RYAN

The air crackled with hostility.

The gangster, who I now mentally labeled Dante, ignored the rest of his hostile family and began advancing on me, his three friends closing ranks behind him.

Julian snapped forward, placing himself between us.

“Dante, step back now! You will address the heir with respect! I will discipline you for this insolence!”

Dante hissed, a sound of pure refusal, but he stopped just short of Julian’s shoulder.

He stared directly at me, giving me a hard, cold look that plainly said, I am watching you.

You are dead the moment you fail.

I was silent, taking in the full spectacle. The line of hostile faces ,the elegant woman, the corporate man, the anxious elder all staring at me with piercing, judgmental eyes.

MARCOI stood where she told me to stand, close enough to hear her voice, far enough to remind me of my place.“You are going to stand here and be with me while I work,” Elizabeth said calmly, “You are close to Ryan, so Marco, I need you. If you behave well, you will see your son.”Her words were clean, Controlled and Carefully chosen. That was what made them dangerous. She sat there sipping her hot coffee, one leg crossed over the other, completely relaxed while my world burned. She talked about my child like he was a favor she could grant or withdraw. It was leverage to her, Like property. The stupid woman was giving me options, pretending this was some kind of negotiation. First, she told me I should help kidnap someone close to Ryan. Now standing beside her like a loyal servant, earning minutes with my own son.I clenched my jaw and said nothing.I wanted to tell. I wanted to jump across the table and grab her by the throat. But rage wouldn’t bring my boy back.Survival would.

Still, a small part of me hoped this plan Julian had this counter-narrative, the one that finally might expose Elizabeth without risking Mary further would actually work. The thought gave me a fleeting sense of calm, though the violence and chaos we’d endured weighed heavily on meI hated it all. I hated myself for every fight, every calculated move, every moment I’d chosen vengeance over peace.I moved toward my desk, opening the top drawer and sorting files. These would go straight to the Meridian Oversight Group.Once they did their work, the press would release a controlled story one that would force Elizabeth into the open without compromising the secret of the Shadow HeirIt was precise, calculated and perfect. My hope was that Mary would still be alive by the time it all unfoldedAs I stepp

Since defeating Rachel, my life hasn’t slowed for even a breath. One fight bled into another. One crisis replaced the last, Some of it still lives in me, unhealed, replaying when I close my eyes. Just to get Ryan.I swallowed hard as I stepped out of the car. She’s serious, I thought so. Desperate and dangerous.“I’m sorry, Ryan,” I said under my breath as I walked forward. “I have to do this to save my child. He has to come first.”It hurt to admit it, but it was the truth. I had reached the point where caring about anything else was a luxury I could no longer afford. My son came before anyone. And somehow, I knew Ryan would understand.
