The blank-faced figure raised the glowing keyboard, and my whole world shook.
A heavy wave of static hit my chest, pushing me back against the cold metal wall. I tried to lift my left hand, but my fingers were turning clear and see-through just like my arm. The system format was eating me alive, second by second, wiping away my body to make room for a new draft.
"Stop him!" Lyra shouted, her voice cutting through the loud noise of the alarms.
She did not wait for me to move. With a quick, cold twist of her wrist, Lyra shoved Commander Thorne forward, pushing him right into the path of the blank-faced figure.
Thorne let out a loud gasp as he crashed against the dark entity. The white diamond in Thorne's chest flared with a blinding burst of blue light, fighting against the shifting silver surface of the Author's proxy.
"What are you doing, you crazy girl?" Thorne cursed, grabbing at the blank-faced figure's shoulders to keep from falling off the narrow ledge into the deep red pit below.
"Saving my own skin," Lyra said without a single drop of pity on her face. She pulled me down behind a thick metal pipe, keeping us out of reach while the two men fought on the edge. "We need a distraction so I can use the key."
I stared at her, my heart racing. "You used him as a shield."
"He is a tool programmed to kill us, Kiran," Lyra replied, her single violet eye fixed on the silver key in her hand as she jammed it into a hidden slot in the wall panel. "Do not waste your tears on code."
I looked back at Thorne. The blank-faced figure raised a hand made of shifting letters and pressed it directly onto Thorne's chest, right over the glowing white diamond. Thorne's body stiffened. His mouth opened in a silent cry as lines of red data poured out of his eyes and ears, sucked away into the keyboard.
"The format... cannot be stopped..." Thorne choked out, his face turning pale and stiff before his entire body dissolved into a cloud of gray dust that blew away in the wind.
The blank-faced figure turned its smooth, featureless head toward us. The glowing keyboard in its hands began to type by itself, a fast, clicking sound that echoed like heavy rain on a tin roof.
Delete subject Kiran Vance. Save changes to main file.
A bright red line shot out from the keyboard, heading straight for my chest.
"Hurry up, Lyra!" I shouted, watching the red line move closer. My legs were completely gone now; only my torso and my left hand remained visible, floating above the metal ledge like a ghost.
"Almost... got it," Lyra muttered, her teeth clenched as she twisted the silver key hard to the left.
The key made a loud, sharp click.
A bright blue light erupted from the wall panel, shooting across the abyss and hitting the massive computer screen at the bottom of the pit. The picture of my coffee shop flashed once, then twice, and then inverted completely. The red warning lights turned into a calm, steady green.
The blank-faced figure froze. The keyboard in its hands went dark, and the silver light on its face faded away into smooth, dull metal. It stood there for a second, then fell backward off the ledge, plunging silently into the dark red pit below.
The alarms stopped ringing. The heavy pressure on my chest vanished.
I looked down at my body. The fading reversed in a flash of gold light, my arms and legs solidifying back into normal flesh and bone. I drew a deep, ragged breath, feeling the air fill my lungs for the first time since the night began.
"It worked," I breathed out, leaning back against the cold wall. "We stopped the format."
"We didn't stop anything," Lyra said, her voice tight and serious. She pulled the silver key out of the panel and tucked it safely inside her jacket. "We just paused the simulation. The Author has thousands of backup files. If we stay in New Seoul, he will rewrite us by morning."
"Then where do we go?" I asked, pushing myself up to my feet. My legs felt shaky, but the gold fire inside my chest kept me steady. "You said there is no outside world. You said everything is code."
Lyra turned and pointed down past the edge of the ledge. At the very bottom of the deep pit, where the red screen used to be, a small, dark tunnel had opened up in the foundation of the city. A faint, natural light, not neon, not computer glow, but actual daylight, was spilling out from the mouth of the tunnel.
"That is the real world, Kiran," Lyra said softly, her hard expression breaking for just a moment to reveal a deep, quiet sadness. "Or at least, what is left of it after the machines took over. My brother went down there five years ago to find the original server room. He never came back."
I looked from the tunnel to Lyra's face. All the anger I had felt toward her, the way she manipulated people, the way she used Thorne as a shield, suddenly made sense. She was not just fighting for survival. She was looking for her family.
"Your brother," I said quietly. "Is that why you carry that bundle?"
Lyra froze. Her hand dropped away from her jacket, her fingers clenching into tight fists. She did not answer me. She turned around and walked toward the edge of the ledge, looking down into the dark tunnel.
"We are wasting time," she said, her voice cold again. "If you want to go back to making coffee for people who do not even exist, go ahead. But if you want to know who you really are before the next reset, follow me."
Without waiting to see if I would follow, Lyra jumped off the ledge, landing squarely on the metal path leading down to the tunnel.
