Damien stood in the center of the Whitmore family's grand living room with his hands clasped together in front of him and his heart pounding so hard he could hear it in his ears.

He had been waiting for this day for three years now, three long years of sitting inside four walls while the world outside stayed frozen and deadly, three years of working himself to exhaustion every single night just so he could finally earn what they promised him when he first came to this house broken and desperate.

The fire ring.

That small piece of metal that would let him walk outside again without his lungs freezing in his chest, without his skin cracking open from the cold, without dying like so many others had died since the apocalypse came and turned the entire world into a frozen graveyard.

The frozen apocalypse had struck without warning five years ago and it swallowed cities whole, it killed billions in the first month alone, and if it were not for the top families who worked day and night to create the fire rings, if it were not for the power that got distributed to the top families so they could survive and rebuild, there would be nothing left of humanity at all.

But Damien had not been one of the lucky ones.

He did not awaken any power when the rings were first handed out, he did not get strength or speed or fire or ice like some people did, all he got was a little bit of intelligence, just enough to understand formulas and chemicals and how to mix things together in ways that other people could not figure out.

And that intelligence was the only reason he was still alive.

It was the only reason the Whitmore family let him stay in their house after his father froze to death in the first wave of the apocalypse and after his mother died two years later because they refused to give her a fire ring even though they had extras, even though they could have saved her, they chose to sell that ring to another wealthy family instead because it was worth more money that way.

Damien had been angry about that for a long time, he still was angry, but what could he do? He had no power, no money, no family left, and if he wanted to survive he had to swallow that anger and keep working for them because they were the only ones who could give him what he needed.

And now after three years of staying inside their house like a prisoner, after three years of barely seeing outside, after three years of mixing chemicals and testing formulas and working until his hands shook, today was finally the day.

Today they were going to give him his fire ring.

Damien looked across the room at his wife's father, Richard Whitmore, a tall man with graying hair and a sharp suit who stood near the fireplace with his arms crossed and his eyes on Damien like he was studying something small and unimportant.

Richard's wife Margaret stood beside him with her hands folded neatly in front of her and a thin smile on her face that did not reach her eyes.

And then there was Clara.

Damien's wife.

She stood off to the side near the window with her phone in her hand and her blonde hair pulled back into a perfect ponytail, she looked calm, she looked beautiful, she looked like she always did, like nothing in the world could ever bother her.

Damien tried to catch her eye but she was staring down at her phone screen and tapping something with her thumb.

Richard cleared his throat and Damien's attention snapped back to him immediately.

"So Damien," Richard said slowly, his voice smooth and measured like he was talking to a child. "It seems you are very eager to get your ring now."

Damien nodded quickly, too quickly maybe, but he could not help it. "Yes sir, I have been waiting for this, I have worked hard for this, I did everything you asked me to do."

Richard smiled slightly. "You did, you worked very hard, I will give you that."

Damien felt his chest tighten with hope, he could almost feel the weight of the ring already, he could already imagine walking outside again and breathing cold air without it killing him, he could imagine going somewhere, anywhere, just to feel like a person again instead of a tool locked inside a house.

But then Clara's phone buzzed.

The sound was loud in the quiet room and everyone turned to look at her.

Clara's eyes went wide as she stared down at the screen, her lips parted slightly and then she looked up at her father with something bright and sharp in her expression. "Dad, it worked."

Richard straightened immediately. "The drug?"

"Yes," Clara said, her voice rising with excitement now. "The results just came in, the drug passed every single test, they are calling it a complete success, they said it is the first of its kind and it is going to prevent ice frost completely, not just reduce it, completely."

Margaret gasped and put a hand over her mouth. "Oh my God."

Richard's face split into a wide grin and he let out a short laugh. "Do you know what this means?"

"We are going to be worth trillions," Clara said, her eyes gleaming. "Not millions, not billions, trillions, this is the only drug in the world that can stop ice frost and we own it."

