Chapter 7:

Kelvin looked at Diana’s determined face and his eyes which had been filled with anger became colder as he stared at her.

He had thought she had changed after these peaceful days but he had forgotten a pig will always return to the way it was no matter how it had been washed.

Her obedience for a few days has only been for a show.

“Mama…”

Mia’s tiny voice sounded breaking the tension between them, Kelvin turned and clenched his fist when he saw his daughter’s downcast expression. He watched as she reached out to hold Diana’s dress tightly which made Diana crunch beside her.

“Mama…are you leaving again?” She asked in a choked voice that made one's heart bleed. With teary eyes, she pleaded, “Don’t go, mama…” She sniffed, then pointed at the cake on the table, “Look, it's Mama’s cake. Don't leave Mia..”

Kelvin's heart was pierced through, his eyes turned red as he looked at Diana and parted his lips to tell her not to reject their daughter, but before he could voice out his words, he heard her gentle voice—

“Sweetheart, Mummy isn't leaving you, okay? Mummy just needs to go save a friend, mama will be back soon, alright?” Diana coaxed in a gentle voice, then raised her pinky finger, “Let's pinky promise, okay?” She said, but it seems Mia was so disappointed as she didn't raise her fingers but silently bowed her head as little gems fell from her eyes.

Diana looked at her daughter helplessly, but still stood up and turned to Kelvin, “I promise to be back soon, okay?!” she said anxiously.

The anger Kelvin felt suddenly cooled off, he looked at her, then parted his lips and spat out calmly, “If you leave today, then, we’re done!”

Diana paused, she looked at him with clear impatience, her eyes flashed with confusion, “Why do you have to control me? I'm only going to help a friend, it's not a big deal.”

Kevin’s face was expressionless. “Is it really helping a friend, or is there something else—you know that better than I do.”

Diana paused, her eyes flashed anger at his words, “How could you be so petty and dirty minded?! I only needed to go save a life which is understandable but all you could think of is some dirty thought?! Okay then, think all you want!” She snapped back, picked up her coat which she had placed on the chair, then walked out with a cold aura.

Kelvin stood there with his eyes fixed on Diana’s back and even after he couldn't see her anymore, his gaze still didn't shift. His eyes were empty, filled with confusion and pain.

“Daddy, Mama… She left again!”

The heartbreaking sobs of his daughter woke Kelvin up from his daze, he turned to look at his daughter and immediately rushed to her side. She was only 5 years old but had to face this, and the painful part of all this was that she understood what was going on.

Mia had always been a smart child and even without telling her, she could sense the mood.

Kelvin's eyes which had been confused and dazed before suddenly cleared up, he turned calm and placed the crying Mia on the couch then stood up to look at the evening mess indifferently.

Without a change of expression, he walked to his work table, picked up the divorce paper he had drafted days ago, then clenched the pen he had picked up at the side.

He closed his eyes tightly, and the pen in his hand tightly tightened, his lips trembled and everything that had happened played on in his mind, and lastly, the cries of his daughter entered his ears. His face which had turned pale became calm again, and when his eyes snapped open, he wasted no time in signing his name on the papers.

He placed the pen next to the divorce paper he had just signed and placed it inside the folder and placed both in an obvious place where he knew Diana would see it immediately she came in.

Without looking back, he turned to look at his daughter, picked her up from the couch and patted her back gently.

“Do you still like Mummy?” Kelvin's soothing voice asked his daughter.

Mia paused, then cried even harder, “No! I don't want Mama anymore.”

Kelvin swallowed, “Why, Mia? She’s mama, right?” He asked again, but who knew Mia would shake her head more resolutely this time.

Like a little adult, she explained, “Mama doesn't love Mia and Daddy anymore. If she does, she won't leave!”

Kelvin was stunned. His eyes which looked at his 5-year-old daughter flashed with surprise and heartbreak.

He understood that for a child to have this thought, she must have been hurt so deeply. His heart ached so much for his daughter. He hugged her tightly and rocked her body.

His eyes were filled with determination. If Diana didn’t care about their daughter, then it was time to let go of everything.

Meanwhile, Diana rushed to the residence of Harry, she drove all the way, her heart uneasy as she kept trying to reach Harry’s phone but it was unanswered.

She couldn’t help but grow more anxious, so she drove faster and in no time, she got to his residence.

