After a great deal of contemplation, Alex finally decided to take his chances.
“Alright, I will treat your father,” he said, much to the caller’s relief.
“Thank the heavens!” the voice on the other end exclaimed, exhaling the anxious breath he had been holding for so long. “You will be adequately compensated, Mr. Verlaine. I promise you that.”
Alex, however, had no interest in the man’s money. All he wanted to know was his real identity and how someone like him had managed to obtain his number.
“Before I decide to visit your father, I need to know who I’m talking to and just how you got hold of my number.”
“My name is Josiah Warrington. I’m the only male heir of the Warrington bloodline. We are an A-tier family based in the provincial capital of Lichtenstein,” the voice from the other end revealed. “My friends at the City Council helped me track down your number. They said you were the only one who could help us.”
Even after hearing everything, Alex couldn’t recognize the family as they were far too insignificant for his former self to care about. For now, all he understood from the caller’s replies was that they were desperate to get him to treat their family head.
Alex listened to everything carefully and asked for the address. “I’ll visit the patient soon. Send me the location.”
“My father is admitted in the New Hope Medical Center. We have reserved the top floor for him. Please call me once you reach, and we will take you to his cabin,” Josiah replied.
Hearing the name, Alex remembered it was the same hospital where his brother-in-law, Jakob, was being treated. A frown appeared on his face as he recalled that morning’s interaction with Felicia and her mother.
But eventually, Alex decided to put all things aside and focus on the present.
“Fine, I will visit the hospital this Thursday,” he replied, much to Josiah’s relief.
“I thank you for your time. You are our only hope,” Josiah responded. “I will make all the necessary arrangements. See you soon, Mr. Verlaine.”
As soon as the call disconnected, Alex turned to Dr. Lucy and gave her a summary of their phone call.
“What do you know about this Warrington family?”
“The Warringtons are an A-tier family with assets worth atleast a few billions. It’s certainly not enough to make them a part of the Ascended Circle, which is why they barely know anything about your real identity. But I am guessing they are a resourceful family if Josiah Warrington was able to find your real number,” she replied.
“And he believes I can treat his father,” Alex responded.
Dr. Lucy smiled. “I guess they must have heard about the tremendous successes of the Miracle Maker. But they are hardly worth your attention. I can go on your behalf if you—”
“No, I will go myself,” Alex replied, cutting her off. Staring at his glowing palms, he added, “This is a perfect chance to test my powers.”

The next morning, as Felicia walked into the New Hope Medical Center, she was surprised to see Robert hadn’t arrived yet. She tried calling him, but all her calls went unanswered.
Even though Robert had promised that the Miracle Maker was going to perform the surgery today, there was still no sign of either of them.
She was about to dial the chief medical officer's number when she saw her mother quarreling with a group of men wearing black suits standing near the stairs leading up to the top floor.
“You can’t stop me from using this staircase. My son’s admitted here!” Mrs. Rashford cried out exasperatedly. “Get out of my way before I lose my cool!”
“That doesn’t matter. The top floor is off-limits to all patients and their families,” one of them replied sternly. “Now, back off and stay away from these stairs.”
Furious with what she was hearing, Felicia stepped forward.
“Just what the hell is happening here? How dare you talk to my mother like that?” She demanded an immediate explanation.
The men however, remained stone-faced, refusing to speak another word.
Mrs. Rashford turned around and wrung her hands in frustration. “I told them that Robert has booked a VIP cabin for Jakob upstairs, but these fools won’t let me through. These brainless oafs are saying the whole fifth floor has already been reserved for someone else!”
“Don’t create a commotion. Get moving,” one of the men said, gesturing for them to be off.
Hearing this, Felicia flew into a fit of rage and grumbled in an incensed tone. “You don’t even know who you’re messing with. The VIP cabin on the top floor has been reserved for my brother by Robert Salasar himself. He is the only heir to the most powerful B-tier family in this city, so unless you want to become unemployed for life, don’t push your luck!”
But the men merely smirked at her instead of being bothered by her threats.
“As we said before, the top floor is reserved for our boss. If you want a VIP cabin so badly, you can always try the lower floors,” one of the men replied, gesturing toward the elevator.
“The top floor has the best view, and the cabins upstairs are much bigger as well,” Mrs. Rashford butted in. “My son, Jakob, only deserves the best!”
“Just beat it. That floor is strictly off-limits for you,” came the sharp reply.
“Now, move along. Don't waste our time,” another guard added, shooing them off.
But despite their repeated refusal, Mrs. Rashford refused to budge.
“I am not going anywhere! I’ll see how you stop me from shifting my dear Jakob to the VIP cabin upstairs!”

