After a great deal of contemplation, Alex finally decided to take his chances.
“Alright, I will treat your father,” he said, much to the caller’s relief.
“Thank the heavens!” the voice on the other end exclaimed, exhaling the anxious breath he had been holding for so long. “You will be adequately compensated, Mr. Verlaine. I promise you that.”
Alex, however, had no interest in the man’s money. All he wanted to know was his real identity and how someone like him had managed to obtain his number.
“Before I decide to visit your father, I need to know who I’m talking to and just how you got hold of my number.”
“My name is Josiah Warrington. I’m the only male heir of the Warrington bloodline. We are an A-tier family based in the provincial capital of Lichtenstein,” the voice from the other end revealed. “My friends at the City Council helped me track down your number. They said you were the only one who could help us.”
Even after hearing everything, Alex couldn’t recognize the family as they were far too insignificant for his former self to care about. For now, all he understood from the caller’s replies was that they were desperate to get him to treat their family head.
Alex listened to everything carefully and asked for the address. “I’ll visit the patient soon. Send me the location.”
“My father is admitted in the New Hope Medical Center. We have reserved the top floor for him. Please call me once you reach, and we will take you to his cabin,” Josiah replied.
Hearing the name, Alex remembered it was the same hospital where his brother-in-law, Jakob, was being treated. A frown appeared on his face as he recalled that morning’s interaction with Felicia and her mother.
But eventually, Alex decided to put all things aside and focus on the present.
“Fine, I will visit the hospital this Thursday,” he replied, much to Josiah’s relief.
“I thank you for your time. You are our only hope,” Josiah responded. “I will make all the necessary arrangements. See you soon, Mr. Verlaine.”
As soon as the call disconnected, Alex turned to Dr. Lucy and gave her a summary of their phone call.
“What do you know about this Warrington family?”
“The Warringtons are an A-tier family with assets worth atleast a few billions. It’s certainly not enough to make them a part of the Ascended Circle, which is why they barely know anything about your real identity. But I am guessing they are a resourceful family if Josiah Warrington was able to find your real number,” she replied.
“And he believes I can treat his father,” Alex responded.
Dr. Lucy smiled. “I guess they must have heard about the tremendous successes of the Miracle Maker. But they are hardly worth your attention. I can go on your behalf if you—”
“No, I will go myself,” Alex replied, cutting her off. Staring at his glowing palms, he added, “This is a perfect chance to test my powers.”

The next morning, as Felicia walked into the New Hope Medical Center, she was surprised to see Robert hadn’t arrived yet. She tried calling him, but all her calls went unanswered.
Even though Robert had promised that the Miracle Maker was going to perform the surgery today, there was still no sign of either of them.
She was about to dial the chief medical officer's number when she saw her mother quarreling with a group of men wearing black suits standing near the stairs leading up to the top floor.
“You can’t stop me from using this staircase. My son’s admitted here!” Mrs. Rashford cried out exasperatedly. “Get out of my way before I lose my cool!”
“That doesn’t matter. The top floor is off-limits to all patients and their families,” one of them replied sternly. “Now, back off and stay away from these stairs.”
Furious with what she was hearing, Felicia stepped forward.
“Just what the hell is happening here? How dare you talk to my mother like that?” She demanded an immediate explanation.
The men however, remained stone-faced, refusing to speak another word.
Mrs. Rashford turned around and wrung her hands in frustration. “I told them that Robert has booked a VIP cabin for Jakob upstairs, but these fools won’t let me through. These brainless oafs are saying the whole fifth floor has already been reserved for someone else!”
“Don’t create a commotion. Get moving,” one of the men said, gesturing for them to be off.
Hearing this, Felicia flew into a fit of rage and grumbled in an incensed tone. “You don’t even know who you’re messing with. The VIP cabin on the top floor has been reserved for my brother by Robert Salasar himself. He is the only heir to the most powerful B-tier family in this city, so unless you want to become unemployed for life, don’t push your luck!”
But the men merely smirked at her instead of being bothered by her threats.
“As we said before, the top floor is reserved for our boss. If you want a VIP cabin so badly, you can always try the lower floors,” one of the men replied, gesturing toward the elevator.
“The top floor has the best view, and the cabins upstairs are much bigger as well,” Mrs. Rashford butted in. “My son, Jakob, only deserves the best!”
“Just beat it. That floor is strictly off-limits for you,” came the sharp reply.
“Now, move along. Don't waste our time,” another guard added, shooing them off.
But despite their repeated refusal, Mrs. Rashford refused to budge.
“I am not going anywhere! I’ll see how you stop me from shifting my dear Jakob to the VIP cabin upstairs!”

