. But watching Nathan beat up his own son made Calvin's stomach turn.

No betrayal deserved this kind of violence. It was at that moment when he made a loud crinkling sound that broke the silence.

Nathan looked at his son-in-law with a new frown on his face. Across the shiny table, sitting next to his daughter Abigail, was the man who wasn't affected by all the violence and intimidation.

Calvin Constantine was unwrapping another lollipop with the same attention he'd given the first one at the start of the meeting.

Then he put the strawberry candy in his mouth and dropped the wrapper on the table while everyone was looking. Right after that, Calvin leaned back and crossed his legs. He looked more like a man relaxing on a couch in his living room than at a board meeting.

Now Nathan's anger was clearer than ever.

"What do you think you're doing?" he asked.

"Eating candy," Calvin replied without pulling out the lollipop.

His words were clear with no sign of fear or intimidation.

"It's what people do whenever they're bored."

Everyone in the room could see Nathan's chest rise and fall as he took a deep breath.

"Do you know where you are right now?"

Calvin pulled the candy from his mouth and looked around the room like he'd just arrived for the first time. He pointed at different things in the room as he spoke.

"Let's see. I see a fancy round table with bloodstains you never cleaned off, expensive paintings that look like they came from a hotel lobby, and family members who should be feeling safe around you but are currently too scared to breathe."

He carefully examined the lollipop like it was much more interesting than the person he was talking to.

"I'd say I'm at the most depressing family meeting."

Before Nathan could react, Calvin reached into his jacket so quickly that it seemed he was about to pull a weapon. What came out, however, was another lollipop. This one was grape-flavored.

Then he held it out to Nathan with a friendly smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"Do you want one? It might help you relax. You seem a little tense."

Most people in the room thought he was just being brave for show. They believed he was possibly trying too hard to impress his wife. But hidden in his coat pocket was a small recording device that had been capturing everything for the last hour.

From every threat to every act of violence and admission of criminal behavior, the device was connected to his phone. The phone streamed the audio to a secure server in real time.

If something happened to Calvin today, the recording would be copied by his close friend Martin and sent to the FBI. It would also go to the music industry press and Nathan's biggest rivals in the music industry.

"Three more investors left your company today. Your stock dropped eight percent. Your artists are asking questions." "It's only temporary," Nathan said through his teeth. "We've discussed this already, haven't we?" Jonah took a long drag from the cigarette and blew smoke up. "While that might sound like an impressive excuse to you, the council doesn't think so. They think you're losing control, Nathan Harrington. They think... it's time for new leadership." "I built all this from nothing," Nathan said, gesturing at the building they were in and the Neo sign on their shirts. "I've made Neo more money than anyone in ten years. And you come here to talk to me about new leadership? Have you gone mad?" "Ten years, Nathan. Don't make a big deal out of it," Jonah said like he was intentionally trying to be offensive. "But what have you done this week?" One of the men stepped forward, cr

Nathan loosened his tie with one hand, phone pressed against his ear with the other as he walked down the hallway. "Mr. Peterson, I understand your concerns, but I promise you this is only temporary. Calvin Constantine's little stunt was nothing more than a social media charade. Rest assured, my team is handling it." He stopped at his bedroom door, listening to the investor's worried voice. "No sir, there is no need to worry. Your investment is safe. In fact, I think we'll see better returns once all this dies down. We both know the music industry loves a comeback story. That's the only reason Calvin Constantine is everywhere on the news right now." Nathan pushed open his bedroom door. Stephanie was already asleep. "Don't worry, sir. I assure you that by next quarter, all investors in my company see why Harrington Music Group has been the most profitable label for ten years. Trust me, Mr. Peterson. Have I eve

"Where do you live?" he asked. "I live in Brentwood," she said. "But Jason..." "Yes?" he said. "I meant what I said back then. When we talked on set, I thought you were just another angry celebrity having a bone to pick with the world. But the way you handled tonight was beyond me." Jason shook his head. "Stop making a big deal out of it. Anyone with a level head would have done the same thing, if not better." Nina gently bit her lower lip, still staring at Jason's face. Jason glanced at her for a while before keeping his eyes back on the road. Without her quick wits, intellect and charm, Nina Gilbert was just a young woman who just experienced a difficult night. "If you are still thinking about that envelope, then stop. It doesn't matter." "Well, thank goodness one of the paramedics brought it along. It is an apology letter from Calvin, along with some lega

Before they started their rapid-fire questions, Jason ordered the staff present to clear a path. As they did, two paramedics rushed in with their medical equipment. Jason slowly moved aside as they took over. One of the paramedics looked at him, and before she could ask anything, Jason gave the full report. "An allergic reaction to sulfates in wine. Difficulty breathing, flushing and throat constriction." The lead paramedic nodded as she briefly turned to Nina. "Are you her boyfriend?" asked the lead paramedic while preparing an injection. Jason hesitated for a moment. "He's with me," Nina said between difficult breaths. The paramedic nodded as she injected the drug. Within two minutes, Nina was breathing properly again. The panicked look in her eyes was gone, and she could see Jason staying close. "Are you feeling better?" Nina nodded. "Pretty much, yeah," she said with her voice still raspy. "While that's a good sign, we still need to take her to the hospital for f

While Jason was stuck in his thoughts, Nina raised her glass with a playful smile that made the knot in his stomach feel even more painful. "Here's to enjoying a year of being stuck with me." Jason didn't raise his glass, wondering why she was raising hers after already drinking from it. "Can't contain the excitement," he said before cutting into his food. "Has any of your girlfriends ever told you how cute you are when you sulk?" Then she took another sip of the drink. "I'm sure you were the spoiled type who whined and cried whenever things didn't go your way." Jason shook his head, stabbing his food like he was imagining the meal as Nina. "Have you met my mother before?" The woman took a final sip from the cup before answering. "God, this is so good," she whispered to herself in a way that was loud enough for Jason to hear. "Probably not," she answered Jason. "But I know you kissed my hand even when you couldn't stand being around me. I love the way you opened

Seeing Calvin didn't help, and before Calvin could offer a handshake, Jason walked past him toward the elevator, leaving his hand hanging. "Interesting," Calvin said as he pulled out a lollipop and slowly unwrapped it. He opened the door and stepped into the busy studio.Abigail was talking with a young woman in a medieval dress while the rest of the crew worked like a busy movie set.
