Chapter 26

Rain lashed against the reinforced glass of the Apex Estate. The storm had rolled in off the coast just after sunset, drowning Valmont City in sheets of gray water and rolling thunder.

Inside the subterranean vault, the atmosphere was entirely electric.

Nyx sat cross-legged on the steel command desk. The flash drive Victoria Sterling had delivered was plugged into her primary terminal. Massive holographic screens floated in the air around her, projecting rotating 3D models of heavily armed tactical operatives and pages of redacted military records.

"She wasn't lying, boss," Nyx said, her neon-green eyes reflecting the scrolling data. "The Vanguard Council didn't just authorize a hit. They authorized a localized war. They're sending a black-ops unit known as 'The Hounds.'"

Serena stood by the wall, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. "I've heard whispers about them in the Capital. Julian used to brag about them when he was drunk. They aren't mercenaries. They’re ghosts. They make entire rival families vanish in their sleep."

Arthur leaned against the heavy biometric vault door, sipping a glass of iced water. "Define ghosts."

Nyx flicked a finger through the air, expanding a holographic personnel file. "Thermal camouflage. Radar-absorbent armor. Sub-sonic weaponry. There are twelve of them. They move in total silence, cut the power grid, and wipe the target before local law enforcement even knows a breach happened."

"When?" Arthur asked.

"Judging by the deployment codes hidden in this drive?" Nyx popped a bubble. "Tonight. Probably between midnight and 3:00 AM."

Arthur set his glass down. He pulled up his internal System interface.

[Current System Points: 10,000 SP.]

[Threat Level Escalation Detected: The Hounds (Tier-2 Strike Team).]

Ten thousand points wasn't enough to summon another Vanguard. It wasn't enough to buy an invincible private army. But Arthur didn't need an army. He had a fortress, a hacker who could bend digital reality, an assassin who defied physics, and his own Grandmaster-tier fists.

"System," Arthur thought. "I need an environmental advantage. What can I buy for the estate?"

[Accessing Architectural Upgrades...]

[Target Asset: The Apex Estate.]

[Purchase: 'Absolute Domain' Defense Grid. Cost: 8,000 SP.]

[Description: Installs un-hackable, localized AI defense protocols, interior lockdown bulkheads, and suppresses all foreign thermal/radar imaging within a one-mile radius.]

Purchase.

[8,000 SP Deducted. Remaining: 2,000 SP.]

[Integration complete. The Apex Estate is now an Absolute Domain.]

Arthur felt a subtle shift in the air pressure of the vault. The ambient hum of the house's electricity changed pitch, deepening into a low, predatory vibration.

"Nyx," Arthur said. "Can you link into the new defense grid?"

Nyx blinked, her eyes widening as her bio-digital interface automatically connected to the house. She let out a low whistle. "Whoa. Boss, where did you hide this hardware? The firewalls on this house just upgraded to something that looks extraterrestrial. I have total control over every door, camera, and light bulb."

"Good," Arthur smiled darkly. "Serena. Stay in the vault. Do not open the door unless you hear my voice."

"What are you going to do?" Serena asked, her voice tight with genuine fear.

"I'm going to take the dogs for a walk," Arthur replied.

He unbuttoned his suit jacket, tossing it onto the leather sofa. He rolled up the sleeves of his crisp white dress shirt, exposing his forearms. He looked at Vera.

The white-haired assassin was standing perfectly still, polishing the obsidian-black steel of her combat blade with a velvet cloth. Her crimson eyes locked onto Arthur's. She didn't need orders. She knew exactly what was required.

BOOM.

A deafening crack of thunder shook the foundation of the estate.

At that exact second, the brilliant lights of the Apex Estate died.

The massive holographic screens in the vault vanished. The hum of the air conditioning ceased. Total, suffocating darkness swallowed the room.

"Power grid is down," Nyx's voice echoed in the pitch black, though she sounded entirely unbothered. "They severed the main city line at the base of Sovereign Hill. Backup generators have been physically jammed."

Arthur’s eyes adjusted instantly. His Advanced Cognitive Processing mapped the dark room flawlessly.

"They think darkness is their ally," Arthur whispered, rolling his neck until the vertebrae popped loudly. "Nyx. Lock the exterior bulkheads. Don't let them out."

"Locking them in. Have fun, boss."

Arthur and Vera stepped out of the vault and into the pitch-black hallways of the sprawling mansion. The hunt had begun.

Chapter 57The frozen moment in time shattered. The roaring wind returned with a vengeance. The dying Harvester monolith crashed into the Mediterranean Sea ten miles offshore, sending a massive, three-hundred-foot tidal wave racing toward the island of San Marcos.Arthur didn't even look at the incoming tsunami. He tossed the fading, useless shaft of the Spear of Genesis aside. The magnetic casing dissolved into violet dust before it hit the marble balcony."Vera! Hyperion!" Arthur shouted. Before the tidal wave could strike the newly rebuilt capital, Hyperion shot down from the stratosphere. The plasma-wrapped Vanguard positioned himself directly between the city and the ocean. He didn't build a wall; he simply unleashed a localized burst of thermal radiation. The three-hundred-foot wall of seawater slammed into the thermal barrier and instantly flash-boiled into steam. It looked like a jagged wound in reality, bleeding a deep, terrifying violet light. From the rift, the weapon descended. It wasn't a gun. It didn't have a trigger or a stock. It was a six-foot-long javelin composed entirely of condensed, swirling anti-matter encased in a shifting magnetic field. It hummed with a low, bone-rattling frequency that made the hair on everyone’s arms stand on end.Arthur stepped forward and reached out."Master, do not touch it!" Vera warned, taking a rare step backward, her instincts screaming that the weapon was anathema to biological life.Arthur ignored her. He folded his silver-armored arms across his chest and plummeted directly toward the pitch-black surface of the alien ship.As he fell, Hyperion channeled the raw thermal energy of the upper atmosphere, turning himself into a localized, artificial sun. The heat radiating off his body spiked to ten thousand degrees. He slammed into the top of the Harvester vessel. The impact should have melted the alien hull instantly. Instead, a shockwave of blinding white steam erupted across the sky. The alien monolith wasn’t just armored; its hull was maintained at absolute zero. The ship was constructed from self-repairing dark matter and propelled by a frictionless gravity drive. It descended through the pitch-black water at terrifying speeds.Ares stood like a monolith at the back of the bridge, his red optics cutting through the dim cabin lighting. Nemesis hovered near the navigation console, her shadow-wrapped form completely unbothered by the crushing depths outside the viewport. Vera stood directly beside Arthur, her hand resting on her combat blade out of pure habit."Depth: thirty-five thousand feet," the ship’s automated AI reported in a smooth, synthetic voic
