The library-beast shrieked, a sound like tearing metal that vibrated in Alejandro’s very bone marrow. The ceiling-eye focused on them, dilating until the room felt like it was drowning in a pool of ink.

"Run!" Camille screamed, shoving Alejandro toward a spiraling staircase that manifested out of thin air. "If we stay, we aren't leaving as people, we’re leaving as footnotes!"

"I am officially done with magical architecture!" Alejandro yelled, scrambling up the shifting stone steps. "Why can’t we fight in a normal park? Maybe a nice, flat, non-sentient parking lot?"

"Because your life has to be as complicated as possible, apparently!" Camille surged past him, her boots clicking sharply against the stairs. She grabbed his arm, pulling him through a crack in reality that smelled of ozone and old dust.

They tumbled out into the cold, damp air of the alleyway behind the bookstore. Alejandro gasped, his lungs burning as he collapsed against a brick wall. The portal vanished, leaving behind only the scent of jasmine and the lingering hum of the System. He looked at Camille. Her hair was a mess, her coat torn, and her eyes—usually so cold—were wide with a flicker of raw, unfiltered fear.

"We made it," he wheezed, his heart hammering against his ribs. "We are technically alive. Does this count as a date? I feel like we should be at a restaurant, not a dumpster."

Camille laughed, a breathless, surprised sound. She leaned in, her hand brushing a smudge of ink off his cheek. "You are an absolute moron, Alejandro. You almost died, you nearly became a literal bookmark, and you’re still thinking about dinner?"

"Well, the alternative is thinking about how my father was apparently some kind of secret supernatural landlord," he said, catching her hand. His pulse skipped a beat as she didn't pull away. "I need to know, Camille. If I’m a vessel, what did he leave for me?"

"You're not just a vessel," she whispered, her voice dropping into something softer, deeper. "You're the key."

An hour later, they were back in the cramped, dusty office of his family store. Alejandro had pulled his father’s old floor safe from beneath the floorboards—the one he had never been able to crack. He didn't need a code; he just placed his hand on the metal. The System hummed, the interface flickering with a new prompt: [IDENTITY VERIFICATION: BLOODLINE CONFIRMED].

"Whoa," Alejandro muttered, his eyes wide. "The safe is literally a biometric scanner. My dad was way more 'spy-adjacent' than I gave him credit for."

Camille leaned against the doorframe, her gaze sharp, watching the street. "Your father wasn't just a merchant, Alejandro. He was a Warden. He kept the System in check so that it couldn't consume the city. But he got careless."

"Careless? He got killed!" Alejandro snapped, then sighed, his shoulders slumping. He pulled a thick, leather-bound journal from the safe. "If he was a Warden, why am I the one dealing with all these crazy missions?"

"Because you inherited the debt," Camille said, walking over to stand behind him. Her presence was a warm weight at his back. She pointed to a sketch in the journal—a map of their own district, overlaid with pulsing, glowing ley lines. "Look. This isn't just your shop. It’s an anchor point."

"Great. I’m the keystone of reality and I still can’t get the espresso machine to stop leaking," Alejandro groaned. "Wait, look at this. It says the bloodline of the Velez family was the original architect of the interface."

"You built the prison you’re trapped in," Camille whispered.

Before he could answer, a loud thud echoed against the front door. Then, the rhythmic, heavy sound of a battering ram.

"Tomás," Alejandro hissed, his jaw clenching. "He’s back. And he’s brought friends."

"Stay here," Camille said, drawing her blade. "I’ll handle the muscle."

"No, we’re doing this my way," Alejandro stood up, the journal clutched in one hand. "I’m tired of running."

He walked to the front of the shop. Tomás stood there with three men in tactical gear, looking like he’d crawled out of a corporate dumpster.

"Hand over the ledger, Alejandro!" Tomás shouted, his face purple with rage. "You’ve made me look like an amateur! I’m going to dismantle you and this dump brick by brick!"

Alejandro felt the System surge. [SKILL STOLEN: COMBAT ANALYSIS]*.

He looked at the three thugs. He could see their movements before they made them, tiny glowing lines tracing their potential strikes. It was like a video game interface laid over real life.

"You want the truth, Tomás?" Alejandro stepped forward, his heart calm for the first time. "You’re not a businessman. You’re a placeholder. You’re a glitch that the system is about to patch out."

Tomás gestured to the thugs. "Get him!"

