The black sedan’s headlights cut through the Madrid smog like a pair of predatory yellow eyes. Alejandro didn’t wait for a second invitation. He sprinted out of the shop, the heavy bag of flour clutched against his chest like a holy relic, his heart drumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

"Hey! You! Coward in the car!" Alejandro shouted, his voice cracking midway. He immediately winced, his face flushing with mortification. "Man, I sound like a background character in a low-budget action flick. Why am I yelling at a machine?"

The sedan didn't accelerate toward him. Instead, it slowly reversed, tires crunching against the cobblestone, before peeling away into the labyrinthine alleys of the district. Alejandro stood frozen, his breath hitching in his chest. The System pinged in his peripheral vision, the blue light casting a ghostly hue over his frantic features.

[ ALERT: Target has relocated. Distance: 150 meters. ]

Alejandro wiped his sweating palms on his jeans. "Relocated? You make it sound like they just moved to a new apartment, not like they’re planning to turn me into a human pincushion. Great. Just great. Maybe I should have majored in something useful, like Parkour or Professional Assassin Dodging."

He began to run, his lungs burning as he darted around the corner. The streets of Madrid at this hour were usually filled with the clatter of cutlery and the murmur of wine-fueled debates, but tonight, the world felt distorted. As he rounded the corner, reality didn't just bend; it hiccuped.

A group of tourists stood nearby, laughing over a map. Alejandro stumbled into them, breathless, pointing down the empty street. "Did you see that? The black car? The one that just—"

He stopped. The air around him shimmered like a heat haze on asphalt. To the tourists, he must have looked like a wild-eyed lunatic, holding a bag of flour and talking to the thin air. The group stared at him with a mix of pity and concern.

"Is this guy trying to sell us something?" one woman whispered, clutching her purse.

"It’s a performance art piece, clearly," her companion muttered, pulling her away. "Too intense. Let’s go find some t***s."

Alejandro watched them retreat, his face burning. "Performance art? I’m going to be an obituary, not an artist! How do I explain this? 'Sorry, everyone, I’m not crazy, I just have a software update running in my eyeballs that’s trying to get me killed'?"

He leaned against a brick wall, sliding down until he hit the pavement. He looked at the dried flower in his hand—Isabella’s gift. He let out a shaky, self-deprecating laugh. "If I survive this, I’m definitely going to tell Isabella how I feel. I’ll walk right into her shop, look her in the eye, and say, 'Hey, I’m a total mess, I talk to invisible blue screens, and someone is trying to delete me from the planet. Want to go get coffee?' That’s the ultimate romantic gesture, right?"

The System hummed, a sharp, metallic sound that vibrated in his teeth.

[ OBJECTIVE: Maintain line of sight. Assassin is moving to vantage point. ]

Alejandro surged to his feet, discarding the flour bag. "Vantage point? Why is it always a roof? Do assassins get a tax break for having the high ground?"

He scrambled up a rusted metal fire escape attached to the side of a tall, narrow tenement building. Every step made a sound like a gunshot in the quiet night. He reached the top, his knees knocking together, and scanned the horizon.

That was when he saw her.

Standing on the edge of the adjacent rooftop, draped in a coat that seemed to absorb the moonlight, was a woman. She wasn't holding a gun. She was standing perfectly still, watching him with an expression of mild, almost bored, curiosity.

"Hey!" Alejandro shouted, balancing precariously on the ledge. "I know who you are! Well, I don't, but I know you're involved! Who sent you? The landlord? Marco? Some mysterious shadow organization?"

The woman tilted her head. She had a sharp, angular beauty, her hair tied back in a messy knot that somehow looked intentional. She looked like she belonged in a high-fashion magazine, not hovering over a guy about to be murdered.

"You're very loud for someone about to be erased," she called out, her voice cool and carrying effortlessly across the gap.

Alejandro blinked. "Erased? Is that what you call it? That’s remarkably unprofessional. Can we negotiate? I have, like, forty euros in my pocket and a really good recipe for gazpacho."

The woman didn't move. She stepped closer to the edge, her gaze piercing. "You have the System, yet you use it to interrogate petty thugs and talk to flowers. You’re an anomaly, Alejandro. A beautiful, stupid anomaly."

Alejandro’s breath caught in his throat. Not because of the danger, but because of the strange, electric thrill that shot through him at her words. "You know my name? Does that mean we’re dating now? Because I’m a sucker for a mysterious stalker, but usually I like to at least buy them a drink first."

