Chapter 6: THE GUILT
Kelvin's eyes pierced through Diana whose head was bowed in remorse. He could feel her sadness and guilt and though he didn't want to do this anymore, her last word had hit him hard. He hasn't forgotten that Mia was their daughter, and they both had equal rights on her, when he thought of the crying face of his daughter who had pleaded with her mother not to leave her, Kelvin’s heart couldn't help but clench in pain. He swallowed hard, closed his eyes tight, clenched his fist, though he already knew the decision he would make, something inside him wasn't willing, but, his little world, Mia… “She wouldn't be happy, she would cry for her mother, and might even hate me. I can't let her hate me.” Kelvin thought, opened his eyes back, and looked at the woman he had given his whole best to, and let out a resigned sigh which was heard by Diana. Diana immediately raised her head fast, her red pitiful eyes stared at him like her world would collapse if he left her. “This would be the last time I would accept this.” Kelvin's voice said resolvingly. His eyes which looked at the stunned Diana were hard and serious. Diana was shocked when she heard him, she tilted her to the side in deep thought, then her eyes lit up, “Are you saying…?” She asked in doubt. Kelvin looked at her bright face, “Hmm..” he nodded, but widened his eyes the next second when she unexpectedly pounced on him. “Thank you, Kelvin. I can't believe you still choose to believe me..” Diane hugged him tightly and sobbed happily. Kelvin stiffened, his body resisted her hug, and his hands stretched forward to push her away, but her words and sobs stopped him, his brows furrowed, then his hands which he had raised fell to his sides. His head lowered to look at the woman who seemed sincere with her words and after he recalled her reassurance for a change, he let out a sigh and his eyes flashed with helplessness, “I just hope this isn't just for the moment. Because if it was—” He didn't finish his dangerous thoughts and only curled his lips in a cold arc. His hands which were on his sides raised to pat her back gently after he had come to terms with his attitude. “Your birthday is in a few days, let's celebrate it together as a family, I know Mia would want that. Take a break from work on that day. You’ve worked hard and also deserve a break.” Kelvin proposed after he remembered her birthday. Diana hugged him more tightly, “You’re so good. You’ve always been the one who reminds me of my birthday..” She let out a grateful smile, “I’ll take a break on that day and I will spend it with my family like it should be.” Kelvin paused, a smile appeared in his eyes, “How he wished things would continue this way.” *** A few days passed and Kelvin had been observing Diana. His home which had been on a hot plate for so long finally experienced happiness. Kelvin smiled as he watched Diana tickle Mia playfully. The sound of their laughter made his heart bloom and the gloom that had followed him all the while dissipated with the sweet view of his family. His eyes slowly focused on Diana and he couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. He had at first doubted her when she made those promises to him, but as he continued to observe her in the days that followed, he felt satisfied. Diane no longer comes home late, she comes back early and sometimes picks up Mia from kindergarten, comes home and helps with her homework, and sometimes she assists him with the housechores even if it was just her doing the talking and assisting in handing things to him. She also doesn't pick up calls while she is home except it was very important and he hadn't heard her mention Harry anymore, even during the brief important calls she picked once in a while. As he watched the two most important women in his life joke around, he smiled gently and felt fulfilled. Kelvin shifted his gaze away from them and focused on the things he was preparing for Diana’s birthday. Today was Diana’s birthday and he really wanted her to feel happy today. He hadn't placed her promise in his heart as this wasn't the first time she breaks her promise, but she has really adhered to her words, so now, here he was, preparing to set up a candlelight dinner for their family. He had kissed and loved her this morning after she woke up, and though it wasn't deep, he still felt satisfied. How long has he kissed her forehead? As Kelvin bustled around in the house, he turned around and called for both mother and daughter, “Go get dressed!” After hearing them leave the sitting room, he began doing his