The moment Derek saw the letters in the messenger’s hands, his eyes widened, because he had been waiting for one of them for many years, and although Master Zachariah had never told him the exact day it would arrive, Derek had always known that the old master would eventually send a message telling him to leave the mountain and return to the world below.
He had no idea who had sent the second letter.
Still, he stepped forward and accepted both letters from the messenger, then signed his name on the delivery record while keeping his eyes on the seals. The messenger did not stay to exchange greetings or ask questions, because anyone who traveled to the mountain understood that every extra moment spent there could become dangerous.
The mountain was not a place where ordinary messengers could travel.
Its paths changed after dark, wild animals, and beasts moved through the thick forest, and dangers hid beneath the trees, behind the rocks, and inside the deep fog that often covered the upper slopes. Only messengers chosen for the journey were allowed to come there, and only those who knew the safe path had any hope of returning.
As soon as Derek finished signing, the messenger bowed, turned around, and hurried away without wasting another second.
Derek watched him disappear between the trees before looking down at the two letters again.
One carried Master Zachariah’s seal.
The other carried a purple seal shaped like a crowned war goddess holding a sword.
The moment the four women saw the purple seal, their interest changed. The anger that had filled their faces only moments earlier faded into surprise, and all four of them moved closer to Derek without even realizing it.
They knew that seal, everyone in the country knew it.
The purple mark belonged to the Queen of War and was used by her family’s highest members, especially Patricia West, the War Goddess Princess of the West family. No one used that seal for an ordinary message, and no one received it without a serious reason being behind it.
Derek turned the letter over in his hand, broke the purple wax with his thumb, and unfolded the paper.
The room became quiet.
The four women watched his face as he began to read.
[ Derek,
As you know, our families made a marriage arrangement between the two of us many years ago. The agreement was signed by both families, sealed with our family marks, and supported by the approval of our elders.
However, many years have passed, and I have gone far beyond the person I was when this agreement was made. I am now the War Goddess Princess, and I have decided to end this marriage arrangement.
From this day forward, you are to stop telling people that we are betrothed. You are not to present yourself as my future husband, and you are not to claim that I am still promised to you.
This marriage, this betrothal, and every arrangement connected to it are cancelled from this moment onward.
Patricia West.]
Derek remained still after he finished reading.
His eyes stayed on the letter, but he no longer seemed to be looking at the words. He had known about the marriage arrangement. Master Zachariah had mentioned it several times over the years, and Derek had understood that his father had agreed to the marriage before his family was destroyed.
Even so, Derek had never expected Patricia to cancel it in such a cold and direct manner.
He had not expected her to send the message after fifteen years, as if the promise between their families had been nothing more than an old paper that could be thrown away when it became inconvenient.
Derek’s fingers tightened around the letter.
His family had once been powerful, respected, and feared, but that family no longer existed. His parents were dead. Every member of his bloodline had been murdered, and the name that had once opened doors now carried no strength because almost everyone believed that the entire family had vanished from the world.
Patricia had become a War Goddess Princess.
He was only the last survivor of a ruined family who had spent fifteen years hidden on a mountain.
There was no need for her to keep a marriage promise with someone who no longer had anything to offer her.
That was what this letter meant.
Derek slowly lowered the paper, and although his face remained calm, a dull ache settled inside his chest when he understood that Patricia no longer considered him relevant.
Before he could say anything, Sophia’s anger exploded.
“Who does that woman think she is?”

Hearing what Doctor Cole had just said, hearing him tell them that Old Master West was beyond saving, that no matter what anyone tried to do for him at this point he was going to die, Patricia's mother felt something inside her chest collapse, and the tears came before she could stop them, spilling down her cheeks as she turned and buried her face against her husband's shoulder, holding onto him so tightly her fingers went white against the fabric of his suit. She had not been ready for this. She had known her father was sick, had known his condition was serious, but hearing a doctor as skilled and as respected as Doctor Cole say out loud that there was nothing left to be done, that her father was going to die no matter what happened next, shattered something inside her that she had been trying desperately to hold together.Patricia stood frozen near the bed, her face pale, her hands trembling slightly at her sides as she stared down at her grandfather's sunken face and listened to th