The first thug lunged. Alejandro sidestepped with an ease that felt like dancing, his hand darting out to snatch the man’s weapon. He felt the weight of the pistol—it was light, familiar, almost intuitive. He didn't fire; he simply dismantled the slide and tossed the parts across the floor.

"How—?" the thug gasped, stumbling back.

"I’m a quick learner," Alejandro said, his eyes glowing with that faint, ethereal blue light. He felt Camille watching him from the shadows, a small, impressed smile playing on her lips. "And you’re out of your league."

He swept the next two men off their feet with a sudden, violent burst of kinetic energy he didn't know he possessed. They groaned, clutching their ribs, while Tomás stood frozen in the doorway, staring at Alejandro as if he were a monster.

"You... you’re supposed to be a loser!" Tomás shrieked. "You’re supposed to be broke!"

"I am broke," Alejandro chuckled, walking toward him. "But I’m definitely not a loser anymore."

Tomás bolted, disappearing into the dark Madrid street. Alejandro didn't chase him. He felt too tired, too drained. He turned back to the shop, where Camille was waiting.

"You actually did it," she said, her voice filled with a strange, burgeoning warmth. "You fought back without me saving your life for once."

"Does this mean I get a promotion?" Alejandro asked, trying to keep his voice light as he looked at her.

"It means you have a long night ahead," she said, stepping closer. Her hand rested on his chest, right over his heart. "We have to decode the rest of that journal before the morning reset."

Just then, a digital, flickering projection materialized in the center of the room. It was his father, recorded years ago, his face tired but resolute.

"Alejandro," the recording said. "If you’re seeing this, you’ve realized the truth. The shop isn't a business. It’s a tomb. And the killer who sent the contract on you? They aren't trying to take the store. They’re trying to open the vault underneath it. And they're already inside your home."

Alejandro’s blood turned to ice. He looked at Camille. "Inside my home?"

"Behind you," she whispered, her eyes widening.

Alejandro spun around. The shadow was no longer outside. It was standing in his bedroom, holding the last page of the journal—a page he hadn't even realized was missing.

"Game over, kid," the shadow laughed, and the shop began to fold into itself again.

"It's erasing you from existence, because you are the Master Contract!"Alejandro’s entire body flickered, his vision blurring, the edges of his hands already transparent. He felt like a poorly rendered video game character about to despawn. The vast chamber around them pixelated, a symphony of light and shadow unraveling reality. His heart hammered, not just with fear, but with a profound, terrifying emptiness."Wait, wait, wait!" Alejandro stammered, his voice wavering, feeling his vocal cords dissolve. "Deleting me? Like, poof? Gone? No more artisanal cheese, no more bad jokes? That seems a bit dramatic, even for this System! Can't we just, I don't know, hit 'undo'?"Camille shook her head frantically, her eyes wide with a terror that mirrored his own. "There is no undo! The Master Contract is activating! It consumes the vessel to power itself!" She squeezed his arm tigh

Camille’s hand dropped, her face paling. The sirens grew louder, approaching fast, their red and blue lights painting frantic patterns across the alley walls. Her eyes, usually so guarded, filled with unshed tears, reflecting the emergency vehicles. Alejandro, however, merely blinked at her, his head tilted in genuine confusion."Look, I'm really sorry if I'm being rude," Alejandro said, his voice flat, devoid of the teasing spark she’d come to know. He gestured vaguely at the smoke still rising from the street, and the lingering smell of ozone. "But I think I just fought a… well, I don’t know what that was. A bad day? And my head feels like someone replaced my brain with lukewarm oatmeal. So, again, do I know you?"Camille felt a sharp, icy pang in her chest, a pain far deeper than any physical wound. She took a shaky breath, forcing the emotion down. "Alejandro, it's me. Camille. We've been through a lot. A lot of collapsing buildings, a few assassins, an exploding grocery store...

Around them, the shop groaned, the very fabric of reality twisting like a wet rag. Shelves buckled, floorboards warped, and the air shimmered, the smell of burnt sugar and old paper replaced by the acrid tang of ozone.Alejandro spun, his mind reeling. "Who the hell are you? What have you done to my shop?"Camille, her face pale, lunged past him. "We have to go! He's not here to fight, he's here to destabilize!" She didn't bother with an explanation, merely grabbed Alejandro's arm, her grip shockingly strong, and dragged him towards a rapidly dissolving wall. "The shop is collapsing into a portal! We can't stay!"The man in the bedro