thing, arranging the table and placing the candles where it was supposed to be. He placed different delicacies which he had prepared by himself lastly, the cake which Diane isn't even aware he had baked and designed for hours. As Kelvin looked at his well-done job, he anticipated the delight on both their faces. After a while, Diane and Mia walked out in simple wear, and truly they were both surprised and excited to see the arrangement, especially Mia who wouldn't stop grinning since she would be having dinner with her parents. After the hug and excitement, the family of three finally sat down closer to each other and readied their utensils to eat their dinner, but… “RING!!” Diana’s phone interrupted the peace on the dining table, and at the same time, both Kelvin and Diana turned their heads to look at the ringing phone but when Kelvin saw the name on the screen, his eyes turned cold. Diana stiffened when she saw the name, “Harry” written boldly on the screen. Her head raised slowly and met the calm gaze of Kelvin which made her panic. She immediately flashed him an awkward smile, then lowered the volume of her phone, “I'm sorry…” She muttered and lowered her head awkwardly. Kelvin pursed his lips, then let out a calm smile, he picked up his utensil again, then parted his lips, “Let's dig in—” Kelvin paused as the vibration of Diane’s phone interrupted him and the name “Harry” still appeared on the screen. Kelvin paused, his eyes flashed with coldness as he watched the phone ring so many times. “Mummy…?” Mia called in confusion with her gaze also on the phone, and this broke the tension in the room. Diana furrowed her brows, picked up her phone and threw Kelvin a glance, “Please, hold on. I’ll pick this call, it might be something urgent.” She said and sat up from the chair. Kelvin’s eyes flashed with irritation, he let out a cold sneer, “Urgent? What does his emergency have to do with you? ” Kelvin asked in a cold tone. Diana's heart felt stuffy, she frowned at the tone of Kelvin, “Well, he’s my employee, and as his boss, it should be of my concern.” She said and didn't wait for him to respond before picking up Harry’s call which had just come in. “Hello, Harry, why do you call?” She asked in a calm tone, but the moment she heard his pitiful and sick voice, her countenance changed. “What?! Your Anxiety popped up?! Oh my goodness! Hold on, I'm on my way to you. Just be okay, Harry! Hold on!” She said anxiously and immediately prepared to walk out. “And where do you think you’re going?!” Diana turned to Kelvin but didn't have the mood or time to notice his anger, her face which was filled with worries looked at him, “Kelvin, Harry is sick right now and he needs me. His anxiety flared up again. I need to go, okay?” Kelvin's heart clenched in anger, “He can call an ambulance, his family and other friends, why did he call you instead?!” his voice was cold. Diana paused, looked at Kelvin with determination, “I’m sorry, Kelvin. He’s sick and I can't leave him be, I think you should understand me.” she sighed frustratedly, “I have to go!”Latest Chapter
THE NAME ON THE DOOR
CHAPTER 167— THE NAME ON THE DOORDiana had learned to recognize power by sound. It wasn’t something business school taught, nor a lesson inherited from her father’s endless monologues on leverage and strategy. This knowledge came from experience—from standing in rooms where she had to earn her place twice over. Power announced itself long before it spoke. It moved ahead of people like a current, bending the atmosphere to its will.It was in the sudden hush when she entered a room. The way heels faltered mid-step, conversations died halfway through a sentence, laughter retreated into tight smiles. It was in the recalibration—voices lowering, spines straightening, assistants moving faster as if time itself had accelerated. Phones silenced too quickly. Chairs pulled back too sharply. Respect disguised as efficiency. This morning, the boardroom at Verdict Crown sounded exactly right. The tension hummed, subtle but unmistakable, confirming her presence without ceremony. Diana crossed the
VERDICT CROWN INDUSTRIES