Hearing what Bosworth Junior had just said, hearing him call Patricia's parents his future in-laws with that easy, confident smile still sitting on his face, Patricia's father could not help himself and started laughing, a warm, pleased laugh that made it clear he approved of everything Bosworth Junior represented, everything he had brought with him today, and everything he promised for the future. Then Bosworth Junior's eyes finally landed on Derek. He looked Derek up and down slowly, taking in the plain, worn clothing, the dust still clinging to his sleeves from the mountain road, the simple way he stood there without any jewelry, without any expensive accessories, without anything at all that suggested wealth or status or importance, and when Bosworth Junior spoke again, his voice carried just enough mockery to make sure everyone heard it."Who the hell is he?" he asked, gesturing toward Derek with one hand like he was pointing at something unpleasant he had found on the side of th
Chapter 7
Hearing what Derek had just said, Patricia's parents exchanged a quick glance, and the look that passed between them made it clear that neither of them believed a single word coming out of his mouth. They could not believe him, because none of it made sense to them. A man like Derek, someone with no family, no name, and no future, would never willingly walk away from a marriage arrangement that could have secured him a lifetime of comfort and protection. His entire bloodline had been wiped out more than fifteen years ago, his family name meant nothing to anyone anymore, and there was no one left in the world he could call his own. So if that was true, if he truly had nothing and no one, then why would he stand here and claim he wanted nothing from this marriage? What kind of man in his position would throw away the one chance he had to breathe a little easier? It did not add up, not in their minds.Patricia's mother was the first to speak, her arms crossing over her chest as she stud
Chapter 6
Not long after Derek left the mountain, he arrived in Blue Lake City, and the moment he stepped through the main road leading into the heart of the city, his eyes widened because everything had changed so much since the day he left fifteen years ago that he almost did not recognize the place anymore.Blue Lake had always been a decent city back then, a place where families lived comfortably and where merchants traded goods without too much trouble, but now it had become something else entirely, something far bigger and far more modern than Derek had ever imagined it could be.Everywhere he looked, there were tall skyscrapers made of glass and steel that stretched so high into the sky they seemed to touch the clouds, and the streets were filled with luxurious cars that moved smoothly along wide roads that had been paved perfectly without a single crack or bump. The buildings were clean and bright, their walls covered in advertisements and digital screens that flashed images and colors
Chapter 5
Sophia pressed her lips together. The argument was still sitting behind her teeth, fully formed, ready to come out, but even she knew there were lines on this mountain that no one crossed, and defying a direct order from Master Zachariah in his own house was one of them. The four of them went quiet.Derek looked at them once more — steady, honest then turned back toward the herbs still spread across the stone table."I have to pack," he said. "Sort the rest of those while I am gone. The ones on the left are still good. The ones on the right need drying again before you store them."His room in the stone dwelling was small the way every room on this mountain was small, not cramped, just honest about what a person actually needed. A sleeping mat rolled against the wall. A low wooden chest. A shelf of texts so old the pages had turned the color of aged teeth. He had lived in this room for fifteen years, and in those fifteen years he had never once felt it was too small for him.He pulled

Madison stepped forward, her hands already clenched at her sides. “She is only a War Goddess Princess, yet she thinks she can treat Derek like this after her family agreed to the marriage?”“A mere Queen of War,” Savannah said with a cold laugh, her eyes burning with fury. “She sent a letter to cancel an agreement made by both families, and she believes she can insult him without facing the result?”Brooklyn’s face had turned red, and she looked more offended than Derek did. “I am going to find her.”“You are going to do what?” Derek asked.“I am leaving this mountain,” Brooklyn snapped. “I am going to find Patricia West, and I am going to teach her what happens when she looks down on you.”“I will go with you,” Savannah said at once. “If she wants to act like she is better than everyone else, I will bring her down myself.”Sophia’s eyes narrowed as she stared at the purple seal. “She should be grateful that Derek is not the kind of person who cares about such an insult, because if he
