Jakob had been admitted in this hospital for nearly a year now, and every nurse and every doctor had always done their best to cater to Mrs. Rashford's demands.
But today, not a single hospital staff member intervened on their behalf.
Furious at being harassed by a few glorified security guards in suits, Mrs. Rashford poured all her anger on Felicia.
“You really are a useless daughter!” she rebuked with bitterness in her voice. “I swear it’s no use to be the CEO of the city’s third most popular cosmetic brand if you can’t even help your own brother.”
“I am trying my best—”
“I don’t need your excuses!” Mrs. Rashford snapped back at her. “Just call Robert and ask him to deal with this nonsense. I am sure he can handle these idiots better than you.”
Felicia didn’t dare to talk back but immediately dialed Robert’s number. The phone rang for a whole minute, but even after the third try, he didn’t answer.
Disappointed and distraught with herself, Felicia looked up at her mother timidly. “I think it’s best if we come back tomorrow when Robert is here. There is no point wasting our breath on these men.”
Mrs. Rashford wasn’t the type of person to back out of conflicts, but seeing the suited men standing firmly on the stairs made her second-guess her choices. They didn’t look like the type that could be bribed or coaxed into submission.
Feeling intimidated by them, she eventually decided to leave with Felicia but promised they would be back tomorrow to teach those suited snakes a lesson.
The next day, Alex and Dr. Lucy arrived at the hospital together, and as soon as they entered through the front door, they spotted Felicia and Mrs. Rashford conversing with Robert in the lobby.
“I called you three times yesterday, but you didn’t even answer once!” Felicia complained to Robert. “You have no idea what we had to go through.”
Robert remembered he was at a nightclub all evening, getting shitfaced with his friends and partying till the sun came up. He hadn’t even bothered to check his phone till now, but there was no way in hell he could let Felicia know that.
“I was quite busy yesterday, my dove. Getting hold of the Miracle Maker was no easy task, even for my secretary, so I had to step in to negotiate.”
He lied as easily as he breathed, and Felicia readily believed every single word.
Robert took her hand in his and looked into her eyes.
“The Miracle Maker will be arriving today to perform the surgery. Your brother will recover in no time. There is nothing to worry about,” he said reassuringly.
“I am so sorry for being mad at you.” Felicia’s worry lines gradually vanished as she smiled softly. “I am so glad that you are here for me and my family. My husband could never.”
“Everything is going to be fine now. I promise.” Robert kissed her hand and vowed to stay by her side till the surgery was complete.
“Those men gave us a really hard time yesterday,” Felicia whispered, pointing at the suited men standing near the staircase.
“I’ll handle these rats. Don’t worry.”
Robert strutted up the lobby and approached the men in black. “What the hell are you doing here blocking our way?” he asked haughtily. “I am Robert Salasar, the only heir to the Salasar family. I think you know how unwise it is to offend the most powerful B-tier family in the city. My one call can land you all in deep trouble!”
However, despite all his threats, the men in black remained completely unfazed. They continued standing near the staircase, blocking Robert’s path.
Feeling humiliated in front of Felicia and Mrs. Rashford, Robert immediately dialed a number and called his men.
Within two minutes, two bodyguards showed up at the hospital and joined Robert at his side.
“You don’t really want this to get ugly, do you?” Robert thundered, glaring at the suited men. “Get out of our way if you know what’s good for you.”
But instead of moving away, the men spoke into their radios, notifying their supervisor about the situation and assuring him everything was under control.
Infuriated by their insolence, Robert swore he would make them regret this. But just as he was about to make another call, Alex and Dr. Lucy walked up to them.
Seeing the two together made Felicia even angrier. She immediately laid into Alex with her fiery words.
“What the hell took you so long? Don’t you remember it’s your job to donate blood to my brother thrice a week?” she asked exasperatedly.
Alex, however, didn’t bat an eyelid. Without a single word, he pulled out a divorce agreement and handed it to Felicia.
“The divorce papers are ready. Read it if you have to. I’ll wait for your signature,” he said coldly.
Felicia thought Alex was only threatening her to test her resolve, and decided to call out his bluff.
“It’s alright, Alex. You don’t need to be so bothered. My brother is getting the surgery done today, and we will no longer require your blood,” she sneered. “I thought I’d give you another chance to prove your worth, but you still continue to prance around with this woman,” she said, eyeing Dr. Lucy.
Alex ignored her remarks and pulled out a fountain pen from his pocket. Extending it to her, he pressed the issue.
“Don’t waste your breath. I am only here for your signature.”
Infuriated by his words, Felicia snatched the pen from him and hurriedly signed the papers without even reading.
“If that’s how you want to play this game, then here you go. Come on, Alex! It’s your turn now!” she snapped back, returning the papers to him.
Felicia thought Alex was only trying to get on her nerves and manipulate her with bluffs. But instead of apologizing, he grabbed the pen and signed the papers the very next moment, leaving her dumbstruck.

