The laser sight burned against Alejandro’s chest, a tiny, glowing dot of judgment. Before he could react, the figure stepped into the sliver of moonlight, and the air left Alejandro’s lungs in a pained wheeze. It wasn’t a faceless killer. It was Tomás, the manager of the upscale grocery chain that had been trying to buy out Alejandro’s family shop for months.

"Tomás?" Alejandro gasped, his hands trembling as he reached for the ledge. "What the hell are you doing with a sniper rifle? Are you serious right now? This is a business dispute, not a Call of Duty lobby!"

Tomás didn't fire. He lowered the weapon, his expensive Italian suit looking absurd against the grime of the rooftop. He smoothed his lapels with a practiced, oily grace. "Don't be dramatic, Alejandro. It’s a laser pointer, you idiot. I wanted to see if you’d jump. It’s a stress test. You’ve been acting erratic, and I need to know if you’re worth the trouble."

Alejandro felt the adrenaline spiking—a cocktail of terror and pure, unadulterated annoyance. He didn't jump. He stood up, shaking the dust off his jeans. "A stress test? You pointed a light at my heart on a roof at three in the morning? You’re not a businessman, Tomás. You’re a psychopath with a budget."

Tomás stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. "Let’s go to the cafe downstairs. We’re going to have a talk. And trust me, if you try to run, you’ll find that I have many more 'pointers' than just this one."

The cafe was quiet, the smell of burnt espresso masking the scent of fear radiating from Alejandro. They sat in a corner booth. The fluorescent lights hummed, and in the corner of Alejandro’s vision, the blue system interface flickered to life.

[ NEW CONTRACT: The Ego Trip ]

[ Target: Tomás Arce ]

[ Condition: Force the subject to confess his deepest insecurity in front of his peers. ]

[ Reward: Insight into the 'Contractor's' identity. ]

Alejandro gripped his mug, his knuckles white. "So, you’ve been stalking me for three days? Because you want a grocery store? That seems like a lot of overtime, even for you."

Tomás leaned forward, his voice a low, mocking whisper. "It’s not just the shop, kid. It’s what’s inside it. Your father had a ledger. A very specific, very dangerous set of accounts. I know you found it. Hand it over, and I’ll make sure your transition to poverty is... painless."

Alejandro forced a laugh, his heart drumming a frantic rhythm. "You really think I’m holding onto some secret accounting book? I’m holding onto a bag of flour and a dream, Tomás. You’re overthinking it. Why don't you just tell me why you're really desperate for that shop?"

"I don't have to explain my motives to a failure like you," Tomás snapped, his face reddening. "My reputation, my career, the expansion—everything depends on that property. I’m an architect of success, and you’re just a roach in the grout."

Alejandro leaned back, the system’s interface pulsing rhythmically. He needed to push. "An architect of success? Is that why your own board of directors thinks you're embezzling funds to cover your failed investments? Or is it just because you're scared of being found out?"

Tomás froze. His eyes widened, a flicker of genuine panic crossing his arrogant features. "Who told you that? You don't know anything!"

"I know enough," Alejandro pressed, his voice steadying. "Why don't you tell the truth, Tomás? Maybe if you were honest for once, you wouldn't be shaking like a leaf."

The system triggered. A ripple of blue light moved from Alejandro’s eyes toward Tomás.

Tomás clutched the table, his face contorting. He tried to stand, but his legs gave out. "I... I’m not a genius," he stammered, his voice loud enough for the barista to look over. "I’m a fraud! I lost the company’s entire quarterly budget on a crypto-scam! I’m drowning in debt, and I’m going to prison if I don't close this acquisition!"

The cafe went dead silent. The barista stopped wiping the counter. Tomás stared at the room, horrified, his hands over his mouth. He looked like a man who had just realized he’d stripped naked in public.

Alejandro stood up, his heart soaring. "Sounds like you’ve got a busy week, Tomás. Don't worry, I’m sure prison has great networking opportunities."

Tomás scrambled up, his face a mask of pure, murderous hatred. "You! You little rat! I don't know how you did that, but I swear on my life, you’re finished. You think you’re so clever with your little tricks? I know who you really are, Alejandro. I know the lineage you’re trying to hide. You aren't just a shopkeeper. You’re the reason they’re coming for all of us!"

He turned and bolted out of the cafe, leaving Alejandro standing in the sudden, deafening silence.

Alejandro slumped back into the chair, the weight of the moment crashing down on him. The system pulsed softly, a golden light now swirling around the notification.

[ CONTRACT COMPLETE. REWARD GRANTED: Insight into Contractor. ]

A new image materialized in his mind—not a name, but a map. It was a floor plan of the bookstore next door. And in the center of the image, marked in red, was a small, familiar object: the same dried flower Isabella had given him.

His blood turned to ice. He looked toward the door, where Isabella’s bookstore sat in the dark, silent and inviting.

"Isabella?" he whispered to the empty air.

He didn't notice the shadow watching him from across the street until it was too late. A phone buzzed on the table. It was Tomás’s, left behind in his frantic retreat. Alejandro picked it up. A message blinked on the screen from an unknown sender.

