The Descent into Sector 9

The heavy iron service door clicked shut behind them, instantly cutting off the hysterical screams of the Upper District nobles and the bright, artificial glare of the Grand Atrium.

Caelen led the way down a spiral stone stairwell that plunged deep into the structural spine of the spire. The air turned rapidly cold and damp, shifting from the fragrant scents of lavender and roasted meats to the sharp, metallic stench of ozone, sewage, and unrefined mana-discharge.

Lyra Vance matched his long stride, her boots ringing against the iron steps. Behind them, two of her most trusted Enforcement lieutenants—Harrow and Kael—followed silently, their halberds slung low and their eyes darting into the flickering shadows cast by the wall-mounted gas torches.

"I sent the rest of the squad back to the Bureau with the wine samples and the Siphon Guards' weapons," Lyra said, her voice echoing softly against the damp stone. "By now, the High Council has received word of Sterling's execution. They’ll freeze his personal assets within twenty minutes, but his family's private security force won't sit idle."

"Let them count their losses," Caelen said without looking back. He adjusted his leather satchel, feeling the hard edges of the iron-bound Poison Guild ledger resting against his ribs. "Without Sterling to authorize their medical permits, the Siphon Guards have no legal standing to operate in the lower sectors. Their priority will be hiding their bio-labs before the Imperial Health Inquisition catches wind of what happened in that ballroom."

"And if the Inquisition is already on their payroll?" Harrow, the burly lieutenant, asked grimly from behind. "The High Guild hasn't operated a clandestine poisoning ring for decades without buying off the inspectors."

"Then we don't rely on the Inquisition," Caelen replied coolly. "We rely on the people who are dying."

They reached the base of the spire staircase, emerging through a rust-caked pressure valve door into Sector 9—the heart of the Lower Precinct's sprawling industrial slums.

The contrast was brutal.

Above them, the glittering glass underbelly of the Upper Spire hung like a distant, unreachable starfield, casting a cold, purplish haze over the narrow alleyways below. Ground-level streets were crammed with rusted iron shanties, leaking steam pipes, and hundreds of impoverished citizens huddled around burning oil drums.

Floating above the heads of the slum dwellers was a bleak, miserable sea of pale red and flickering amber timers: [ 03 Days : 11 Hours ], [ 18 Hours : 42 Minutes ], [ 00 Days : 04 Hours ].

Here in Sector 9, time was not hoarded in centuries—it was scraped together hour by hour through backbreaking labor in the steam-conduits or wagers in the underground pit-arenas.

"Look at their counters," Lyra whispered, her jaw tightening as she observed a young mother cradling a coughing child whose forehead read a horrifying [ 02 Hours : 15 Minutes ]. "The decay rate in this sector is twice as fast as the official census reports."

"It's not natural decay," Caelen said, stopping at the mouth of an alley. He activated his Diagnostic Eye, letting the faint crimson grid sweep over the huddled families around the oil drum.

Caelen’s eyes narrowed as he traced the glowing purple gas lines pulsating beneath the cobbled streets. The Poison Guild hadn't just tested their Nightshade toxin on isolated individuals—they had tapped the main ventilation lines of the lower slums, slowly venting low-dose Chrono-Rot into the residential air supply for months.

It was a perpetual harvesting machine. By keeping the slum population perpetually on the verge of expiration, the local Guild clinics could charge exorbitant fees for temporary "anti-rot" injections, systematically leeching every spare hour the workers earned.

"They aren't just selling poison," Caelen growled softly, his fingers curling into fists inside his coat pockets. "They're farming human beings."

"Doctor..." Lyra laid a hand on his forearm, pointing toward the far end of the market square. "We have company."

A group of seven men dressed in heavy leather coats and iron-plated face masks stepped out from behind a line of rusted steam-boilers. Each man carried a heavy, pneumatic time-siphon gun—slum-grade weapons designed to violently tear life-span currency from victims through physical contact.

Above the lead thug's head floated a ragged, deep-red counter: [ 14 Years : 08 Months ].

"Well, well," the lead thug rasped, his voice distorted through his iron mask as he leveled his siphon gun directly at Caelen's chest. "Look what dropped out of the Upper Spire. Fancy clothes, an Enforcement Officer... and a golden counter bright enough to blind a man."

The thugs fanned out, surrounding Caelen’s small group in the narrow alley.

"Officer Vance," the thug leader sneered, ignoring Lyra's drawn rapier. "You're out of your jurisdiction down here in the Iron Market. This sector belongs to the Bone-Saws. Leave the doctor and your gold counters, and maybe we let you march your pretty boots back to the station."

Lyra didn't argue. She didn't issue a warning. Her storm-gray eyes flashed with cold, lethal precision as her blade ignited with a blinding blue mana-aura.

"You're standing in front of a doctor, trash," Lyra said coldly. "And his schedule is full."

Before the lead thug could pull his pneumatic trigger, Caelen stepped forward, his kinetic vision accelerating the world around him into a motionless crawl.

He didn't draw a blade. He reached straight into his satchel, grabbed a heavy silver arterial clamp, and lunged.
