The moment Karvel stepped through the revolving doors of the Imperial Star Hotel, he felt the shift in the air. Years of training had honed his senses to detect danger before it materialized. His eyes darted across the street, catching glimpses of shadowy figures lurking between parked cars.

These aren't ordinary street thugs, Karvel thought, casually adjusting his watch while scanning the area. They move with military precision. Leo must have called in his personal goons.

Two black SUVs with tinted windows were parked across the street. As Karvel approached his Porsche, one of the vehicles' engines roared to life.

"Mr. Cross, shall I have security escort you?" the hotel doorman asked, noticing Karvel's hesitation.

"Not necessary," Karvel replied coolly. "But keep an eye on those vehicles. If anything happens, alert the manager."

The doorman nodded respectfully. "Of course, sir."

Karvel slid into his Porsche and pulled out of the parking lot, immediately noticing the SUVs falling in l

The morning sun filtered through the laboratory's tall windows as Karvel meticulously arranged the new samples that had arrived from the affected family's residence. Each specimen was carefully catalogued and placed in individual containment units, the potential danger requiring extreme precision in handling procedures. Finally, Karvel thought as he examined the environmental samples under his microscope. These should provide the missing piece of the puzzle. The pathogen has to have an environmental source. The laboratory door swung open with unnecessary force, and Sophia Yale strode in wearing a tight-fitting dress that was completely inappropriate for a medical facility. Her high heels clicked against the sterile floor as she approached Karvel's workstation with obvious determination."Well, well," Sophia announced loudly, "if it isn't the man who thinks he's too good for the Yale family."Karvel looked up from his microscope briefly before returning to his work. "Sophia, this is a

Leo Romano sat in his opulent study, swirling a glass of aged whiskey as he contemplated the events of the previous evening. The humiliation of his brother-in-law had initially angered him, but upon reflection, he found himself viewing the incident through an entirely different lens."Thompson," Leo called to his security chief, who stood at attention near the office door."What's your assessment of the Sebastian Sterling situation after last night's incident?"Thompson consulted his notes before responding."Sir, based on Ethan Carter's testimony, Sterling deliberately avoided physical violence specifically because of your family connection. He showed restraint that contradicts his usual brutality.""Exactly," Leo said with growing satisfaction."Sebastian Sterling isn't just some mindless thug after all. He's calculating enough to recognize superior authority when he sees it."This changes everything, Leo thought, his strategic mind already formulating new possibilities. If Sterling

The insult hit Ethan like a physical blow, and he lunged forward with his fists raised. However, Torres stepped between them with fluid efficiency, his massive frame blocking Ethan's attack without even appearing to exert effort."Careful there, little man," Torres said quietly, his voice carrying obvious menace. "Wouldn't want you to hurt yourself.""Get away from me!" Ethan screamed, his voice cracking with panic as he realized the size and danger of Sebastian's security team. "I'm protected! Leo Romano will destroy you for this!""Protected?" Sebastian laughed cruelly, the sound echoing across the suddenly silent casino floor. "Is that what you call cowering behind your sister's marriage? How embarrassing for the Romano family."Sebastian stepped closer, his voice dropping to a whisper that somehow seemed more terrifying than any shout. "Let me tell you something, you pathetic little worm. The only reason you're still standing is because of Leo Romano's reputation. But even family

The sterile white walls of the Yale Medical Center's research wing hummed with quiet intensity as Karvel bent over a microscope, his trained eyes studying tissue samples that had baffled Carson City's most experienced physicians for weeks. The mystery case had consumed his attention for three days straight – a family of seven, all presenting with completely different symptoms despite being exposed to the same unknown pathogen."Any progress, Mr. Cross?" Dr. Yale asked quietly, entering the laboratory where Karvel had essentially taken up residence."More than your other specialists achieved," Karvel replied without looking up from his work."They made the classic mistake of assuming different symptoms meant different causes. In reality, we're dealing with a single pathogen that affects different organ systems based on individual genetic predispositions."Dr. Yale moved closer, his curiosity evident. "That's... that's actually brilliant. But identifying the specific pathogen...""Will

Dr. Yale's office felt charged with anticipation as he waited for Karvel's response to his generous offers. The distinguished physician had rarely encountered someone whose medical abilities so thoroughly impressed him, and he was prepared to make whatever concessions necessary to secure Karvel's services."Dr. Yale, I truly appreciate your confidence in my abilities," Karvel began, his tone respectful but firm. "However, I must decline your offer of permanent employment."Dr. Yale's face fell slightly, though he tried to maintain his professional composure. "May I ask why? The compensation package would be extremely generous, and you'd have access to resources most physicians only dream of.""I value my independence too highly to commit to any single institution," Karvel explained. "However, I would be willing to consult on particularly challenging cases – the ones your regular staff can't solve."At least that's something, Dr. Yale thought, his disappointment tempered by the prospec

"What's troubling you, Sophia? You seem unusually flustered.""It's about Karvel Cross," Sophia said, settling into the leather chair across