At that exact moment, Damien felt his entire body go rigid with shock, and it was not the shock of receiving another system mission that froze him in place, it was the single word attached to that mission, a name that struck something deep and painful inside him the second it registered in his mind.Whitmore.That name alone was enough to send a cold shiver crawling up his spine, a name he had never once expected to hear again so soon, a name that belonged to the very family who had destroyed everything he once loved in the life he had already lived through. Clara, his wife in that frozen future, the woman who stood over him with a bat in her hands and broke every bone in his body without a flicker of guilt on her face, her family name had been Whitmore. That could only mean one thing, and the realization hit him like a punch to the gut, this woman lying on the ground bleeding out in front of him, this Megan Whitmore, had to be connected somehow to that same bloodline, to that same r

At that moment, Damien could not stop himself from smiling. The smile slowly spread across his face, deep and full of hope, because one thing was clear in his mind now: he was not going to make the same mistake again. He would not trust the Whitmore family. He would not wait for someone else to save him.He would not waste the second chance he had been given. Before he could say anything else, another notification appeared in front of him, and the system screen that had been floating in the air suddenly changed.[SYSTEM MISSION COUNTDOWN ACTIVATED.][TIME REMAINING BEFORE THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION IS RELEASED: 01:00:00.][THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION WILL BE ACTIVATED IN ONE HOUR.]Damien stared at the countdown as the numbers began to move.[00:59:59.]His heart started beating faster. He had one hour before the system gave him his first mission, one hour before he found out what he needed to do to begin gaining experience, system points, and rewards, and even though he had no idea what k

At that moment Damien stared at the notification without blinking.Another line of text appeared beneath it.[STARTER ATTRIBUTES HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED.][1. UNLIMITED SYSTEM STORAGE.][2. UNLIMITED SYSTEM FARMLAND.][3. SYSTEM TIME DIFFERENCE.][ONE MINUTE INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS ONE DAY OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]Damien's eyes widened as he read the next line.[ONE HOUR INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS SIXTY DAYS OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]He quickly began calculating in his head. One day inside the system had twenty-four hours, and every hour held sixty minutes, which meant one day inside the system contained one thousand four hundred and forty minutes. If one thousand four hundred and forty days in the system world would equal one day in real words That was almost four years in the system word.Damien's lips slowly parted. He had sixty days before the apocalypse, but inside the system, he could spend over 240 years and still gain the same amount of outside time before the disaster arrived. With that mu

The moment Damien heard his mother’s voice and saw her standing alive in front of him, he could no longer control himself. He rushed forward and pulled her into his arms. His movement was so sudden that his mother stumbled back, her eyes widening as she stared at him in complete shock, but Damien held her tightly against his chest as though she might disappear the moment he let go.For two years, he had watched her suffer. For two years, he had listened to her weak breathing and seen the cold slowly take her life while the Whitmore family kept the fire ring that could have saved her.For two years, he had blamed himself for not being able to protect her.Now she was standing in front of him again, warm, healthy, and confused, and Damien could not stop the tears from filling his eyes."What the hell is going on?" his mother asked, her voice filled with worry. "Why are you doing this? Damien, are you okay? What happened to you?"Damien did not answer her.He only held her tighter while

Damien lay there in the frozen pit with his broken body sinking deeper into the ice and garbage, with the cold wrapping tighter around his chest like invisible hands squeezing the last bits of warmth out of him, and somewhere in the fog of pain and exhaustion his mind started drifting toward his mother."I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice so weak it barely made a sound, so thin it almost disappeared into the frozen air around him. "I'm so sorry, Mother, I failed you."The words came out broken and slow because his throat was closing up from the cold, because his lungs were struggling to pull in air, because every part of him was shutting down piece by piece."I failed you," he said again, and tears started sliding down his frozen cheeks. "I was so foolish, I believed them, I believed every single word those good-for-nothing bastards told me, I thought if I just worked hard enough, if I just did what they asked, they would keep their promise, they would give me the ring, they would le

Then she moved to his left arm and did the same thing.Damien lay on the floor with both legs broken and both arms broken and blood pouring from his mouth and his nose and cuts all over his face, he could not move, he could barely breathe, every inch of him was on fire with pain so intense that his body kept trying to shut down just to escape it.Clara handed the bat back to the guard and smoothed her dress with both hands like she had just finished something ordinary."Good," she said quietly. "Now I can forgive you for wasting my time."Damien stared at her through the haze of pain and shock and he could not believe this was real, could not believe this was the woman he had been married to for four years, the woman he thought he knew. How did he let them trick him like this? How did he not see it coming? He was so angry, so devastated, so destroyed that he could not even form words anymore, all he could do was lie there and shake and bleed and wait for whatever came next.Richard lo