479. The Ivera Business Plan
Governor Morton’s face blanched as he read that threatening note.He didn’t even have to wonder who it was. He knew for a fact that it had to be Alex.“We’ll just run a trace on this. I’ll find whoever was behind,” the police sergeant said, taking a look at the note. But Governor Morton shook his head.“No need. I don’t think you’ll find any links.”Even though Governor Morton knew this had to be Alex’s handiwork, he couldn’t prove anything. And if he got the cops involved, his own mess would also have been blown open into the public eye.For now, he chose not to take the legal route, but this incident left him deeply disturbed. The message was clear. If Alex wanted, he could get to the Governor at any time. And even the best security in the world wouldn’t have been able to stop him.Governor Morton, however, wasn’t the kind of person to be intimidated so easily.“You are playing with fire, Alex Verlaine. This is my territory,” he muttered on his way back home. “I am not like the mayo
478. Governor’s Day Out
In the afternoon, as Governor Morton switched on the TV, he saw the news of the brutal massacre in Elara. The room was still stained with blood, and the bullet holes were impossible to miss. However, the only ones who were reported as dead were the three assassins the Governor had hired to take Alex out.“What a waste of time and money,” he muttered, cursing it all. “Why the hell did I even pay you? I shouldn’t have hired such morons in the first place.”From what was shown on the news, Governor Morton concluded that the three assassins had gotten into a shooting without knowing each other, and in the mix-up, ended up killing each other.“I guess you are one lucky little mouse,” he scoffed. “But your luck will run out soon enough. You are not going to survive, Ivera, Alex Verlaine.”Just then, he received a call from Raymond Smith.“What kind of idiots did you hire for this job?” he thundered.“I didn’t know they were so useless. I paid each of them half a million for this hit. But al
477. What Goes Around
A rush of heavy footsteps sounded on the corridor outside as armed cops marched up the floor and landed on the door marked 309.They immediately went into high alert as they noticed the bullet holes in the door.“Open up! You’ve been surrounded. There is no way out!”The shout was followed by heavy knocking.“This is the NDPD! Open the damn door!”“Drop your weapon and come out with your hands behind your back!”Alex didn’t stick around to explain what had happened. He knew they would never believe him, and even if they did, he would still land in troubled waters. While the cops continued banging on the door, Alex headed to the bathroom and climbed out of the window. He jumped down from the ledge, landing on top of the dumpster sitting in the corner, and rolled away to safety.Meanwhile, the cops upstairs kicked the door open and barged in.“What the hell happened here?”“Damn. Another drug deal gone wrong?”As they spotted the two dead bodies and the bullets sprayed all across the ro
476. The Assassins
As soon as Alex heard those words, he realized she was hinting at the deal that he had refused earlier in the morning.“The Governor wished you good luck!” The attendant pulled out a suppressed pistol and fired, straight at Alex. The point-blank shot grazed Alex’s left shoulder as he kicked the trolley cart, throwing the assassin off balance, and making her gun wobble off target.“I should have known!”Reacting in a split second, Alex vaulted over the trolley cart and sent the pistol flying off with another kick.Disarmed, the assassin frowned. But instead of running away, she pulled out a knife from her waist and slashed hard.Alex jumped back as the knife grazed his shirt, splitting the white fibers open with the edge of the blade.“You made a huge mistake by coming here!” he warned, pushing the table away and engaging her from up close. The knife slashed and stabbed, but Alex countered every move by ducking and swaying out of the way with perfect precision. Then, with one sudden lu

“Turn the car around!” Alex instructed from the backseat with a sense of grave urgency.“But we are about to reach the Altis Delights. It’s a good five-star hotel,” the driver replied cluelessly.“I’ve changed my mind,” Alex retorted. “Take me out of Hannington. Nuevo Durango sounds good,” he added, thinking on the spur of the moment.“But that is almost 400 miles away. Are you sure?”“Just do what I say. No questions.”Alex was now in the Kleinfeldt District in Hannington, and Nuevo Durango was on the other side of the city.It was a wild request to ask the driver to take a detour and cover 400 miles on the open highway. But the driver obeyed without question. As the sedan took the underpass and emerged on the highway intersection, Alex looked around, but he could no longer see the biker who had been following them. However, Alex still remained wary. The fact that this stalker had just started trailing his car immediately after he walked out of Governor Morton’s mansion made him draw
474. A Game of Dominance and Control
The offer was clear: either stand with Governor Morton and his friends and accept their dictates, or risk their future hostility in a state which they controlled from the ground up.If it were any other aspiring businessman, he would have gladly shaken their hands and accepted their controlling friendship. But Alex wasn’t the type of person to let someone else control his decisions.“You have done your homework on me. I’ll give you that. But I think you still do not know enough about me,” he replied, crossing his left leg over his right. “I am not some jumped-up billionaire looking to print money by any means necessary.”“Then who are you really?” Raymond sneered. “Do enlighten us.”“My name is Alexander Verlaine, and I am the one who makes the rules. I have never bowed to another man before, and I won’t under any circumstances.”“It isn’t wise to turn friends into foes,” Governor Morton muttered. “We are giving you a chance to join hands with us and move forward in the right directio