CHAPTER 166 — VERDICT CROWN INDUSTRIESThe garden did not rush him. That was what Kelvin liked most about it. Nothing here demanded immediate answers. The leaves did not curl if he hesitated. The soil did not harden out of impatience. Everything waited. Everything trusted time.Logan, however, did not.“You’re quiet,” Logan said.Kelvin crouched again, fingers brushing the base of a young plant. He loosened the soil gently, as if the roots might bruise under anything rougher. “I’m thinking.”Patrick shifted behind Logan, adjusting his stance so he wouldn’t cast a shadow too close. He knew better than to interrupt moments like this.“You think too much,” Logan replied. “That’s always been your problem.”Kelvin smiled faintly. “I learned that from you too.”Logan’s lips pressed together. He didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he listened—to the breeze, to the distant hum of the estate waking, to the scrape of Kelvin’s movements in the dirt.“This company,” Logan continued, as if starti
MORNING SOIL
CHAPTER 165 — MORNING SOILKelvin woke before the sun fully decided to rise. The house was still wrapped in that fragile, early-morning hush—when the walls hadn’t yet remembered the noise of the day, when even the clocks seemed hesitant to tick too loudly. Pale light crept through the curtains, thin and cautious, brushing the edges of the room without daring to intrude. He lay still for a moment, staring at the ceiling.Routine came first. Always.Kelvin rose quietly, feet touching the cold floor with practiced care. He moved through the room like someone who had learned long ago how to exist without disturbing the world around him. The mirror caught him briefly—tousled hair, sharp eyes dulled by sleep, a man who carried too much responsibility in his posture even when no one was watching. He didn’t linger. The hallway was dim as he walked toward the smaller bedroom at the end. He opened the door slowly, as if afraid sound itself might shatter something precious. His daughter slept cu
BAIT ON THE LINE
CHAPTER 164 – BAIT ON THE LINELila’s hands shook so badly that the pen scratched uneven lines across the yellow legal pad. The warehouse was quiet except for the scratch of graphite, the occasional creak of the metal chair when she shifted, and the low hum of the fluorescent bulb overhead. Gravelly and High-Voice had retreated to the shadows near the door, arms folded, watching her like hawks. Kelvin sat on the edge of the folding table, legs crossed, reading through the pages she’d already filled as she handed them over one by one.She wrote everything. Every text message she could remember. The exact date Harry slid the first envelope of cash across a diner table in the booth farthest from the window. The burner phone number he’d made her memorize. The script he’d emailed her—lines about how “that night meant something” and how she’d “always wondered if he felt it too.” She even wrote down the name of the shady lab tech Harry knew, the one who’d swapped the samples for two thousand
TRUTH IN THE DARK
CHAPTER 163 – TRUTH IN THE DARKThe van doors swung open with a metallic groan, and cold air rushed in, carrying the sharp scent of pine and damp earth. Rough hands grabbed Lila’s arms, hauling her out like a sack of grain. Her legs buckled the second her feet hit gravel—she hadn’t stood in what felt like forever—and she stumbled forward, knees scraping as someone shoved her upright.“Walk,” Gravelly barked, his grip bruising on her elbow. High-Voice took the other side, steering her blindly across uneven ground. Crunching leaves, a creak of hinges, then concrete under her sneakers. They were going inside somewhere—a building, isolated from the sounds of it. No traffic, no voices, just distant crickets and her own ragged breathing.Doors slammed behind her. Footsteps echoed in a large space—maybe a warehouse? The hood stayed on, darkness absolute. Her heart jackhammered so hard she felt it in her throat. This was it. They were going to kill her. Dump her body where no one would find i
THE DEVIL ALL ALONG
CHAPTER 162– THE DEVIL ALL ALONGKelvin slammed the door of his beat-up Chevy behind him, the rusty hinges groaning like they were as fed up with life as he was. The neon sign of O’Malley’s Bar flickered above the entrance, casting a sickly red glow on the cracked sidewalk. It was one of those dive spots on the edge of town, the kind where the beer was cheap, the lighting dim, and nobody asked questions. Perfect for a guy like him, nursing a headache and a heartache that wouldn’t quit.He pushed through the heavy wooden door, the stale smell of spilled whiskey and cigarette smoke hitting him like a punch to the gut. The place was half-empty, a few regulars hunched over their drinks at the bar, murmuring low conversations that blended with the crackle of an old jukebox playing some forgotten country tune. Kelvin scanned the room out of habit—old instincts from his days on the force—before sliding onto a stool at the far end. The bartender, a grizzled guy named Lou with a tattoo of a fa