She rushed all the way to his apartment, her legs ran fast and her hands wouldn’t stop calling his phone. Finally, she reached his own apartment and without wasting time, she began knocking.

“Harry!! Open up! Are you there?!” She yelled and hit the door hard hoping this would wake him up if he had fainted.

“Harry! Please, open the door!! Are you in there?!” She yelled again and knocked heavily.

Her brows furrowed as she heard no response, she was about to knock again when the door was suddenly unlocked.

Her eyes flashed with joy as she turned, “Harry—” she paused after seeing a middle aged woman walk out of the door.

Both Diana and the woman were stunned, but then Diana snapped out of her daze as she rushed towards the woman, “Do you know Harry? Is he inside? How is he?!” She asked anxiously.

The woman looked at Diana in surprise, then a smile appeared on her face, “Are you his girlfriend?”

Diana's heart skipped a beat, her face turned confused and she was about to deny it when the door opened again and the person she had been worried about walked out calmly and healthily which threw Diana back.

Harry's face lit up in surprise when he saw Diana, “Diana, you’re here?!” He then turned to the woman who stood next to him and nodded at Diana with a soft gaze—

“Mum, meet Diana, my girlfriend!”

This knowledge came from experience—from standing in rooms where she had to earn her place twice over. Power announced itself long before it spoke. It moved ahead of people like a current, bending the atmosphere to its will.It was in the sudden hush when she entered a room. The way heels faltered mid-step, conversations died halfway through a sentence, laughter retreated into tight smiles. It was in the recalibration—voices lowering, spines straightening, assistants moving faster as if time itself had accelerated. Phones silenced too quickly. Chairs pulled back too sharply. Respect disguised as efficiency. This morning, the boardroom at Verdict Crown sounded exactly right. The tension hummed, subtle but unmistakable, confirming her presence without ceremony. The soil did not harden out of impatience. Everything waited. Everything trusted time.Logan, however, did not.“You’re quiet,” Logan said.Kelvin crouched again, fingers brushing the base of a young plant. He loosened the soil gently, as if the roots might bruise under anything rougher. “I’m thinking.”Patrick shifted behind Logan, adjusting his stance so he wouldn’t cast a shadow too close. He knew better than to interrupt moments like this.“You think too much,” Logan replied. “That’s always been your problem.”Kelvin smiled faintly. “I learned that from you too.”Logan’s lips pressed together. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he listened—to the breeze, to the distant hum of the estate waking, to the scrape of Kelvin’s movements in the dirt.“This company,” Logan continued, as if starti

Always.Kelvin rose quietly, feet touching the cold floor with practiced care. He moved through the room like someone who had learned long ago how to exist without disturbing the world around him. The warehouse was quiet except for the scratch of graphite, the occasional creak of the metal chair when she shifted, and the low hum of the fluorescent bulb overhead. Gravelly and High-Voice had retreated to the shadows near the door, arms folded, watching her like hawks. CHAPTER 163 – TRUTH IN THE DARKThe van doors swung open with a metallic groan, and cold air rushed in, carrying the sharp scent of pine and damp earth. Her legs buckled the second her feet hit gravel—she hadn’t stood in what felt like forever—and she stumbled forward, knees scraping as someone shoved her upright.“Walk,” Gravelly barked, his grip bruising on her elbow. High-Voice took the other side, steering her blindly across uneven ground. Crunching leaves, a creak of hinges, then concrete under her sneakers. • THE DEVIL ALL ALONG

CHAPTER 162– THE DEVIL ALL ALONGKelvin slammed the door of his beat-up Chevy behind him, the rusty hinges groaning like they were as fed up with life as he was. The neon sign of O’Malley’s Bar flickered above the entrance, casting a sickly red glow on the cracked sidewalk. It was one of those dive spots on the edge of town, the kind where the beer was cheap, the lighting dim, and nobody asked questions. Perfect for a guy like him, nursing a headache and a heartache that wouldn’t quit.He pushed through the heavy wooden door, the stale smell of spilled whiskey and cigarette smoke hitting him like a punch to the gut. The place was half-empty, a few regulars hunched over their drinks at the bar, murmuring low conversations that blended with the crackle of an old jukebox playing some forgotten country tune. Kelvin scanned the room out of habit—old instincts from his days on the force—before sliding onto a stool at the far end. The bartender, a grizzled guy named Lou with a tattoo of a fa
