The barrel of the heavy military gun pointed right at my face.

I froze on the edge of the crater, the real daylight feeling too bright and too harsh after spending my whole life under the fake neon lights of New Seoul. The wind blew cold dust across the ruined ground, stinging my eyes. Behind me, the steel door of the tunnel slammed shut with a loud bang, locking off any way back.

We were trapped.

"Drop your weapons and put your hands where I can see them," the soldier in the lead tank ordered. His voice was hard, coming through a speaker mounted on the side of the armored vehicle. He wore the exact same dark uniform as Commander Thorne, complete with a silver badge shaped like an open computer book.

Lyra did not drop anything. In fact, her hand slid slowly inside her jacket, her fingers wrapping around the hilt of a hidden knife. Her single violet eye narrowed as she scanned the tank lines, counting the soldiers and checking the weak spots in their formation.

"Don't do it, Lyra," I said quietly, keeping my hands up where the soldier could see them while the gold fire in my chest warmed up again. "There are too many of them."

"There are never too many of them," Lyra replied, her voice low and steady. "There is only a line of code, and every line can be broken."

Before I could stop her, Lyra pulled a small metal cylinder from her pocket and threw it hard toward the left tank. The cylinder burst open in mid-air, releasing a thick cloud of bright silver smoke that blinded the soldiers and covered the front of the vehicles.

"Run!" she shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me sideways down the steep slope of the crater.

A rain of laser fire lit up the smoke behind us. The ground where we had been standing a second ago blew apart in a shower of dirt and hot sparks. We scrambled down the loose rocks, sliding and tripping over pieces of broken metal that littered the wasteland.

"You always do that!" I said, ducking as a red energy beam flew right over my head and charred a boulder into black dust.

"Do what?" Lyra asked, her feet moving fast as she jumped over a deep trench.

"You start fights without a plan!"

"My plan is staying alive," she snapped back. "If you want to sit there and wait for them to rewrite your brain into a happy little barista, go back up the hill. Otherwise, keep running."

We cut hard to the right, ducking behind the rusted skeleton of an old flying bus that had crashed into the side of the crater years ago. We pressed our backs against the cold metal plates, listening to the heavy boots of the soldiers crunching on the gravel outside our cover.

"They are surrounding the bus," I said, peeking through a bullet hole in the metal wall.

Outside, at least a dozen soldiers in dark uniforms were fan-spreading out, their weapons raised and ready. Leading them was not a normal captain, but a woman with short dark hair and a mechanical left arm that clicked and whirred every time she moved her fingers.

Director Vance.

My breath caught in my throat. My chest tightened so hard it felt like a fist was squeezing my lungs. Even though I had never met this woman in this loop, my brain instantly knew who she was.

"My mother," I whispered, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.

Lyra stopped checking her gun and looked over at me, her violet eye wide with surprise. "What did you say?"

"That's Director Vance," I said, my hands shaking as I looked through the metal hole again. "She runs the upper tier research division. She's the one who approved my memory wipes."

Lyra’s expression hardened into pure ice. She looked from me to the woman outside the bus, her lips pressing into a thin, angry line. "So she's the one who wrote the deletion script for your file. How poetic. The mother who deletes her own son to keep the system running."

"Why would she do that?" I asked, a sharp pain stabbing behind my eyes as old, broken memories tried to force their way to the surface. "I am her son. Why would she trap me in a coffee shop loop?"

"Because you aren't her son, Kiran," a cold voice echoed from outside the bus.

We both spun around. Director Vance was standing right in the open doorway at the back of the rusted bus, blocking our only exit. Her mechanical left arm was raised, pointing a heavy plasma pistol straight at my chest. Her face looked like stone, completely empty of any warmth or love.

"You are just a prototype," Director Vance said, stepping inside the dark cabin of the bus. "The first version of the core operating system had too much empathy. You kept trying to rebel, trying to escape into the real world. So we locked your mind inside a loop, gave you a fake life pouring coffee, and used your power to keep New Seoul running."

I stood up slowly from behind the metal cover, the gold fire flaring up in my hands until the air around my fingers shimmered with heat. "You lied to me my whole life."

"I wrote you," Director Vance corrected coldly, her finger tightening slightly on the trigger of her pistol. "And if you don't surrender right now, I will wipe every single line of code in your brain and turn you into an empty shell."

I looked at her, feeling the cold anger take over every part of my body. All the confusion, all the fear, and all the pain turned into a hard, bright certainty. I wasn't a machine. I wasn't just a file to be deleted.

"You can try," I said.

Before my mother could pull the trigger, Lyra moved with blinding speed. She didn't aim at Director Vance. Instead, she threw her hidden knife straight into the rusted ceiling beam above the Director's head.

The heavy metal beam snapped loose with a loud groan and came crashing down right between us, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and blocking Director Vance's view.

"Grab my hand!" Lyra yelled, lunging through the dust and grabbing my wrist with her cold fingers.

She kicked out the side window of the rusted bus, shattering the old glass into pieces, and pulled me out into the open air of the wasteland just as a blast of plasma fire melted the floor where we had been standing.

We hit the dirt rolling, sliding down the other side of the crater ridge where the tanks couldn't see us.

"Where are we going now?" I asked, gasping for air as we ran across the flat, gray plains of the outside world.

"To the real server room," Lyra said, her face grim as she checked her remaining ammunition. "The place where your mother and the Author keep the master switch. We are going to shut down New Seoul once and for all."

We ran for a long time, the wind howling around us, leaving the crater and the army far behind. Ahead of us, sticking out of the dead earth like a giant metal tooth, stood a massive tower covered in blinking red warning lights and heavy steel cables.

We slowed down as we reached the heavy iron gates surrounding the tower. There were no guards outside, but the air around the fence crackled with visible waves of blue electricity that hummed with deadly power.

I reached out my hand, testing the barrier with my gold fire, when Lyra suddenly stopped dead in her tracks. She let go of my wrist, her single violet eye staring at the ground just inside the gate.

I followed her gaze.

Lying half-buried in the dirt right in front of the tower's entrance was a torn leather jacket covered in dry blood, and beside it lay a silver-white hair tie that matched the one Lyra wore in her own hair.

Lyra fell to her knees, her usual cold, sharp armor cracking completely. She picked up the hair tie with trembling fingers, her breath catching in her throat.

"No," Lyra whispered, her voice breaking for the very first time. "He's already here."

Before I could ask what she meant, the heavy iron gates in front of us slowly swung open by themselves, and a familiar voice echoed from the dark speakers mounted on the tower walls.

"Welcome, Lyra," the voice said, laughing softly. "We've been waiting for you to bring him home."

The wound from the Syndicate cannon back in the underground engine room was completely gone, leaving not even a scar on her coat."You did not really think a simple plasma blast could delete a core director, did you, Kiran?" Director Vance asked, stepping forward as her boots clicked sharply against the concrete. "We programmed every death you experienced in New Seoul. Every ally you lost and every enemy you fought was just part of the test to see if your architecture was stable enough for mass release."