I stood alone on the platform for a second, looking back up at the broken white room where my fake life had started. Then I looked down at my glowing gold hands, feeling the power thrumming under my skin.
I took a deep breath, stepped off the edge, and jumped after her.
We ran side by side down the dark metal path, heading straight toward the mouth of the tunnel. The natural light grew brighter with every step, warming my face for the first time in my life.
We reached the entrance of the tunnel and pushed through a heavy steel door that led out into the open air.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
There was no rainy street. There was no neon sign. There were no robotic enforcers or underground coffee shops.
We stood on the edge of a massive, ruined crater that stretched out as far as the eye could see under a pale, real sky filled with gray clouds. And standing right in front of us, blocking our path out of the crater, was a row of heavy military tanks operated by people wearing the exact same uniform as Commander Thorne.
One of the soldiers stepped forward, lowering a heavy weapon straight at my chest.
"Welcome to the surface, Kiran," a voice called out from the lead tank. "The Author has been waiting for you."

The Final Choice
The heavy steel door of the control booth blasted inward, sending iron fragments flying across the room and shattering the silence.I dropped flat to the floor, pulling Lyra down with me just as a storm of heavy plasma fire tore through the space where we had been standing a second before. The air filled with the sharp stench of burning ozone and hot metal, stinging our throats as we scrambled behind the main generator console for cover."We missed someone," Leo shouted over the noise, pressing his back against the steel wall and pulling his empty blaster from his holster with a curse. "The regional enforcers didn't all retreat. There's a backup squad outside."I peeked around the side of the console. Through the smoke and flickering blue light of the stabilized thermal core
The Last Override
The cold barrel of Director Vance's plasma pistol pressed hard against Lyra's temple, and the entire room went dead silent.I froze in the doorway of the control booth, my hands dropping to my sides as my breath caught in my throat. Across the room, Leo stumbled back against a steel pipe, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at the woman we thought had been buried in the ruins of the Omega Station."Drop your hands, Kiran," Director Vance said, her voice steady and venomous. Her white coat was scorched and torn at the shoulders, but her grip on the weapon did not shake by a single millimeter. "One wrong move, and your little partner loses what is left of her head."Lyra did not flinch. Her single violet eye remained fixed on the thermal generator screen across the room, ign
The Fall of the District
The pavement broke open beneath our feet with a deafening crack, swallowing the street in a cloud of thick gray dust and falling stone.I threw my weight backward, grabbing Lyra by the jacket just as the edge of the asphalt gave way into a deep, dark chasm. We tumbled hard onto a narrow concrete ledge several feet below, coughing as the smoke and loose gravel rained down around us.Above us, the regional commander stood at the edge of the broken crater, his face twisted into an ugly, cruel smile as he held the smoking detonator in his hand."You think destroying the upper station saved this city, architect?" the commander shouted down, his voice echoing off the concrete walls of the trench. "The regional lockdown is hardcoded into the foundations of every single district. Wh
The First Dawn
The explosion of the Omega Station filled the morning sky with a wave of blinding white light that washed away every neon sign and digital screen across the entire Inner City.I hit the ground hard, rolling across the dusty pavement of an open street as the roaring sound of falling debris echoed all around us. The massive data rings that had hovered over New Seoul for ten long years broke apart into a million harmless sparks, fading away into the clear blue sky like morning mist. For the first time since I woke up in that cramped coffee shop on day one, the digital hum inside my head was completely gone."Kiran!"I sat up, coughing as I brushed the dust off my jacket. Lyra was kneeling beside me, her single violet e
Inside the Core
The digital wind tore past my face with the force of a falling freight train, blinding my eyes with millions of lines of racing white code.I did not hit the hard concrete of the lower city streets. Instead, my body dissolved into a stream of pure light as I plunged headfirst into the glowing data pipeline leading straight up to the Omega Station. The heat was fierce, burning like liquid fire against my skin, but I kept my hand clenched tightly around the small silver key Lyra had given me.Accessing core memory, a cold, artificial voice echoed from all directions inside my head. Warning: Unidentified architect signature detected. Initiate security wipe.A wall of black firewall blocks appeared in front of me, stacking up like giant bricks of iron across the data stream. The
The Chancellor's Return
The bulletproof glass of Director Vance's chest had not stopped her heart at all, and her clean white uniform proved she had never left the Inner Council's protection. She stood at the front of the gold-armored guards on the rooftop helipad, her gray eyes fixed on me with a cold, triumphant smile. The wound from the Syndicate cannon back in the underground engine room was completely gone, leaving not even a scar on her coat."You did not really think a simple plasma blast could delete a core director, did you, Kiran?" Director Vance asked, stepping forward as her boots clicked sharply against the concrete. "We programmed every death you experienced in New Seoul. Every ally you lost and every enemy you fought was just part of the test to see if your architecture was stable enough for mass release."
