"Where am I?"

Tyson found himself in an odd place. It was plain white, and he could not see the ceiling or walls.

"What is this place? Is it a dream?"

He walked around the place for what felt like an hour trying to reach the end. "Last thing I recalled was fighting that witch." He uttered, clenching his fist. "And I lost."

"Argh!!!" He shouted from the bottom of his lungs. "It's so frustrating. I had her in my clutches and what did I do?"

He yanked his hair. "I toyed with her, I had the power to end her with a single strike, I knew I did."

He continued walking through the infinite space.

"Wait, what happened after she knocked me out? What if I die and this is the afterlife?" He plopped to his knees.

Tyson balls up his fist and slammed the floor, making an odd "Thud" sound.

"I'm such a loser!"

He shouted, feeling nothing but rage and regret. He continued slamming the floor.

"Only a loser will die like that..." Tyson paused. "What's the point? This has always been the law of the universe. There are only two kinds of people in the universe. Those who are strong and the rest. The rest does not matter. I'm part of the weak and, as such, my life has been a shitty ride."

He burst into a peel of uncontrollable laughter. It was as if he had lost his mind.

"What's the point in having regrets now?" He sits on the floor. "This is the fate of the weak. To suffer at the hands of the strong. To be at the receiving end of their oppression and in the end. To be met with an untimely death."

"What nonsense is this one spouting?" He heard a voice from behind.

Tyson jolts up and turns in the direction of the voice.

"Who are you?"

"Who am I? What do you think?"

Tyson took a step back. What he saw was no man. He did have the shape of a man, but his skin was completely black as night with multiple golden spots around his body.

"I've got nothing." Tyson casually replied, making the man plop to the floor comically.

"You're a blunt one, aren't you?"

"Well, what can I say? I've got nothing to lose now that I'm dead."

"Pfft, hahaha." The man laughs.

"Tck, what's so funny?"

"You actually think that you're dead?"

Tyson widened his eyes. "I'm not?"

"Where do you think we are?"

Tyson looked around him. "Once again, no idea man."

The man facepalmed. "You really don't know, huh?" He had finally given up. "Be rest assured, you're not dead. Your soul might have been temporarily severed from your body, but you're alive."

He spreads his arms apart.

"And this is the astral plane."

"Ohh, okay," Tyson replied nonchalantly.

"..."

"What?" The man didn't have a face nor eyes, yet Tyson could feel the man's glare.

"Really? Nothing? Only one in a million gets a chance to visit this place, and you seem completely calm about it."

Tyson scratches his head. "Well, you see... I've never heard of an astral plane before." He admits sheepishly.

The man facepalmed again, not believing how carefree Tyson was.

"Alright buster," Said Tyson. "You answered the where. Now tell me, who you are!"

"Now you seem to show some interest?" The man sits on the floor with his legs crossed.

"I figured you brought me here for a reason and I won't be able to leave until I get to the bottom of things. So," Tyson sits as well. "Start talking. Who or what are you and why did you bring me here?"

"I am what you call an Etherian."

Tyson gasped.

"Finally, some reaction from you!" He was amazed by how Tyson remained calm throughout their conversations until this point.

"If I knew all it'd take to get a reaction from you was to reveal my identity, I would have started with that."

Tyson didn't pay heed to the man's comment. The name "Etherian" sent a chill running through his spine.

"Etherian as one of the 3 mythical races."

"Yup," The man nods his head.

"Here I am, thinking that the stories we were told as children about the three Mythical races were nothing but folklore. But here you are. And Etherian in the flesh." Tyson finished with glimmers in his eyes.

"Well, technically, us Etherians do not have a physical body, and as such you may even refer to us as spirits."

"What does an Etherian want with me?"

"And you're back to your usual demeanor." The man made a sighing sound. He gets up and stretches his hand out to Tyson.

"I want you to become my Vessel."

"I'm back!"

Tyson finds himself back inside the Ebon Phantom.

"Then again, that thing did say that I never left." He looked around the room he was in.

It was different from the room he had been kept earlier when Victor saved him.

Tyson jolts up from the bed and makes his way to the hallways in search for the captain of the cruiser.

"Where is that sneaky bastard?"

Tyson had his back against a door as it opened up, and he fell through.

"Oh good," Victor was standing atop him with his hands resting on his waist. Besides him was Xing.

"I was just about to come to get you."

Tyson winced in pain as he lifted himself. "Where are we?" He looked past the two and scanned the room in awe.

"Oh, this? Hehe, that was why I wanted to come get you", Victor explained, wearing his usual grin.

Tyson found himself in a gymnasium with a fighting ring in the middle.

Victor tugged the hand of the white-haired teen and dragged him into the ring.

"We're going to train!" He declared, much to Tyson's surprise.

"Eh?"

"I mean, I'm going to train you."

"I know what you meant. What I mean is, why?"

"Because I want you to join the Ebon Phantom crew and venture through the cosmos with Xing and me." Tyson glanced at Xing, who darted him a murderous look.

