Alex could tell that he wasn’t welcome there, and hearing about Matthew Pietersen had triggered the chief, making the situation far worse than before.

But Alex convinced himself that he could set things right again if only he could win their trust.

“I see we have started off on the wrong foot,” he said, lowering his gaze out of respect. “Allow me to apologize for my actions. I didn’t mean to offend you, chief.”

Holata, however, wasn’t in any mood to tide things over.

“I am not falling for your smooth words. We all know you hold daggers behind your back. Daggers meant to strike when we let our guard down!” he snapped, spitting to show his contempt. “Get out of my land before I water the grass with your blood!”

“I am not going anywhere until you give me ten minutes of your time,” Alex replied adamantly. “We both could benefit from—”

Holata pulled the hammer back and took a step forward. “One! Two!” he began counting, shouting the numbers louder than gunshots. “Three…four…”
