Kai walked under the heavy rain despite his condition and in the heavy rain, his steps came to an abrupt stop when he felt a pain in his chest.

His hand pressed desperately into his head as he tried his best to make sure that he didn't pass out but he was losing the fight.

Just as the pain kept getting intense, he saw the bright lights of cars shine on him and he was astonished when the cars surrounded him.

What is going on? Who are these people?

Just as questions ran through his mind, men started getting out of the car. They had a baseball bat in hand, some of them held a machete and he was taken aback.

They were thugs but what do they want with him?!

The thugs started closing in on Kai, with the leader and second in command on the front while others followed, leering menacingly at Kai.

He could feel their immense bloodlust and he felt like he was being cut down to shreds just by the way they glared daggers at him.

“Look who it is!” The leader said, raising his machete to his shoulder as he laughed maniacally and everyone else joined in.

Kai looked around in surprise and confusion, not understanding what these men wanted with him but one thing he knew for sure was that their intention wasn’t good.

“BREAK HIS ARMS AND LEGS AND CUT OUT HIS TONGUE SO THAT HE WON’T BE ABLE TO SPEAK EVER AGAIN!” The leader yelled out orders.

Kai didn’t have enough time to react as the loud shouts of one of the thugs rang through his ears and in just a blink of an eye, he felt something hit his stomach really hard.

He was sent flying by the thugs, he laid on the floor in pain and shivered, whimpering as he wallowed in the pain that shook his entire being.

The pain was so sharp, so intense that he felt like he was being torn apart. He struggled to breathe and taking one more step was also agonizing.

“Shit! Why now?” Kai said through gritted teeth. He knew that it was his illness flaring up again and he didn’t have the antidote with him.

Covering his mouth as he coughed and the thugs assaulted him, Kai looked at his hand to see blood. His eyes turned, pain rippled from his inside out and he felt like he was going to die.

That was the objective of the thugs after all, they had come to make sure that he died and not to joke around at all.

“You’re meeting your death today, Kai Benson!” The leader of the thugs sneered as his subordinates hit Kai with the baseball bat they were holding.

Kai coughed out blood incessantly, the cold from the heavy downpour on the rain was having a really bad impact on him.

He wanted to fend them off, to try his hardest to put up a fight but he couldn’t raise a finger because his whole body was already engulfed in tides of weariness.

“Do not go easy on him! You go easy on him and I’ll kill you myself!” The thug leader threatened his subordinates and they increased their attacks, beating Kai up until he could barely breathe.

Everything around him looked like they were being turned upside down, his chest palpitate and the pain was so acute that he couldn’t even move forward.

There, Kai felt like his entire body was on fire, the pain was eating at him from the inside. His mouth opened as he writhed but there was no one around to help put him out of his misery or to help him from the thugs, his throat was raw with unuttered shouts for help.

Kai felt his body weakening—he hadn’t taken his medicine for a month. Even without these thugs attacking him, he probably didn’t have much time left.

He spat out a mouthful of blood and stared indifferently at the thugs.

"Before you kill me, at least tell me who sent you."

Kai forced himself to stay calm, but the thugs had no interest in answering him.

"Don't waste time on this sick bastard. Just kill him already!" their leader ordered.

As the thugs closed in, Kai’s survival instinct screamed at him to make one last stand.

"Maybe you can kill me, but you’ll pay the price!" he swore to himself. Clutching a rock hidden in his hand, he resolved to take at least one of them down with him.

"Come on, then!" He watched as the first thug swung a baseball bat at his head. At the same time, he prepared to strike back with his stone.

Just as the bat was about to hit him, a sudden flash of light burst forth—

From the necklace on his chest!

"What the hell?!" the leader recoiled in shock at the sudden glow.

Kai, however, was unfazed. In fact, he felt something he hadn’t in a long time—strength. Ever since his terminal diagnosis, his body had never felt this good!

With newfound power, he swung the rock hard at the thug’s head. The man let out a pained scream and collapsed to the ground.

"Jack! What happened?!" the leader yelled in disbelief. Then his expression twisted with fury. "All of you, kill this bastard!"

The remaining thugs rushed at Kai, armed with bats and knives, intent on ending his life.

But something had changed. In his eyes, their movements seemed ten times slower.

Effortlessly, he dodged an incoming strike and countered with a powerful kick, sending the attacker crashing to the ground. Within moments, three thugs were down. The others hesitated, fear creeping into their expressions.

"B-Boss, something’s wrong with this guy..." one of them muttered.

"Shut up! There’s ten of you! Are you telling me you can’t take down one kid?!"

Kai, however, felt something was off too. His strength was fading. Years of illness, malnutrition, and the abuse from the Benson family had taken a severe toll on his body.

Seeing him start to sway unsteadily, the leader’s face lit up with glee.

"He’s weakening! Get him!"

Realizing Kai was struggling, the thugs charged again. He dodged the first attack but couldn’t avoid the second—

A baseball bat slammed into his shoulder.

"Argh!" Kai cried out in pain, collapsing to the ground.

The thugs grinned cruelly as they closed in.

"Not so tough now, are you?" the leader sneered, watching Kai struggle on the ground like a wounded animal. He waved his hand.

"Finish him!"

"Am I... going to die?" Kai watched as the thugs closed in on him, despair creeping into his heart.

But just then—

A deafening roar of engines echoed from the distance. Blinding headlights pierced through the darkness as a fleet of luxury cars sped toward them.

The leading car screeched to a halt right in front of the thugs.

Stunned, the thugs froze in place, too afraid to make a move.

An elderly man hurriedly stepped out of one of the cars, his voice low and urgent.

“The Life Crystal's signal came from here, didn’t it?” The man asked, his worry, urgency, desperation and determination clear in his voice.

“Yes, it did.” One of the men in black suit responded as the old man anxiously scanned his surroundings, he was determined to find him.

The gang members were intimidated by the presence of the black-clad men and dared not move an inch in fear of what was going to happen to them if they did.

“Who are you?” Kai asked, his expression was cold as his brows drew together in a frown, “you’re not here to cause me trouble too, are you?” He added.

On hearing Kai’s voice, the old man lifted his head to look at Kai and it was at that moment that he spotted the necklace around Kai’s neck.

The old man’s eyes widened in shock, there’s no mistake, that is definitely the necklace. In an instant, he strode forward with excitement, his entire being shaking with delight as he held Kai.

“I've finally found you—my grandson!”

Time sped up so fast as they all enjoyed their company, Kai was conflicted, he contemplated telling the guys about what had happened with Catherine, and what he saw last night, but at the same time he didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere.“Kai?” Lorenzo called when he noticed just how deep in thought that Kai had gotten. He was telling her that she could indulge as much as she wanted and he would always be there not to judge her, but to make sure she’s enjoying herself.“I was just kidding,” Catherine laughed, the butterflies in her stomach fluttering around. “If I ate that much, I’d weigh about 6 million pounds.” She laughed.Kai laughed too before his expression turned serious. “Then I’d have to train my arms and body so that I can lift you up anywhere.”Catherine was enjoying herself so much that she was starting to feel like she was doing something wrong. She laughed wholeheartedly, she was happy, and everything was going so well, until….“Oh, look who it is.” Catherine turned in the direction of the voice the moment she saw Kai’s happiness veered quickly to sadness and then anger. The switch was too quick.