Phase Two starts at dawn. Target the girl if the boy refuses to yield.*

Alejandro felt the world tilt. The game wasn't just about him anymore. It was about the only person who made his life feel like something worth living. He stood up, his decision made. He wasn't going to hide. He was going to war. But as he stepped out into the night, he realized the shadow wasn't moving away from him—it was waiting for him at the threshold of Isabella’s shop.

He reached into his pocket, his fingers brushing against his phone and a small, sharp knife he’d grabbed from the shop. The night was growing colder, and for the first time, he realized that if he wanted to save her, he would have to become the very thing he feared the most.

"Game on," he muttered, heading toward the light of the bookstore. He didn't know if he would survive the sunrise, but as he reached the door, he saw a light flicker on inside—Isabella was waiting. And behind her, the silhouette of a man holding a silenced pistol stepped out from the back office.

Alejandro’s breath hitched. He had only seconds. He reached for the handle, his hand glowing with the power of the next contract.

This wasn't just a mission anymore. It was a rescue. And he was already running out of time.

"It's deleting you, Alejandro," Camille whispered, tears streaming down her face, her grip on his arm desperate. "It's erasing you from existence, because you are the Master Contract!"Alejandro’s entire body flickered, his vision blurring, the edges of his hands already transparent. He felt like a poorly rendered video game character about to despawn. The vast chamber around them pixelated, a symphony of light and shadow unraveling reality. His heart hammered, not just with fear, but with a profound, terrifying emptiness."Wait, wait, wait!" Alejandro stammered, his voice wavering, feeling his vocal cords dissolve. "Deleting me? Like, poof? Gone? No more artisanal cheese, no more bad jokes? That seems a bit dramatic, even for this System! Can't we just, I don't know, hit 'undo'?"Camille shook her head frantically, her eyes wide with a terror that mirrored his own. "There is no undo! The Master Contract is activating! It consumes the vessel to power itself!" She squeezed his arm tigh

Alejandro yelled, his voice raw, even as the System’s chilling message burned behind his eyes: [ YOUR MANUFACTURED MEMORY: A SYSTEM INITIATED REWARD FOR CONSISTENT HOST ENGAGEMENT. ] The crushing realization that the profound love he’d just felt was a lie, a reward, slammed into him. • Chapter 8: A Stranger's Kiss

Camille’s hand dropped, her face paling. The sirens grew louder, approaching fast, their red and blue lights painting frantic patterns across the alley walls. Her eyes, usually so guarded, filled with unshed tears, reflecting the emergency vehicles. Alejandro, however, merely blinked at her, his head tilted in genuine confusion."Look, I'm really sorry if I'm being rude," Alejandro said, his voice flat, devoid of the teasing spark she’d come to know. He gestured vaguely at the smoke still rising from the street, and the lingering smell of ozone. "But I think I just fought a… well, I don’t know what that was. A bad day? And my head feels like someone replaced my brain with lukewarm oatmeal. So, again, do I know you?"Camille felt a sharp, icy pang in her chest, a pain far deeper than any physical wound. She took a shaky breath, forcing the emotion down. "Alejandro, it's me. Camille. We've been through a lot. A lot of collapsing buildings, a few assassins, an exploding grocery store...

  • Chapter 7: The Price of Power

The shadow in Alejandro’s bedroom wasn't just a shadow. It was a man, tall and lean, his features indistinct in the dim light, yet carrying an aura of ancient malice. He held the missing page of the journal, a parchment yellowed with age, its text glowing faintly. "Game over, kid," he laughed, his voice a dry rasp that seemed to peel paint from the walls. Around them, the shop groaned, the very fabric of reality twisting like a wet rag. Shelves buckled, floorboards warped, and the air shimmered, the smell of burnt sugar and old paper replaced by the acrid tang of ozone.Alejandro spun, his mind reeling. "Who the hell are you? What have you done to my shop?"Camille, her face pale, lunged past him. "We have to go! He's not here to fight, he's here to destabilize!" She didn't bother with an explanation, merely grabbed Alejandro's arm, her grip shockingly strong, and dragged him towards a rapidly dissolving wall. "The shop is collapsing into a portal! We can't stay!"The man in the bedro

Camille screamed, shoving Alejandro toward a spiraling staircase that manifested out of thin air. "If we stay, we aren't leaving as people, we’re leaving as footnotes!""I am officially done with magical architecture!" Alejandro yelled, scrambling up the shifting stone steps. "Why can’t we fight in a normal park? Maybe a nice, flat, non-sentient parking lot?""Because your life has to be as complicated as possible, apparently!" Camille surged past him, her boots clicking sharply against the stairs. She grabbed his arm, pulling him through a crack in reality that smelled of ozone and old dust. They tumbled out into the cold, damp air of the alleyway behind the bookstore. The world did not dissolve into white static. Instead, it shrieked—a high-pitched, discordant sound like a thousand modems connecting at once. Alejandro braced himself for death, but instead, he felt a sharp yank on his jacket that sent him sprawling face-first into the damp concrete of the subway tunnel."Get up, you idiot! Unless you want to be a permanent part of the foundation," Camille hissed, her hand gripping his shoulder with enough force to bruise.Alejandro scrambled to his feet, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "I thought you said we were going to be safe! That looked like a cannon, not a glitch!"Camille swiped her hand through the air, and a shimmering, translucent wall of light—the color of a bruised plum—materialized, catching the incoming blast of energy and absorbing it with a low hum.
