Ryatt’s POV
The scavenger’s weight was a mountain of leathery muscle crushing my hollow chest. Its needle-teeth snapped inches from my nose, ropes of black, foul-smelling saliva dripping onto my gown. I couldn't breathe. My ribs groaned, ready to snap like dry kindling.
"Get... off..." I wheezed, my voice a pathetic rasp.
My hand fumbled blindly across the bedside tray that had been knocked over in the struggle. My fingers brushed against cold, hard steel. A scalpel. It was a discarded tool from a dressing change earlier that morning, rusted at the hinge and dull from neglect.
The monster shrieked, a sound like grinding metal, and lunged for my throat.
"Die!" I screamed, the word tearing through my raw throat.
I swung the scalpel with every ounce of pathetic strength I had left. The rusted blade didn't slice; it tore. I buried it into the creature's neck, but my arms were so weak they shook violently under the effort. The monster didn't go down. It thrashed, its talons raking across my shoulders, carving deep furrows into my pale, thin skin.
"Why won't you... just fall?" I gasped, my vision blurring as blood loss joined the cancer's toll.
I stabbed again. And again. Each blow was slower than the last. My muscles burned with a lethal fatigue, the lactic acid feeling like molten lead in my veins. The creature’s claws sank into my thigh, and I felt the bone pop. I let out a strangled cry, slamming the scalpel into the creature’s eye socket.
With a final, wet gurgle, the scavenger slumped. Its weight nearly finished what the cancer started, pinning me to the blood-soaked mattress.
I shoved at the carcass, my breath coming in ragged, wet hitches. Hhh-koff. I leaned over the side of the bed, hacking violently. Thick, dark blood splattered against the linoleum.
"Still dying," I whispered to the empty, screaming hospital. "Even now."
I looked down at the creature. A soft, rhythmic pulse caught my eye. Beneath its torn chest cavity, something was glowing. A faint, ethereal light throbbed within a fist-sized organ.
[Gluttony of the Void triggered.]
[Consume the essence to stabilize.]
The red text shimmered in my vision. My stomach didn't just growl; it roared. The hunger was a physical clawing in my gut, more painful than the gashes on my arms.
"Eat it?" I asked the empty air, my voice trembling. "You want me to eat that?"
[Consume.]
I didn't have the strength to argue. I reached into the cooling chest of the monster, my fingers squelching through Gore. I grabbed the glowing heart. It felt warm, vibrating with a frantic energy that set my nerves on fire. I didn't hesitate. I shoved the pulsating mass into my mouth.
It didn't taste like meat. It tasted like electricity and copper, a surge of pure, raw existence that slid down my throat and exploded in my chest.
"Gah!" I fell back, my back arching off the bed.
[Essence Consumed.]

[Reward: Lesser Healing Factor acquired.]
Then, the agony started.
"What are you doing to me?" I screamed, but the sound was swallowed by the chaos in the halls.
My body began to heave. I rolled off the bed, hitting the floor with a dull thud. I could hear my bones. It wasn't the sound of them breaking, but the sound of them knitting. The snap of my thigh bone resetting was like a gunshot in the small room. My skin, once translucent and sickly, began to thicken. The sunken hollows of my cheeks pushed outward as muscle fibers wove themselves together out of thin air.
I gripped the legs of the bed, my knuckles turning white as the pale skin shifted to a healthy, tan hue. The exhaustion that had defined my life for years was being burned away by a localized sun in my solar plexus.
"Stop... please," I groaned, though my voice was already losing its rasp. It was sounding deeper, fuller.
I looked at my hands. The tremors were gone. The thin, twig-like fingers were filling out, the grip strength returning with terrifying speed. The gashes from the scavenger’s claws were literally zipping shut, leaving behind nothing but faint, fading pink lines.
I stood up. I didn't stumble. I didn't need to catch my breath. For the first time in three years, my lungs felt clear.
"I'm... I'm okay?" I whispered, touching my chest. "Is it gone? Is the cancer gone?"
A red box flickered into existence, pulsing with a low, ominous light.
[Status Update.]
[Condition: Terminal Cancer — Mutated.]
My heart hammered against my newly formed ribs. "Mutated? What does that mean? Did you fix it or not?"
[The malignancy has integrated with the System interface.]
[Current State: Dormant/Starving.]
"Starving?" I demanded, pacing the small room. I felt a predatory grace in my steps that I didn't recognize. "Explain it to me! Am I still dying?"
[The mutation requires constant essence to remain in check.]
[Current Regression Level: 12%]
[Warning: If essence levels drop to zero, the mutated cancer will accelerate. Time to total organ failure: 72 hours.]
I stared at the words, the cold reality sinking in. The system hadn't cured me. It had turned my death into a leash.
"So I have to keep doing this," I said, looking at the dead scavenger on the floor. "I have to keep killing these things just to stay in this body?"
[Correct.]
[You must fill the gauge to regress the cancer.]
[Hunt. Consume. Evolve. Or expire.]

