Beside her was her mother, Clara Lang, looking equally out of place and equally smug.

The remaining mourners stopped. The atmosphere shifted from somber grief to confused tension.

“Vanessa?” Adrian stepped in front of Helen, his body going rigid. “What are you doing here? This is a funeral. You weren’t at the church!”

Vanessa smiled. It was a cold, practiced smile. She walked right up to the edge of the grave, looked down at the dirt, and shrugged.

“Tragic,” she drawled. “Truly. But business doesn’t stop for the dead, Adrian. You should know that. You bought a bank while my marriage was dying.”

“Get out,” Adrian said, his voice low and vibrating with a threat. “Leave. Now.”

“I’m afraid I can’t do that,” Vanessa said. She snapped her fingers.

One of the grey-suited men stepped forward. He pulled a thick stack of documents from his briefcase. They were bound in blue legal covers.

“Adrian West?” the lawyer asked, his voice monotone.

“What is this?” Adrian demanded, ignoring the paper thr

Exhibit A: The Snake in the GardenThe laughter from the prosecution table died down into a series of condescending smirks. Marcus Thorne leaned back, whispering something to his junior associate that made them both chuckle. They treated Adrian’s motion for disbarment like a toddler threatening to hold his breath.“Mr. West,” Judge Sterling said, her voice steadying but still laced with caution. “You cannot simply move for disbarment and summary judgment in an opening statement. You must present evidence. Do you have evidence?”“I do,” Adrian replied.“Then present it.”Adrian picked up the remote control for the courtroom’s digital display system.“I call the court’s attention to Exhibit A,” Adrian said. The large screen on the wall flickered to life.Ethan checked his watch, bored. “What is he going to show us? A picture of his burnt toast?”The screen didn't show toast. It showed a bank statement. But not just any bank statement. It was a routing sheet from an offshore account in t

The silence that followed this time wasn't confused. It was stunned. And then, the laughter exploded. It was raucous. It was hysterical. Even the bailiff cracked a smile.“Doom?” Ethan cackled, slapping the table. “He calls himself Doom! Oh my god, he’s lost his mind. The bullet must have hit his brain. He thinks he’s a comic book character!”Marcus Thorne was shaking with laughter. “Your Honor, please. This is a mental health crisis. We need a psychiatric evaluation, not a hearing.”Vanessa covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking. She thought he had finally snapped.Judge Sterling banged her gavel furiously. BANG! BANG! BANG!“Silence! Absolute silence or I will clear this courtroom!”She glared at Adrian, her face red with irritation.“Mr. West,” she hissed. “This is a court of law, not a stage for your delusions. ‘Doom’ is not a name. It is a word. You are wasting my time.”“Expatriate,” Judge Sterling commanded. “Explain yourself immediately before I have you removed.”Adrian did

The courtroom was packed. Every bench in the gallery was filled with reporters, bloggers, and members of the New York elite who treated custody battles like spectator sports. The air was thick with the scent of old mahogany, floor wax, and expensive cologne.Ethan led Vanessa to the plaintiff's table. They sat down, flanking Clara.Spread out before them was the "Firing Squad." Five lawyers in matching grey suits, sorting through mountains of paperwork, tapping on tablets, looking bored and lethal. They whispered to each other in legal jargon that sounded like spells.“Impressive,” Clara murmured, eyeing the team. “This looks like a coronation.”Vanessa looked across the aisle looking pale but composed in a modest navy dress chosen specifically to make her look like a grieving, concerned mother. Next to her was Clara, nursing her bruised cheek, her eyes darting around like a cornered rat.On the right side —the defense table— it was empty.Completely, utterly empty. The gallery was pa

“...and if you are just joining us, the atmosphere here at the New York Supreme Court is nothing short of electric. It is a circus, a gladiator arena, and a corporate merger all rolled into one.”The news reporter, a blonde woman in a trench coat fighting against the wind, pressed her earpiece as she spoke into the camera. Behind her, the marble steps of the courthouse were swarming with paparazzi, protestors, and curious onlookers.“We are moments away from the most high-profile custody hearing of the decade. On one side, we have Vanessa Lang, CEO of Lang Enterprises, who has had a tumultuous forty-eight hours. Sources confirm that just last night, Ms. Lang was involved in a high-stakes police operation to rescue her brother, Lucas Lang, from a kidnapping attempt that allegedly drained her company’s liquid assets.”The cameraman panned to the sleek black SUVs lined up at the curb.“And on the other side... the enigma. "Sir, the bill is only sixteen thousand. This is... is this a joke?""I'm not paying the bill," Adrian said, capping the pen. "I'm buying the goddamn hospital."The lobby went dead silent."Excuse me?" Dr. Aris squeaked."I don't like your policy," Adrian said, stepping around him. "So I'm changing management. Consider the hospital acquired. The elevator doors opened into the lobby, but Vanessa couldn't move. She stood paralyzed, her mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.“He… he…” Vanessa stammered.“He robbed you,” Ethan said coldly, handing the phone back. “Your fiancé. The ‘millionaire.’ He cleaned you out.”“No,” Vanessa whispered. “No, Bobby loves me. He… he helped me plan everything. He hates Adrian!”“He played you,” Ethan scoffed, stepping out of the elevator. “He saw a desperate, greedy woman, and he milked her dry. The safe? The bonds? Vanessa, if he took the corporate emergency funds… you’re bankrupt.”The realization hit her like a physical blow. The cash reserves for the hostile takeover of Crestmoor? Gone. The jewelry she had inherited? Gone. The deeds to the Lang properties? Gone. And Lucas. Her annoying, spoiled, only brother.
