Chapter 1

The high marble dais of the Ascension Pavilion in Heavenfall City smelled of burning incense and pure ozone.

Above the heads of five thousand young men and women, glowing rectangular screens floated in the air. Some were pale blue, others deep silver, and a rare few shone with radiant gold.

Every few seconds, another youth stepped up to the great crystalline pillar at the center of the hall, placed their hand against the glass, and received their divine gift from the heavens.

Laughter, proud roars, and gasps of awe bounced off the vaulted ceiling.

Only one boy stood with his hands resting quietly inside the pockets of his faded canvas jacket.

Logan Carter looked at the massive obsidian board at the edge of the dais. Next to his name, the letters were clear, dark, and hollow:

[Logan Carter — Age: 18 — System Status: NULL / UNREGISTERED]

He had waited three hours in line, not because he believed a miracle would happen today, but because the law of Heavenfall City was absolute.

Every citizen who turned eighteen had to attend the Grand Ascension. If you awakened a system, you received a rank, a guild assignment, and the right to hunt monsters for glory.

If you failed, you received a red stamp on your paper card and a monthly civilian survival stipend of eighty copper coins.

Logan only wanted the copper coins. He needed them to buy salt, dried meat, and a fresh whetstone.

"Move out of the line, blank," a guard barked, resting a glowing halberd against the barrier. "Go to the lower desk to get your reject mark. Stop wasting the priests' time."

Logan did not frown. He did not curse the heavens. He simply nodded and took a step toward the wooden ramp that led down to the civilian registry.

"Logan." The voice was soft, clear, and cold.

Logan stopped. He turned his head slowly.

A young woman stood on the top tier of the marble stairs. Her hair was the color of fresh wheat, tied back with a silk ribbon.

Above her brow floated a large, brilliant golden window that cast warm light across her fair cheeks. Golden runes danced around her shoulders like tiny, singing birds.

[Victoria Reed — System: Celestial Priestess (A-Rank) — Level: 1]

Three years ago, when the first rifts opened and monsters crawled out of the earth, Victoria had shivered beside Logan in the cold basements of the outer slums.

Logan had stolen bread to feed her. Logan had spent three months hunting wild bog-rats with a sharpened iron pipe to buy her warm boots for the winter. They had promised each other that whatever the heavens gave them, they would share it.

Now, Victoria looked down at him as if he were a stain on her new white silk robes.

She walked down the steps. Two young men in silver breastplates followed closely behind her like guard dogs.

When she reached Logan, she did not look into his eyes. Her gaze stayed fixed on his worn boots and the frayed cuffs of his jacket.

"You should not have come today," she said. Her voice carried across the quiet hall. The initiates nearby stopped whispering and turned to watch. "You knew what the crystal would say. You have no spiritual root. You have no core. You are an empty cup, Logan."

"I came for the stamp, Victoria," Logan said evenly. "It is the law. Give me the paper so I can leave."

Victoria reached into the pouch at her waist. She did not pull out paper.

She pulled out a simple, thin silver ring. It was scratched, dented, and lacked any magical luster. It was the only thing Logan’s mother had left him before the fever took her during the Long Winter. Logan had given it to Victoria on the night she turned seventeen.

"A priestess of the High Temple cannot carry common garbage," Victoria said.

She held the ring between her thumb and forefinger. She channeled a tiny sliver of golden mana from her fingertips.

The old silver cracked down the middle with a sharp, ugly pop. Victoria opened her fingers.

The two broken halves tumbled through the air and struck the toes of Logan’s leather boots, bouncing into the gray dust on the marble floor.

"Our agreement is over," Victoria said, her face completely flat, devoid of any guilt. "The system has calculated my compatibility. My path lies in the Upper District. The Grand Temple has already matched my holy aura with a true lineage. We live in different worlds now, Logan. Five years you spent lifting pig iron in the yard, swinging dull swords until your hands bled, pretending you could match the heavens with muscle. Look at you. You are still nothing."

Logan looked down at the broken pieces of his mother’s ring. He bent his knees, picked up the two silver fragments, and slipped them safely into his breast pocket, right next to his heart.

He did not raise his voice. He did not show his teeth.

"You could have just handed it back to me, Victoria," Logan said quietly.

"Hand it back?"

A loud, booming laugh cut through the hall.

The crowd parted instantly. Even the city guards straightened their backs and lowered their heads.

A tall young man strode forward. His shoulders were wide, covered in heavy crimson armor forged from the shell of an Abyssal Beetle.

At his hip hung a heavy broadsword wrapped in black leather straps. Above his head, letters burned like hot coals:

[Brandon Cox — System: Berserker Warlord: Ashen Cleaver (S-Rank) — Level: 5]

Brandon Cox was the second son of the Iron Vanguard Clan, the family that owned three iron mines and commanded two thousand elite system hunters in the city.

Brandon smiled, showing white, predatory teeth. He walked straight up to Victoria and placed a heavy, armored arm possessively around her slim waist.

Victoria did not flinch; instead, she leaned slightly into his broad chest, her golden priestess aura blending with his crimson warrior light.

"Why should she hand trash to a beggar?" Brandon asked, looking at Logan as if he were looking at a cockroach crawling across a banquet table. "When a dog loses its collar, you do not hand it back to the dirt. You throw it away."