The next morning, Alex drove straight to Greenville and, with Shawn’s help, hired a black cabriolet to take him to his next destination.Inside the Grid Iron County Club, the most influential and wealthy men in the countryside had gathered to discuss politics over a cup of morning tea before the races started.“You know Alexandria should have signed a peace treaty by now. This cold war is going to take us nowhere,” a man wearing a high hat and black morning coat said, sucking on his clay tobacco pipe.“There can be no peace with the enemy. Valheim will ruin our economy if we let them set foot on the mainland,” another man smoking a cigar replied. “Besides, we have already wasted enough tax money feeding our soldiers. Wouldn’t want it to be for nothing.”“Forget about the war. We should focus on more domestic matters,” a third, older man cut in. He was dressed in a white suit paired with a flush red tie and had slick gray hair, combed back to perfection. “I hear the Warringtons are pla

That night, Alex drove out of Greenville and headed straight for Washington Square, where Samantha Atkins had already sent her men to secure the plot that was secured for Kronos Tech’s new project.Upon arrival, Alex was greeted by the Governor’s secretary, who congratulated him on the successful acquisition.“This plot in Washington Square stretches for 75 acres, while the one in Suburbia adds another 25 acres. Good luck with your new project, Mr. Verlaine,” he said, extending his hand with a formal smile.Alex greeted him with a firm handshake and looked over his shoulder, surveying his new plot.“Now this is what I call prime real estate. The money will be sent to the mayor’s office, and you will get a flat fifteen percent commission for your help.”The secretary shook Alex’s hand vigorously as his smile widened. “It is always nice working with you, Mr. Verlaine. You truly are a great businessman.”Alex smiled back at him, but kept his focus sharp. “That’s all well and good, but I

Dr. Lucy overheard the call, and that familiar name made her heartbeat quicken. Godrick wasn’t just another informer; he was Alexandria’s most resourceful spy and had his eyes all over the country.Back when Alexandria was at its height of glory under Alex’s brilliant military leadership, Godrick served as his most lethal weapon for blackmail and international sabotage.Even though it had been many years since Godrick had gone into hiding in the countryside, the elusive Black Hawk still had his finger on every pulse that mattered. And Alex had just given him a new sense of purpose.Dr. Lucy’s brow creased with worry as she realized Alex was on the warpath again.Blake Warrington and his mother had crossed a dangerous line by framing Alex in front of Josiah, and sending men to steal from the greenhouse had only made things worse. The gloves were off for Alex now, and he wasn’t going to fight fair.“Are you sure they are worth the effort?” Dr. Lucy piped in her feeble voice. “We can jus

Alex looked carefully at the man kneeling before him and understood he was a local like the rest of Blake’s cronies. However, unlike the three idiots he had run into on the road before, this guy didn’t seem like a simple farmer.“Do you have a name?” Alex asked, letting go of the man’s arm.“Huh?” The guy looked up, all confused and scared. Caressing his broken fingers, he asked, “What?”“What’s your name? And what the hell do you do around here?” Alex probed. “You don’t look like a farmer.”The man wrapped his fist inside a dirty gray kerchief and replied in a croaking voice, “My name’s Shawn. We all used to work in Blake Warrington’s family tannery. But that shut down two years ago. Now, we just do odd jobs for their family for money.”Alex kept his eyes trained on Shawn. “Why did he send you to Greenville? Why were you trying to sneak into this greenhouse?”“Blake Warrington wanted us to see what was being grown inside the greenhouse and get him a sample of that plant,” Shawn repli

Even though Jennifer and their oldest maid had raised fingers at Alex, he refused to believe the Miracle Doctor who had saved him could do something so lowly.Even Catherine Warrington could feel something wasn’t right. Despite every finger pointing at Alex and Dr. Lucy, her heart told her they were blameless in all this.Josiah, however, was still shaking with rage.“This is why I don’t trust outsiders. They are only looking to rub shoulders with us for money or influence. And this damn bastard dared to go after my own daughter!” he cursed, fuming with anger.“But Dr. Verlaine doesn’t need the money. He refused to accept any payment for Edgar’s treatment,” Catherine Warrington responded. “I think you just made a big mistake, Josiah.”Immediately, Jennifer Warrington’s scornful voice rang out in the background.“Dr.

Jennifer’s carefully planned move had turned the tables in an instant and sown doubts into the minds of the Warringtons.“There is nothing going on between me and Elizabeth!” Alex protested, vehemently denying the false allegations.“Then why did you call her into your room that night?” Jennifer Warrington probed. “What was so secretive that you couldn’t discuss it in front of her own family?”Alex knew he couldn’t spill Elizabeth’s medical condition out in the open and simmered down. But Elizabeth wasn’t ready to keep quiet while her aunt continued hammering her reputation.“Dr. Verlaine didn’t call me into his room that night. I went there myself to…to thank him for helping grandpa. Nothing happened between us.”“That’s enough!” Josiah Warrington thundered.“But dad, I really—”“Quiet, I said!” Josiah shouted her down before marching up to Alex. “I trusted you…held you in high regard.
