His voice was quiet but it cut through the room like a blade, and all four of them went still.
Madison's face flushed red, her hands moving to pull the slip higher, to cover herself, but she stopped halfway and looked at him with something raw and desperate in her eyes. "Is it that we are not beautiful enough for you? Is that it? Are we not good enough?"
Brooklyn's voice cracked when she spoke. "All this time, Derek. All this time we have been here with you. Side by side, every single day. And you just keep pushing us away like we are nothing. Like we mean nothing."
Savannah's jaw tightened, her arms dropping to her sides, and when she spoke her voice was the quietest of the four but somehow it carried the furthest. "What are we missing? Tell us. Just tell us so we know."
Derek looked at each of them in turn, really looked at them, and for a moment the room was quiet except for the sound of their breathing, uneven and shallow. "You are beautiful," he said finally. "All four of you. Anyone with eyes can see that."
"Then why—"
"Because I do not have time for this." His voice was quiet but it cut through the room like a blade. "I have spent fifteen years on this mountain. Fifteen years learning, training, waiting. And now I am finally leaving, and when I do, I have things I need to accomplish. People I need to find. Questions I need answered. And women—" He stopped himself, exhaled slowly, and met each of their eyes in turn. "Women are not part of that plan. Not yet. Maybe not ever. I do not know. But right now, today, this is not something I can carry."
The silence that followed was heavy and thick, the kind of silence that pressed down on a room until someone broke under the weight of it.
Sophia's hands trembled as she pulled her robe closed and tied the sash tight around her waist. Madison tugged the slip down and crossed her arms over her chest. Brooklyn fumbled with the top of her dress, her fingers shaking as she fastened the buttons one by one. Savannah stood there for a moment longer, completely still, completely exposed, and then she turned away and picked up the shirt she had left by the door.
Brooklyn's jaw tightened, her eyes went glassy, and when she spoke her voice trembled just slightly at the edges. "Fine. Fine, Derek. If that is how you feel, then we will wait."
"Wait?" he repeated.
"Yes. Wait." Sophia stepped forward again, fully dressed now, and this time there was no softness in her expression at all, just cold determination. "However long it takes. Months. Years. We do not care. But the moment you leave this mountain, we are coming with you. All four of us. And if you ever...ever get close to another woman, if you so much as look at someone else the way you refuse to look at us, that woman is going to regret the day she was born. Do you understand me?"
Madison nodded sharply. "We will make sure of it."
Savannah's smile was thin and dangerous. "She will not even see us coming."
Derek opened his mouth to respond, to tell them how insane that sounded, to argue, to do something, but before he could get a single word out the sound of footsteps echoed from the corridor outside heavy footsteps, fast and purposeful, the kind that belonged to someone who had traveled a long distance without rest.
The door opened again.
A man stood there, broad-shouldered and dusty from the road, his cloak marked with the seal of the supreme massager guard, and in his hands he carried two scrolls, one sealed with red wax and the other with black.
And that was when the scroll arrived.

Chapter 9
Hearing what Doctor Cole had just said, hearing him tell them that Old Master West was beyond saving, that no matter what anyone tried to do for him at this point he was going to die, Patricia's mother felt something inside her chest collapse, and the tears came before she could stop them, spilling down her cheeks as she turned and buried her face against her husband's shoulder, holding onto him so tightly her fingers went white against the fabric of his suit. She had not been ready for this. She had known her father was sick, had known his condition was serious, but hearing a doctor as skilled and as respected as Doctor Cole say out loud that there was nothing left to be done, that her father was going to die no matter what happened next, shattered something inside her that she had been trying desperately to hold together.Patricia stood frozen near the bed, her face pale, her hands trembling slightly at her sides as she stared down at her grandfather's sunken face and listened to th
Chapter 8
Hearing what Bosworth Junior had just said, hearing him call Patricia's parents his future in-laws with that easy, confident smile still sitting on his face, Patricia's father could not help himself and started laughing, a warm, pleased laugh that made it clear he approved of everything Bosworth Junior represented, everything he had brought with him today, and everything he promised for the future. Then Bosworth Junior's eyes finally landed on Derek. He looked Derek up and down slowly, taking in the plain, worn clothing, the dust still clinging to his sleeves from the mountain road, the simple way he stood there without any jewelry, without any expensive accessories, without anything at all that suggested wealth or status or importance, and when Bosworth Junior spoke again, his voice carried just enough mockery to make sure everyone heard it."Who the hell is he?" he asked, gesturing toward Derek with one hand like he was pointing at something unpleasant he had found on the side of th
Chapter 7
Hearing what Derek had just said, Patricia's parents exchanged a quick glance, and the look that passed between them made it clear that neither of them believed a single word coming out of his mouth. They could not believe him, because none of it made sense to them. A man like Derek, someone with no family, no name, and no future, would never willingly walk away from a marriage arrangement that could have secured him a lifetime of comfort and protection. His entire bloodline had been wiped out more than fifteen years ago, his family name meant nothing to anyone anymore, and there was no one left in the world he could call his own. So if that was true, if he truly had nothing and no one, then why would he stand here and claim he wanted nothing from this marriage? What kind of man in his position would throw away the one chance he had to breathe a little easier? It did not add up, not in their minds.Patricia's mother was the first to speak, her arms crossing over her chest as she stud
Chapter 6
Not long after Derek left the mountain, he arrived in Blue Lake City, and the moment he stepped through the main road leading into the heart of the city, his eyes widened because everything had changed so much since the day he left fifteen years ago that he almost did not recognize the place anymore.Blue Lake had always been a decent city back then, a place where families lived comfortably and where merchants traded goods without too much trouble, but now it had become something else entirely, something far bigger and far more modern than Derek had ever imagined it could be.Everywhere he looked, there were tall skyscrapers made of glass and steel that stretched so high into the sky they seemed to touch the clouds, and the streets were filled with luxurious cars that moved smoothly along wide roads that had been paved perfectly without a single crack or bump. The buildings were clean and bright, their walls covered in advertisements and digital screens that flashed images and colors
Chapter 5
Sophia pressed her lips together. The argument was still sitting behind her teeth, fully formed, ready to come out, but even she knew there were lines on this mountain that no one crossed, and defying a direct order from Master Zachariah in his own house was one of them. The four of them went quiet.Derek looked at them once more — steady, honest then turned back toward the herbs still spread across the stone table."I have to pack," he said. "Sort the rest of those while I am gone. The ones on the left are still good. The ones on the right need drying again before you store them."His room in the stone dwelling was small the way every room on this mountain was small, not cramped, just honest about what a person actually needed. A sleeping mat rolled against the wall. A low wooden chest. A shelf of texts so old the pages had turned the color of aged teeth. He had lived in this room for fifteen years, and in those fifteen years he had never once felt it was too small for him.He pulled
Chapter 4
Madison stepped forward, her hands already clenched at her sides. “She is only a War Goddess Princess, yet she thinks she can treat Derek like this after her family agreed to the marriage?”“A mere Queen of War,” Savannah said with a cold laugh, her eyes burning with fury. “She sent a letter to cancel an agreement made by both families, and she believes she can insult him without facing the result?”Brooklyn’s face had turned red, and she looked more offended than Derek did. “I am going to find her.”“You are going to do what?” Derek asked.“I am leaving this mountain,” Brooklyn snapped. “I am going to find Patricia West, and I am going to teach her what happens when she looks down on you.”“I will go with you,” Savannah said at once. “If she wants to act like she is better than everyone else, I will bring her down myself.”Sophia’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the purple seal. “She should be grateful that Derek is not the kind of person who cares about such an insult, because if he
