CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY
The mayor had Devin escorted to a private lounge upstairs in the mansion, one of those VIP-only spaces that were designed for extra special deals and handshakes that shaped cities and built legacies. The plush carpet soaked up the noise, the lighting was soft, and there was a private bartender standing silently near the corner. Mayor Richard County entered behind Devin with two aides trailing him like nervous men. They had seen the showdown and were afraid to do anything that could get them in Devin’s space. As soon as the door shut, Richard sighed and rubbed his head. “Wow, that was a big mess.” He muttered. Devin sat down slowly in the leather armchair, legs crossed, arms relaxed. He didn’t speak. He just watched and listened. “Listen, Mr Stone— Devin.” The mayor corrected himself quickly. “I want to sincerely apologize again. Dean Carson is a prick, we both know it, but this? Tonight he crossed the line, and I’m deeply sorry.” “I’ve dealt with worse, it’s alright now.”
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN
Devin stared at the man for a second. His thick red face and flailing hands made him look like a toddler throwing a tantrum in a tuxedo, and honestly, if Devin wasn't already irritated from earlier, he might've laughed at how stupid he looked. But now? He was done tolerating all this nonsense, especially in here. He was done pretending, done being polite, he was done being the calm one. Devin leaned forward slightly, his voice quiet but sharp enough to slice. "Touch me again, old man, and I swear to God, I'll shove that vodka tonic so far down your throat, you'll bottles for a week. Try me." The man's jaw dropped and his wife gasped in surprise. "How dare you threaten my husband, church rat?" "How dare you threaten me?" He hissed. "I'll ruin you! Do you know who I am?" Devin gave him a disgusted look. "Do you?" The man shook his head. "I am Dean Carson. Kneel down and apologise to me or else..." "Or else what? What can you do besides keep yourself upright? Yo
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN
Devin walked into the party, looking like a shadow in the middle of diamonds. He didn't care about any of that, but he would have felt much better if the interaction outside didn't happen. The ballroom was massive, and more impressive than the outside. Everywhere was glittering with gold walls, beautiful velvet curtains, crystal chandeliers that sparkled like gods had sneezed stars into the ceiling. You could tell that it wasn't the kind of money just anyone could buy. Rich laughter could be heard all over the place followed by the sight of impressively dressed men and women and the smell of expensive perfume mixed with large egos. Devin kept his cap low, and his hoodie zipped halfway, blending in with the servers. It was an intentional. He wanted to observe before he made an entrance there, and right now, the room was a perfect painting of power and pretense. And pleasure too. It seemed like a lot of people were enjoying themselves while others were merely boasting of their trait
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN
The mayor’s mansion was a large one that seemed to glow, even from the outside. Golden ornaments hung from trees, violins were being played from the large balconies, and the courtyard was full as the city’s most powerful people stood, dressed in designer gowns and custom tuxedos. It was the kind of night people posted about for months, the kind of party only an elite few could even dream of entering. And Devin Stone? He had walked up to it like it was any regular place. He didn’t want any attention and felt like he had been getting enough already, and so he didn’t take any flashy cars or an entourage. He was alone, and was dressed casually in just a simple dark hoodie, black jeans, a pair boots, a face cap, and his hands in his pockets. The rain earlier had soaked the hem of his pants, and his face was partially covered by the cap he wore. From a distance, he looked like a man who had taken a wrong turn into the wrong part of town. The bouncer at the front entrance, who was a
CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND SIXTEEN
The shopping mall Klaus picked wasn’t just high end, it was obnoxiously elite. The place was full of chandeliers, glass floors, heavy perfume scents, and workers who looked like they hadn’t blinked since their shift started. Amanda strutted through the entrance in designer sunglasses and a skin tight black dress that screamed. Klaus walked beside her in a navy suit with no tie, chewing gum and looking around like he owned the planet. “This place smells like desperation and overpriced lotion.” Amanda said, turning her nose up at the scent of vanilla and citrus. “It’s not desperation.” Klaus replied, barely glancing at the employees who’d stopped everything to bow their heads. “It’s fear. Fear that we’ll speak.” Amanda smirked. “As we should.” The first boutique they entered had a staff of five, all standing in a perfect line. A blonde salesgirl walked up with an overly fake smile. “Welcome to Odets, madam, sir. May I assist you with—” “No.” Amanda cut her off sharply
ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN
Amanda woke up in silk sheets. Yes, actual silk. The kind you’d find in movies or fashion magazines, the kind that she used to enjoy before her life turned to dust, costing way more than people’s rent. She stretched, smiling, and then turned to the side. A gold tray sat beside the bed, stacked with fresh strawberries, warm croissants, and a flute of champagne. A note lay beside the glass, folded neatly. She picked it up to read. -Join me on the terrace when you’re done. – K.- Amanda raised a brow. Klaus. She still didn’t know what his deal was. The man had picked her up from the street when she was done yelling for Devin like a stray dog, but instead of throwing her in a shelter, he brought her to this fucking palace. Who the hell was he even? And what did he want with her? She climbed out of bed and winced a little. Her body still ached, and not just from the rain. Her heart was raw, and her pride was still in pieces from everything that had taken place before then. But to