She was displeased by Victor's motive, but there was nothing she could do. He was her captain.

"You want me to become a criminal space pirate?"

Victor scratched his head and laughed sheepishly. "Well, when you put it like that..."

"I'm in," Tyson said calmly.

'Honestly, this is by far the most normal thing that has happened to me today.' He thought to himself, recalling his time on the astral plane before he woke up.

Victor laughed. "I'll admit, I didn't expect to receive an answer from you right away!" He slapped Tyson on the back.

"What did you expect?"

"I don't know," Victor replied. "I figured you'd be hell-bent on getting as far away from a criminal like me and starts planning your revenge elsewhere."

"I did think of that." That was, in fact, Tyson's intended course of action. That was until the association surrounded them.

"I can't make them pay if I couldn't even get an A-Grade. I was blinded by my rage. I can't do this alone. So, use me as you please, captain. But I'll be using you as well." Tyson stretches his arm.

'I'll make a deal with a hundred devils if that's what it'll take to have my revenge.'

"Haha, that's more like it!" Victor quickly accepted the handshake.

'He has a firm grip unlike any I've ever felt.' Tyson had his doubts at the beginning. But he was certain...

'This man is strong. He's the best shot I have at becoming stronger. And until I learn more about that Etherian. I won't tell them what happened just yet.'

"Xing," Victor turned to address the Android. "From this day onwards, this man, Tyson Bronze, is our comrade!"

Xing's next action caught Tyson off guard.

"I welcome you to the Ebon Phantom crew." She bowed her head.

Not knowing what to do at this point, Tyson bowed his head as well. "I'm in your care now." He uttered a smile.

Xing frowned at him. "Don't get me wrong, I still don't like you."

"Tck, the feeling's mutual."

"Haha," Victor laughed. "Now, let's get to work."

"Before that, I've been meaning to ask you... What exactly happened after I passed out and what came over me when those hunters invaded the ship?"

Victor went on to narrate how Xing intercepted Mistique's attack and knocked her out.

'I figured they'd keep her around. He may not look at the role. But this man is cunning.' Tyson admitted to himself.

"Thank you," he said. "You've saved my life twice now."

"I see no point in letting you die the second time after we took the trouble to save you in the first place. Plus, I invested a lot in your new power." Victor pointed out.

"I knew it!" Tyson exclaimed.

"You did something with my Astro tech, didn't you? I felt a weird sensation when I grabbed it."

"Hehe, I'll come clean." Victor waved his hands in the air.

"I replaced your Astro tech's core with a new one."

All Astro technology possess a core, a rock of some sort that possesses astral energy depending on its color.

The usual Astro tech given to bounty hunters of the association is usually White or Red, depending on their rank.

"This will bring us to our first lesson, "Victor raised a finger. "Astral itself. We're starting with the basics."

"Tck, just tell me what you did exactly!" Tyson snapped.

"I'm getting to it. You see, Astral is the energy of the Universe. It exists within everything and everyone."

"Why are you telling me things I know?"

"Is that so? Then tell me, why can't you create an astral skin without Astro tech?"

Tyson clicked his tongue, he didn't have an answer to that.

"Anyone skilled enough can create an astral skin. This brings us back to Astro tech. Having an Astro tech will allow you to create an astral skin by tapping into the power within the Astro rock." Victor held his hand out and Xing places Tyson's Astro tech on his palm.

He holds out the device which could turn into a whip.

"You were so restless when those hunters attacked that you didn't pay attention to that." Victor pointed at the back of the device. He opens a compartment and takes out a black gemstone.

"This is the Astro rock I put in place of yours."

Tyson nods his head. "So my power from earlier came from this rock?"

"Yep, you see, white Astro rocks have the weakest astral particles in them. And black Astro rocks have the highest. This was how you got the black astral skin."

An Astro-tech's main purpose is to allow individuals who have small amounts of astral particles in them to create astral skins, which are the basis for combat.

"I've never seen or heard of a black Astro rock before... It must be rare, so why give it to someone you barely knew?"

"Hmm," Victor rubs his chin. He shrugged and grins. "Let's just say... I'm investing in the future."

"Fine by me." Tyson smiled.

"So, what will you be teaching me?"

"I am not finished yet. You see, the reason black Astro rocks are extremely rare is that they can only be used once in an Astro tech."

Tyson widened his eyes. "And here I thought I had received a new power!" He whined.

"Haha, you didn't let me finish, snow-white. An Astro rock serves as a battery and channel for both the Astro tech and its wielder. But in this case, when a black Astro rock is used up, it modifies the astral particles of the user. Now, you don't need an astro-tech to  harness the black astral skin".

Tyson listened to all of Victor's explanations attentively, especially the last part.

He looked at his hands. "What you're saying is... That power is all mine now?"

"Yup," Victor nods his head. "That is, once you learn how to harness it. And finally, that brings us to why we'll be training."

Tyson pondered for a while before wearing a wide grin.

"Let's do this thing!"
