Stealing Years from a Tyrant
last update2026-10-30 18:10:59

The monochromatic grey domain remained frozen in place. Floating droplets of spilled wine, suspended glass shards, and the wide-eyed, terrified faces of five hundred immobilized nobles surrounded them like a museum of stone statues.

Inside the quiet center of the stasis field, Valerius whimpered, clutching his broken wrist against his ribs. The curved obsidian dagger trembled in Caelen’s left hand, its flat, cool edge resting flush against the silver-haired Director’s trembling carotid artery.

"You're a monster..." Valerius rasped, his breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. "You aren't human... nothing survives a Zero-Hour Stasis field... nothing!"

"I'm a surgeon, Valerius," Caelen said, his voice flat, icy, and devoid of tremor. "And you are a malignant growth on this city. Surgery is simple: you isolate the diseased tissue, and you remove it."

Caelen didn't cut the man's throat. Instead, he pressed his thumb firmly against the pressure point on the side of Valerius’s neck, activating his Diagnostic Eye at point-blank range.

A surge of blinding crimson light erupted from Caelen’s eyes, illuminating the dark, stagnant life-force lines within Valerius’s body.

[ CRIMES EVALUATED: Intentional Bio-hazard Deployment, Mass Poisoning of 500 Freshmen, Unauthorized Use of Imperial Stasis Artifact ]

Above Valerius’s head, the lingering golden counter—[ 132 Years : 08 Months : 12 Days ]—began to vibrate violently. The glowing glyphs cracked like shattered glass.

"No... NO!" Valerius shrieked, realization dawning on him. "My years! You can't take them! My family spent three generations accumulating that capital!"

"Your family stole it," Caelen growled. "I'm just executing the refund."

THUMP.

A sound like a heavy brass bell echoing through an empty cathedral shuddered through the stasis field. A torrent of brilliant, liquid-gold light ruptured from Valerius’s forehead, streaming through the grey air and coiling around Caelen’s arm like a burning serpent.

The energy flooded into Caelen's chest. His lungs expanded with effortless power. The microscopic scars in his tissue vanished, his bones hardened, and his perception of time broadened until every micro-second felt like an eternity.

Above Valerius’s head, the numbers plummeted in a blinding downward spiral:

[ 100 Years... 50 Years... 10 Years... 1 Year... 00 Days : 00 Hours ]

Valerius’s body withered at a terrifying speed. His silver hair fell out in clumps, fluttering into grey dust before hitting the floor. His skin dried into brittle, paper-thin parchment, pulling tight over hollow cheekbones and skeletal eye sockets. The luxurious velvet mantle collapsed around a frame that had aged eighty years in eight seconds.

[ 00 Years : 00 Months : 00 Days : 00 Hours : 12 Seconds ]

"P-please..." a paper-thin, raspy whisper escaped the dying man’s sunken lips. "Leave me... one hour..."

Caelen released his grip. Valerius collapsed into a heap of empty robes on the marble floor, his ancient, rheumy eyes staring blankly at the ceiling as his final twelve seconds ticked away.

Above Caelen’s head, his own counter absorbed the massive influx of life-force, exploding with a brilliant, golden light that burned away the grey stasis field:

[ 142 Years : 01 Month : 10 Days : 18 Hours ]

CRACK!

The silver stasis artifact in the center of the room shattered into fine grey dust.

The monochromatic wave dissolved. Sound, color, and motion violently flooded back into the Grand Atrium.

Clatter!

Scream!

The hanging wine glasses smashed against the floor. The plumes of steam billowed upward. The five hundred nobles gasped in unison, stumbling as time resumed its normal flow.

"My hand—I can move!"

"What happened?!"

"Look at the Director!"

A collective shriek of horror echoed through the ballroom as the nobles looked toward the dais.

Dr. Valerius Sterling lay in a withered, ancient pile of rags at Caelen’s feet. His skin was gray, his eyes milky, his chest still. Above his head, his counter read a hollow, flickering [ 00 : 00 : 00 ]. A puff of faint gray ash drifted from his mouth as his body began the rapid, natural disintegration of a zero-hour vessel.

Standing over him was Caelen Voss. His leather coat billowed lightly in the air currents of the hall. Glowing above his forehead was a majestic, blinding counter of 142 Years—a figure fit for a High Chancellor of the Upper District.

Officer Lyra Vance gasped, taking a instinctual step back as she stared at Caelen in shock. She looked at her own trembling hands, then at the gray ash settling over the dais, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"He... he liquidated him..." a noble elder whispered from the front row, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "He drained a Chief Director to zero in a second!"

"He didn't drain him," Lyra called out, her voice regaining its razor-sharp authority as she stepped to the front of the dais and drew her rapier, pointing the glowing blue blade toward the remaining Siphon Guards. "The Chrono-System executed a sentence for high treason and attempted murder of five hundred noble heirs!"

The thirty Siphon Guards looked at the pile of ash that used to be their employer, then at Caelen’s terrifying 142-year counter, and finally at Officer Vance’s steel-eyed resolve.

One by one, they dropped their glowing energy pikes to the floor with heavy, metallic clatters.

"Guards of the Bureau!" Lyra ordered her twelve Enforcement soldiers. "Seize all wine casks, lock the Atrium doors, and secure the perimeter! No member of the Poison Guild escapes this spire tonight!"

"Sir!" the guards roared, moving swiftly to execute her commands.

Caelen didn't pay attention to the chaos unfolding in the ballroom. He knelt beside the empty velvet robes of Valerius, reaching into the inner lining. His fingers closed around a small, iron-bound ledger sealed with black wax—the master distribution list of the Poison Guild's regional operations.

He stood up, wiping his hands on a linen napkin, and tucked the ledger into his coat.

Lyra walked up beside him, her rapier held at her side. She looked down at the empty robes, then up at Caelen’s calm, unbothered face.

"You just executed the heir to the Sterling Time-Bank in front of half the Upper District, Voss," she said softly. "The High Council will have full strike teams deployed within the hour."

"Let them deploy," Caelen replied, turning toward the side exit leading to the private service stairwells. "Sterling was just the distributor, Lyra. The manufacturing bio-labs are located in the Lower Precinct's deep sewers—where they're already brewing enough Chrono-Rot to infect the entire city by next week."

Lyra looked at the grand ballroom, where frightened nobles were screaming for medical evaluations, then back at Caelen's dark, resolute eyes.

"You aren't going back to hide in your basement, are you?" she asked.

Caelen paused at the iron service door, a cold, razor-sharp smile cutting across his face.

"Hide? No, Officer," Caelen said. "I'm opening a clinic in the slums. And my first order of business is cleaning out the parasites."

  • Caelen’s movement was a blur of brutal, clinical efficiency