She let out a single, sharp laugh—a sound like glass chiming. "I'm Camille. And if you want to stay alive, stop talking and start running. The real hitman doesn't have my patience."

"Wait! Camille!"

He lunged toward the edge of the building, reaching out as if to catch her, but the world flickered again. The space where she stood distorted, folding in on itself like a paper screen losing its integrity. She didn't jump; she simply dissolved into a cloud of static, leaving nothing behind but the scent of ozone and something delicate—like jasmine.

Alejandro tumbled forward, catching himself on the ledge just in time. He looked down at the empty roof, his heart hammering in a confusing mix of terror and intrigue.

[ WARNING: Hostile entity detected. Proximity: 10 meters. ]

He turned around. A laser sight, bright and crimson, appeared on his chest. He didn't look at the gun. He looked at the shadows behind the rooftop chimney.

"So," he whispered to the dark. "Who’s next in this ridiculous game?"

The figure stepped out, and Alejandro felt his blood run cold. It wasn't a stranger. It was someone who had access to his shop, his life, and his keys.

The story was just getting started, and the truth he was about to extract was going to break his heart before it broke his bones.

"It's erasing you from existence, because you are the Master Contract!"Alejandro’s entire body flickered, his vision blurring, the edges of his hands already transparent. He felt like a poorly rendered video game character about to despawn. The vast chamber around them pixelated, a symphony of light and shadow unraveling reality. His heart hammered, not just with fear, but with a profound, terrifying emptiness."Wait, wait, wait!" Alejandro stammered, his voice wavering, feeling his vocal cords dissolve. "Deleting me? Like, poof? Gone? No more artisanal cheese, no more bad jokes? That seems a bit dramatic, even for this System! Can't we just, I don't know, hit 'undo'?"Camille shook her head frantically, her eyes wide with a terror that mirrored his own. "There is no undo! The Master Contract is activating! It consumes the vessel to power itself!" She squeezed his arm tigh

Camille’s hand dropped, her face paling. The sirens grew louder, approaching fast, their red and blue lights painting frantic patterns across the alley walls. Her eyes, usually so guarded, filled with unshed tears, reflecting the emergency vehicles. Alejandro, however, merely blinked at her, his head tilted in genuine confusion."Look, I'm really sorry if I'm being rude," Alejandro said, his voice flat, devoid of the teasing spark she’d come to know. He gestured vaguely at the smoke still rising from the street, and the lingering smell of ozone. "But I think I just fought a… well, I don’t know what that was. A bad day? And my head feels like someone replaced my brain with lukewarm oatmeal. So, again, do I know you?"Camille felt a sharp, icy pang in her chest, a pain far deeper than any physical wound. She took a shaky breath, forcing the emotion down. "Alejandro, it's me. Camille. We've been through a lot. A lot of collapsing buildings, a few assassins, an exploding grocery store...

  • Chapter 7: The Price of Power

The shadow in Alejandro’s bedroom wasn't just a shadow. It was a man, tall and lean, his features indistinct in the dim light, yet carrying an aura of ancient malice. He held the missing page of the journal, a parchment yellowed with age, its text glowing faintly. "Game over, kid," he laughed, his voice a dry rasp that seemed to peel paint from the walls. Around them, the shop groaned, the very fabric of reality twisting like a wet rag. Shelves buckled, floorboards warped, and the air shimmered, the smell of burnt sugar and old paper replaced by the acrid tang of ozone.Alejandro spun, his mind reeling. "Who the hell are you? What have you done to my shop?"Camille, her face pale, lunged past him. "We have to go! He's not here to fight, he's here to destabilize!" She didn't bother with an explanation, merely grabbed Alejandro's arm, her grip shockingly strong, and dragged him towards a rapidly dissolving wall. "The shop is collapsing into a portal! We can't stay!"The man in the bedro

"If we stay, we aren't leaving as people, we’re leaving as footnotes!""I am officially done with magical architecture!" Alejandro yelled, scrambling up the shifting stone steps. "Why can’t we fight in a normal park? Maybe a nice, flat, non-sentient parking lot?""Because your life has to be as complicated as possible, apparently!" Unless you want to be a permanent part of the foundation," Camille hissed, her hand gripping his shoulder with enough force to bruise.Alejandro scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "I thought you said we were going to be safe! That looked like a cannon, not a glitch!"Camille swiped her hand through the air, and a shimmering, translucent wall of light—the color of a bruised plum—materialized, catching the incoming blast of energy and absorbing it with a low hum.