Chapter 8
Ryatt’s POVThe silence following Mark’s death was heavy, thick with the smell of pulverized stone and iron-scented blood. I watched from the shadows of the collapsed storefront, my breath shallow. The Awakeners, who only minutes ago had marched into this plaza like conquerors, looked like children realizing the dark was actually full of monsters."He's dead," one of the men gasped, his voice cracking. "Easton, his chest... there’s nothing left of his chest.""Shut up and aim!" Easton shouted, though his voice lacked its usual steel. He wiped a smear of grit from his forehead, his eyes darting between his remaining three members and the gargoyle."Aim at what?" a woman screamed, clutching a jagged piece of metal. "It doesn't care about our powers! It just eats them! I’m done. I’m not dying for a fucking hospital run!""Rodriguez, get back in line!" Easton barked. "That’s an order!""Orders don't matter when we're all meat!" she yelled back. She turned her head, looking at the dark all
Chapter 7
Ryatt’s POVThe red interface pulsed in the dim light of the loading dock, the jagged edges of the warning screen casting a bloody glow over my hands."System," I whispered, my voice raspy. "Identify the exact coordinates of the Zone Boss. Give me a map overlay."A new window snapped into existence, replacing the warning. A wireframe map of the district flickered to life, showing a pulsing white dot in the center of the grid. "Target located," I murmured, tracking the icon. My heart skipped a beat as the scale of the map became clear. "Wait. Zoom in. Show me the building name."The red lines sharpened, revealing the familiar layout of the city's medical plaza. The white dot was anchored directly on the roof of the tallest spire."St. Jude’s," I said, a hollow laugh escaping my throat. "You’ve got to be kidding me."It was the hospital. The same sterile, white-tiled purgatory where I’d spent the last three years of my life waiting for my lungs to fail. I’d been lying on a deathbed in
Chapter 6
Ryatt’s POV"Get him!" Easton roared. The command was like a starter’s pistol. The man with the glowing green hand lunged from my left, while two others circled to my right. They moved with a predatory speed I hadn't seen in civilians, but my mind was already several steps ahead. "Stay back!" I shouted, swinging the butt of my rifle in a wide arc. The green-handed man sneered, ducking the blow. "Or what, terminal case? You going to cough on us?""I said stay back!" I repeated. My body felt electric. The Master Firearm Proficiency and the Lesser Healing Factor were working in tandem, my nerves firing with a clarity that was almost intoxicating. He reached for my throat, his fingers buzzing with that strange energy. "Give us the bag and maybe—"I didn't let him finish. I dropped low, sweeping his legs out from under him. As he hit the pavement with a grunt, I slammed my elbow into his sternum. The impact felt different than it would have a week ago. I could feel the density of my own
Chapter 5
Ryatt’s POVI stopped dead, my grip tightening on the rifle. The adrenaline from the gargoyle attack was still surging through my veins, but the sight of the people in front of me chilled it instantly. These weren't the starving, frantic survivors I’d just left behind at the pharmacy. They stood with a disciplined stillness that made my hair stand up. Their formation was perfect—a tactical semi-circle that didn't just block the road; it claimed it."Don't even think about the side gaps," one of them said, a woman to my left holding a heavy steel pipe wrapped in barbed wire.I glanced over my shoulder. Two more had stepped out from the shadows of the alley behind me, cutting off the way I’d come. They had me boxed in. The way they moved was synchronized, like a pack of wolves that had done this a hundred times."You're making a mistake," I said, my voice raspy. I shifted my weight, eyeing a narrow space between a dumpster and the wall to my right. If I used Sprint now, maybe I could—
Chapter 4
Ryatt’s POVThe red notification pulsed in my vision, but I didn't move toward it. Instead, I pulled back into the shadows of a brick alcove, my chest heaving despite the newfound strength in my lungs. I focused on the translucent red interface, trying to force it to show me something more than just stats and warnings."What are you?" I whispered, my voice raspy. "Where did you come from?"I navigated through a sub-menu I hadn't noticed before, a flickering icon that looked like a jagged signal wave. When I tapped it mentally, the interface didn't just show me my own status. It expanded. A massive, scrolling ticker of data streamed past my eyes, far too fast to read, but the headers were clear enough.Sector 7-G: Terra. Integration status: 12%.My heart hammered against my ribs. "Sector? Integration?"Beneath the text, a low-frequency hum vibrated in my skull, and then a voice—or the impression of one—echoed through the system. "...broadcast signal strength at sixty percent... harvest
Chapter 3
Ryatt’s POVI pushed the heavy fire door open, the screech of metal on metal echoing through the silent, gore-streaked corridor. My legs felt steady. Too steady. I looked down at my forearms, watching the way the muscles flexed beneath skin that no longer looked like translucent parchment."Mutated," I whispered, the word tasting like lead in my mouth. "You integrated my death into your programming. That’s what you did, isn't it?"I waited for a response, but the red screen remained dark. I pressed my palm against my chest, waiting for the familiar, stabbing hitch in my lungs. It didn't come. I took a deep, experimental breath. No coughing fit. No blood. Just a strange, buzzing energy that felt like a coiled spring beneath my ribs."Am I actually better?" I asked the empty hallway. "Or is this just a trick? Some kind of high before the end?"I checked my pulse. It was slow, rhythmic, and powerful. For years, I’d been a walking corpse, and now, in the middle of a slaughterhouse, I felt
