Damien stood there listening to them talk and for a moment he felt a strange kind of pride swell up in his chest because he was the one who made that drug, he spent three years locked in a basement lab mixing chemicals and running tests and failing over and over again until he finally figured it out.
He did that. And now the Whitmore family was going to be one of the richest families in the entire world because of him. Damien looked at Clara and smiled. "I am glad it worked." Clara glanced at him for half a second and then looked back at her father without saying anything. That was when the door opened. Everyone turned toward the sound and a man walked into the room like he owned it. He was tall, maybe six foot two, with dark hair slicked back and a suit that probably cost more than Damien had earned in his entire life, his face was handsome in a cold sharp way and his eyes swept over the room with the kind of confidence that only came from being born into money. Julian Crane. Damien recognized him immediately because everyone knew who Julian Crane was, his family owned the largest pharmaceutical company in the world, even after the apocalypse they still controlled most of the drug production and distribution across every remaining city. Richard's entire face lit up when he saw Julian and he walked over quickly with his hand extended. "Julian, I was not expecting you tonight." Julian shook his hand firmly and smiled. "I heard some very interesting news about a breakthrough drug and I wanted to come see for myself." "You heard correctly," Richard said, still grinning. "We just got confirmation, the drug is a complete success." "Congratulations," Julian said smoothly, and then his eyes moved to Clara. "And congratulations to you as well Clara, your father tells me you have been overseeing this project personally." Clara smiled at him in a way that made Damien's stomach twist. "Thank you Julian, it has been a long process but it was worth it." "I am sure it was," Julian said, and then he looked at Margaret and greeted her politely as well. However no one looked at Damien. It was like he was not even there. Damien stood in the middle of the room with his hands still clasped in front of him and his heart starting to beat faster now for a different reason. Something was wrong, he could feel it. Richard and Julian started talking about distribution deals and patents and profit margins, Margaret was nodding along and smiling, Clara was standing close to Julian now with her arms crossed and her head tilted slightly like she was listening to something fascinating. And no one said a single word to Damien. At that moment he cleared his throat. "Excuse me." No one turned. He spoke louder. "Excuse me, I—" "Damien," Richard said without looking at him. "We are in the middle of something important." "I know, but I just wanted to ask about—" That was when something hit him hard in the back. Damien's knees buckled and he fell forward onto the floor with his hands barely catching himself before his face hit the ground, pain exploded across his spine and he gasped and tried to turn his head to see what happened. One of Richard's security guards was standing behind him, a huge man with no expression on his face and his fist still raised. Damien tried to push himself up but another guard grabbed him by the shoulder and slammed him back down onto the floor, his cheek pressed against the cold wood and his vision blurred for a second. "What the hell is going on?" Damien choked out, his voice shaking now. Richard turned to look at him finally, and the smile was gone from his face, now he just looked annoyed. "Did you really think we were going to give you a ring Damien?" Damien stared at him. "You promised." "We promised you a roof over your head," Richard said. "We promised you food, we promised you a lab to work in, and we gave you all of that, we kept our end of the deal." "You said after three years—" "After three years we would consider it," Margaret cut in, her voice sharp now. "We never promised anything." Damien's chest tightened and he tried to push himself up again but the guard's hand was like iron on his back. "I worked for you, I gave you everything, I made that drug, I spent three years locked in this house for you." "And we appreciate that," Richard said. "But let's be honest Damien, you did not do it for us, you did it because you had no other choice, you had nowhere else to go, no one else would take you in, and if we had not let you stay here you would have frozen to death in the streets like your mother did." The words hit Damien like a punch to the gut. "You could have saved her," Damien said, his voice breaking now. "You had an extra ring, you could have given it to her, but you sold it instead, you sold it to the Harrington family for three million dollars." "It was a business decision," Richard said simply. "She was dying." "A lot of people were dying," Margaret said. "We cannot save everyone Damien."Latest Chapter
Chapter 10
At that exact moment, Damien felt his entire body go rigid with shock, and it was not the shock of receiving another system mission that froze him in place, it was the single word attached to that mission, a name that struck something deep and painful inside him the second it registered in his mind.Whitmore.That name alone was enough to send a cold shiver crawling up his spine, a name he had never once expected to hear again so soon, a name that belonged to the very family who had destroyed everything he once loved in the life he had already lived through. Clara, his wife in that frozen future, the woman who stood over him with a bat in her hands and broke every bone in his body without a flicker of guilt on her face, her family name had been Whitmore. That could only mean one thing, and the realization hit him like a punch to the gut, this woman lying on the ground bleeding out in front of him, this Megan Whitmore, had to be connected somehow to that same bloodline, to that same r