343. Deconstruction
Josiah’s unexpected call put Alex in a pickle. After their violent altercation at the steel mill, Josiah hadn’t even answered Alex’s last twenty texts. Yet now, he apparently wanted to provide him with critical information about Ross Spencer. And what made things even more concerning was the fact that Josiah wanted to meet Alex at a deserted construction site instead of texting him the details or visiting his motel. It could only mean one of two things: someone was already onto Josiah, and he was trying to maintain appearances, or he had ulterior motives in mind.Whatever it was, the opportunity to obtain more information about Ross’ uranium mining deal with Angelo Velasquez was simply too big to ignore.Going against his better judgment, Alex eventually decided to make the trip to the construction yard and hear Josiah out for himself.Alex headed out of his room and turned his keys in the lock before taking the rear exit. The back door of the motel opened onto a dusty parking lot, wh

He knew if this got out into the open, it would completely destroy his public image.Alex could easily leak the whole recording online, but the fact that he had chosen to hold back for now made Angelo nervous. It could only mean one thing.Alex was planning to use this video as leverage against him and put him on a leash. This would not only keep Angelo and his cops in check but also prevent him from using the media to peddle narratives against him.Angelo was still thinking of a way to deal with Alex when his phone rang. It was Oleg on the other end of the line.“I think I told you not to contact me again. Are you simply ignorant or too dumb to follow instructions?” he muttered, seething with frustration.“This is important. We are in a deep mess. The Taxicab Commission found contraband in three of our cabs.”“I told you to stash the moonshine away, you damn fool!”“It wasn’t moonshine. They

“Did you just threaten a cop, you bastard?” The senior officer pressed the gun closer to Alex’s head. “This can get ugly real soon for you. And you don’t want to go down that hole!”“I know who you’re working for. It’s Angelo Velasquez, isn’t it?” Alex shot back, snapping toward the officer in front of him. “How much does the mayor pay you for your services? I hope it is enough for an early retirement?”The two other cops looked at each other. They were supposed to keep Angelo’s name out of it. But now that Alex had already figured things out, they hesitated. The senior officer, however, stuck to the script.“You son of a bitch! Don’t you dare talk crap about the mayor. He is a good man.”Alex scoffed at his words.“A good man? Sure, maybe for pigs like you, whom he feeds every day.”“I swear I’ll just pull the trigger. I don’t even care about who you are!”Realizing the senior cop was about to lose control, his partner quickly intervened.“Sergeant Davos. I think we should take it do

But they were prepared to face the consequences just to expose him to the public.Once the investor conference ended, Alex got back in his sedan and asked the driver to head for Reddington Square, so he could grab a quick bite before heading back to his place. As the car rolled out of the parking lot, Alex noticed one of the security guards at the entrance reach for the radio and mutter something under his breath. He saw the gray and blue company logo on the guard’s cap, and it immediately struck him that this guy belonged to the same security agency that had been in charge of guarding the warehouse he had burned two nights ago.Something tingled in his mind as he felt it was simply too much to be a coincidence.Halfway down St. Kramer Road, Alex felt eyes on him at the three-way intersection. He didn’t turn back, but glanced through his side window to make it less obvious.Throug

It had started with Dustin Hoffman getting off the hook, and now the Taxicab Commission was investigating the cab drivers operating in Cobalt Cove. Angelo realized this wasn’t a mere coincidence.Someone was pulling the strings from above, and only one person came to his mind.“It’s Alex…Alex freaking Verlaine!” he muttered. “Listen up, Oleg! Stash all the moonshine away. Do whatever it takes to get rid of the damn bottles. If they get their hands on the moonshine, you won’t be able to wriggle free from this one.”“Most of the crates are stashed away in our garages outside the city limits. But…”“But what?”“A few drivers were scheduled to make deliveries tonight. They are carrying a couple of bottles at least.”“Call them up and tell them to dump the bottles at once!” Angelo yelled back sharply. “Alex knows about us. I don’t know how he figured it out, but he knows that you have my backing. He is going after your drivers to dry up my funds. And we cannot let him get the upper hand. D

Dustin punched the street lamp in front of him and cursed aloud.“Screw it. Screw it all, damn it!”His knuckles reddened as the impact bruised his skin, but he clenched his teeth to supressed his groan.“Damn you, Angelo!”The manager came running to his assistance.“Mr. Hoffman, you look hurt. Let me call you an ambulance!”But Dustin stared daggers at him and grabbed him by his collar. “Shut the hell up and give me your damn phone!”The pale-faced man quickly pulled out his phone and handed it to Dustin without question.Dustin snorted hard and dialed Angelo’s number from memory.“Who is this?”“It’s me, your friend, Dustin Hoffman.”“Dustin? What’s the matter? You sound flustered. Is everything okay?”Dustin suppressed a sardonic chuckle and replied, “You know what’s wrong. You set the department dogs on me. Call them off, Angelo. This is too much.”“What are you talking about?” Angelo continued with his pretense of ignorance. “I don’t understand anything.”“They shut down all my
