Chapter 25

The silence in the staging area wasn't empty. It felt pressurized, like the air inside a submarine descending too fast.

Serena blinked, her mind struggling to process the aristocratic woman standing before them. "A ring?" she repeated, the words tasting ridiculous on her tongue. "You just watched him mentally dismantle your nephew on national television, and you want to propose?"

Victoria Sterling didn't even look at Serena. Her shattered-ice eyes remained locked entirely on Arthur.

"My nephew," Victoria purred, peeling off her black leather gloves finger by finger, "is an arrogant, bloated disappointment. He inherited his father's temper and none of my intellect. The Sterling name was starting to rot because of him. You just did me a favor by cutting out the infection."

Arthur didn't move. He let his Eye of Insight run its scan. The glowing blue text hovered transparently next to Victoria’s face.

[Target: Victoria Sterling]

[Loyalty: 0%. Ambition: 100%.]

[Hidden Objective: The Vanguard Council is ruled by four aging patriarchs. She plans to use your infinite capital to orchestrate a hostile takeover of her own syndicate, crowning herself the absolute monarch of the Capital City.]

Arthur let out a low, vibrating chuckle. The sound made Victoria’s perfectly sculpted eyebrows twitch in mild surprise.

"You don't want a marriage, Victoria," Arthur said smoothly. He shoved his hands into his trouser pockets, projecting an aura of complete, unbothered dominance. "You want a battering ram. You looked at my bank accounts and saw a weapon big enough to smash the old men sitting at the head of your Council's table."

For the first time, the Queen of Diamonds looked genuinely caught off guard. A flicker of something dangerous and intensely attracted flared in her eyes.

"You are much sharper than your file suggests," she whispered, taking a slow step closer. The scent of winter pine and expensive musk wrapped around him. "The Vanguard Council voted an hour ago, Arthur. Because you humiliated Silas on that stage, they declared Vance Corp a Tier-One threat. They are going to mobilize the full weight of the Capital’s underworld to erase you."

She stopped barely a foot away, tilting her chin up to meet his gaze. "Marry me. Merge Vance Corp with my private treasury. With my political cover and your impossible wealth, the Council won't dare touch us. We can rule the East Coast."

From the shadows, Vera’s hand tightened around the hilt of her blade. The leather of her gloves creaked softly. She was waiting for a single nod from Arthur to sever this woman's head from her shoulders.

Arthur looked down at Victoria. She was beautiful, terrifying, and brilliant. Before the System, a woman like this wouldn't have spared him a glance if he were on fire. Now, she was offering him the world.

"I don't do partnerships," Arthur said. The temperature in his voice dropped to absolute zero.

Victoria frowned. "Excuse me?"

"When I want something, I buy it," Arthur stated, stepping into her space, forcing her to instinctively take a half-step backward. His Aura of the Sovereign bore down on her, heavy and suffocating. "I don't share equity. I don't merge. If you want to survive the war that's coming to your Capital, Victoria... you don't marry me. You work for me."

Serena inhaled sharply. Nyx stopped chewing her gum.

Victoria stared at him. A furious, humiliated blush crept up her pale neck, warring with a deep, twisted sense of fascination. Nobody spoke to her like this. Men begged her. Men died for her.

Slowly, the anger faded, replaced by a razor-thin smile.

"You are either a god, Arthur Vance, or the most arrogant corpse in Valmont City," she breathed out. She reached inside her trench coat and pulled out a heavy, matte-black envelope. She slid it smoothly into the breast pocket of Arthur’s suit jacket, letting her fingers linger against his chest for a fraction of a second.

"The Vanguard Council isn't sending thugs tonight," Victoria whispered. "They unlocked the kennels. Consider this a gesture of goodwill. If you survive until morning... I might just take you up on that job offer."

She turned on her stiletto heels, her black coat swishing dramatically, and walked out the heavy steel doors.

Arthur pulled the black envelope from his pocket. He didn't open it. He handed it backward without looking.

Nyx snatched it out of his hand. She ripped the paper open, pulling out a sleek metallic flash drive.

"Let's go home," Arthur commanded, adjusting his cuffs. "We have pests to exterminate."

The dying Harvester monolith crashed into the Mediterranean Sea ten miles offshore, sending a massive, three-hundred-foot tidal wave racing toward the island of San Marcos.Arthur didn't even look at the incoming tsunami. He tossed the fading, useless shaft of the Spear of Genesis aside. The magnetic casing dissolved into violet dust before it hit the marble balcony."Vera! Hyperion!" Arthur shouted. Before the tidal wave could strike the newly rebuilt capital, Hyperion shot down from the stratosphere. The plasma-wrapped Vanguard positioned himself directly between the city and the ocean. He didn't build a wall; he simply unleashed a localized burst of thermal radiation. The three-hundred-foot wall of seawater slammed into the thermal barrier and instantly flash-boiled into steam. It looked like a jagged wound in reality, bleeding a deep, terrifying violet light. From the rift, the weapon descended. It wasn't a gun. It didn't have a trigger or a stock. It was a six-foot-long javelin composed entirely of condensed, swirling anti-matter encased in a shifting magnetic field. It hummed with a low, bone-rattling frequency that made the hair on everyone’s arms stand on end.Arthur stepped forward and reached out."Master, do not touch it!" Vera warned, taking a rare step backward, her instincts screaming that the weapon was anathema to biological life.Arthur ignored her. The heat radiating off his body spiked to ten thousand degrees. He slammed into the top of the Harvester vessel. The impact should have melted the alien hull instantly. It was a lightless, frozen void where human ambition went to die.Arthur Vance wasn’t human anymore. He stood on the bridge of the Abyssal Leviathan, a deep-sea exploration vessel he had purchased from the Level 5 System Store for an effortless half-million SP. The ship was constructed from self-repairing dark matter and propelled by a frictionless gravity drive. It descended through the pitch-black water at terrifying speeds.Ares stood like a monolith at the back of the bridge, his red optics cutting through the dim cabin lighting. Nemesis hovered near the navigation console, her shadow-wrapped form completely unbothered by the crushing depths outside the viewport. Vera stood directly beside Arthur, her hand resting on her combat blade out of pure habit."Depth: thirty-five thousand feet," the ship’s automated AI reported in a smooth, synthetic voic