At that moment, Damien could not stop himself from smiling. The smile slowly spread across his face, deep and full of hope, because one thing was clear in his mind now: he was not going to make the same mistake again. He would not trust the Whitmore family. He would not wait for someone else to save him.He would not waste the second chance he had been given. Before he could say anything else, another notification appeared in front of him, and the system screen that had been floating in the air suddenly changed.[SYSTEM MISSION COUNTDOWN ACTIVATED.][TIME REMAINING BEFORE THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION IS RELEASED: 01:00:00.][THE FIRST SYSTEM MISSION WILL BE ACTIVATED IN ONE HOUR.]Damien stared at the countdown as the numbers began to move.[00:59:59.]His heart started beating faster. He had one hour before the system gave him his first mission, one hour before he found out what he needed to do to begin gaining experience, system points, and rewards, and even though he had no idea what k

At that moment Damien stared at the notification without blinking.Another line of text appeared beneath it.[STARTER ATTRIBUTES HAVE BEEN UNLOCKED.][1. UNLIMITED SYSTEM STORAGE.][2. UNLIMITED SYSTEM FARMLAND.][3. SYSTEM TIME DIFFERENCE.][ONE MINUTE INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS ONE DAY OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]Damien's eyes widened as he read the next line.[ONE HOUR INSIDE THE SYSTEM EQUALS SIXTY DAYS OUTSIDE THE SYSTEM.]He quickly began calculating in his head. One day inside the system had twenty-four hours, and every hour held sixty minutes, which meant one day inside the system contained one thousand four hundred and forty minutes. If one thousand four hundred and forty days in the system world would equal one day in real words That was almost four years in the system word.Damien's lips slowly parted. He had sixty days before the apocalypse, but inside the system, he could spend over 240 years and still gain the same amount of outside time before the disaster arrived. With that mu

The moment Damien heard his mother’s voice and saw her standing alive in front of him, he could no longer control himself. He rushed forward and pulled her into his arms. His movement was so sudden that his mother stumbled back, her eyes widening as she stared at him in complete shock, but Damien held her tightly against his chest as though she might disappear the moment he let go.For two years, he had watched her suffer. For two years, he had listened to her weak breathing and seen the cold slowly take her life while the Whitmore family kept the fire ring that could have saved her.For two years, he had blamed himself for not being able to protect her.Now she was standing in front of him again, warm, healthy, and confused, and Damien could not stop the tears from filling his eyes."What the hell is going on?" his mother asked, her voice filled with worry. "Why are you doing this? Damien, are you okay? What happened to you?"Damien did not answer her.He only held her tighter while
Chapter 6
Damien lay there in the frozen pit with his broken body sinking deeper into the ice and garbage, with the cold wrapping tighter around his chest like invisible hands squeezing the last bits of warmth out of him, and somewhere in the fog of pain and exhaustion his mind started drifting toward his mother."I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice so weak it barely made a sound, so thin it almost disappeared into the frozen air around him. "I'm so sorry, Mother, I failed you."The words came out broken and slow because his throat was closing up from the cold, because his lungs were struggling to pull in air, because every part of him was shutting down piece by piece."I failed you," he said again, and tears started sliding down his frozen cheeks. "I was so foolish, I believed them, I believed every single word those good-for-nothing bastards told me, I thought if I just worked hard enough, if I just did what they asked, they would keep their promise, they would give me the ring, they would le

Then she moved to his left arm and did the same thing.Damien lay on the floor with both legs broken and both arms broken and blood pouring from his mouth and his nose and cuts all over his face, he could not move, he could barely breathe, every inch of him was on fire with pain so intense that his body kept trying to shut down just to escape it.Clara handed the bat back to the guard and smoothed her dress with both hands like she had just finished something ordinary."Good," she said quietly. "Now I can forgive you for wasting my time."Damien stared at her through the haze of pain and shock and he could not believe this was real, could not believe this was the woman he had been married to for four years, the woman he thought he knew. How did he let them trick him like this? How did he not see it coming? He was so angry, so devastated, so destroyed that he could not even form words anymore, all he could do was lie there and shake and bleed and wait for whatever came next.Richard lo
