The Slaughterhouse Refinery

The rain falling over Pier 4 was not water; it was a slick, greasy drizzle mixed with industrial soot and coal dust. It coated the rusted corrugated iron of the old slaughterhouse in a dull, black sheen.

Caelen stood in the shadow of a derailed freight car, wiping a droplet of dark rainwater from his jaw. Beside him, Lyra Vance lowered her optical binoculars, her face grim.

"The perimeter is heavily seeded with pressurized pressure mines," Lyra reported, her voice hushed beneath the groan of the nearby river locks. "I count eight guards on the catwalks carrying heavy military-grade siphon rifles, and the main doors are reinforced with class-3 stasis seals. This isn't a factory, Voss. It's a military fortress."

"A fortress built over a sewer line," Caelen corrected softly.

He activated his Diagnostic Eye, letting the faint red grid expand across the dark structure. The wooden walls and iron beams faded in his vision, replaced by a glowing blueprint of the biological hazard within.

Deep beneath the concrete foundation lay three massive, spherical iron vats. Inside them, thousands of gallons of dark, viscous liquid bubbled under pressure. Glowing purple veins of Chrono-Rot gas snaked upward from the vats, feeding directly into the municipal ventilation pipes that supplied Sector 9, Sector 10, and the lower residential quarters.

[ LOCATION: Clandestine Poison Guild Bio-Refinery ]

[ CONTAINER STATUS: 3 x High-Pressure Storage Tanks (Chrono-Rot Strain C) ]

[ PRODUCTION CAPACITY: 5,000 Liters / Hour ]

[ STRUCTURAL WEAKNESS: Secondary pressure-relief valve on Tank 2 (Corroded manifold) ]

[ INFECTION RISK: Extreme ]

"They’re running three vats at full capacity," Caelen said, pointing toward the heavy brass steam pipes running along the river embankment. "If those vats reach maximum pressure during the midnight shift, the automated valves will flush twenty percent of the unrefined residue directly into the river water supply."

"That would poison the entire southern slum district by morning," Lyra whispered, her hand instinctively dropping to her rapier hilt. "Over fifty thousand people."

"Which means we don't have time to wait for Bureau reinforcements," Caelen said, checking his leather kit. "We breach now."

"Voss, there are eight snipers on those catwalks," Lieutenant Kael warned, his halberd held tight. "If we step onto that open mud, they’ll turn us into swiss cheese before we hit the door."

"They're watching the mud," Caelen replied, a faint, razor-sharp smile cutting across his face. "They aren't watching the intake pipes."

He pointed down toward the riverbank, where a massive, iron-grated drainage pipe discharged a steady stream of tepid, chemical-laced runoff into the black river.

Five minutes later, they were inside the belly of the beast.

The drainage pipe led them directly into the sub-basement beneath the slaughterhouse floor. The air was suffocatingly hot, thick with the stench of boiling copper, sulfur, and rotting meat. Above their heads, the heavy wooden floorboards creaked under the weight of patrolling boots and the rhythmic thump-thump-thump of industrial pressure pumps.

Caelen led the way through the narrow, steam-filled drainage catwalk, his dark eyes scanning the overhead pipes.

[ TARGET DETECTED: Master Pressure Manifold (Tank 2) ]

[ MATERIAL: Cast Iron (Corroded) ]

[ INTERNAL PRESSURE: 420 PSI (CRITICAL) ]

"Stop," Caelen signaled with a raised hand.

They halted in the shadow of a massive iron pillar. Twenty feet ahead, standing on a raised metal platform above the boiling vats, were three men in white hazard suits and heavy leather aprons. They were monitoring a bank of brass pressure gauges, typing commands into a central mana-console.

Standing between the vats was a man who did not wear a hazard suit.

He was tall, painfully thin, and dressed in a tailored black coat embroidered with a silver needle piercing an hourglass—the high-ranking emblem of the Poison Guild's inner circle. His skin was unnaturally pale, almost translucent, and his fingers were long, metallic, and tipped with needle-sharp silver claws.

High Alchemist Malakor.

Above Malakor’s head, a deep, blood-red counter burned with alarming brilliance:

[ 88 Years : 03 Months : 14 Days ]

"Increase the valve output by fifteen percent," Malakor commanded, his voice a dry, rasping hiss like dead leaves scraping across concrete. "Director Sterling failed his assignment in the Upper District. The High Council requires immediate liquidation of the lower sectors to offset our financial losses."

"Sir," one of the alchemists warned, looking at a vibrating gauge. "Tank 2 is already at critical pressure. If we force the output, the manifold will rupture!"

"Then let it rupture," Malakor sneered, his silver claws clicking together with a sickening metallic sound. "The workers in this sector are cattle. If ten thousand of them die tonight, their lifespans will automatically route into our regional recovery vaults. We don't need Sterling's political games anymore. We take the harvest by force."

"A very passionate speech," a cool, clinical voice echoed from the shadows behind the main iron pillar. "Too bad your engineering is as sloppy as your ethics."

Malakor whipped his head around. "Who's there?!"

Caelen stepped out into the harsh glare of the furnace light, his leather coat open, his hands casually resting in his pockets. Behind him, Officer Lyra Vance and her two lieutenants stepped onto the metal catwalk, their weapons drawn and ready.

Malakor’s eyes widened, his silver claws twitching in disbelief as he locked sight on Caelen’s glowing forehead.

"Caelen Voss..." Malakor hissed, a mixture of shock and dark amusement twisting his pale face. "The rogue professor who drained Valerius... I thought you would be hiding in a cellar, waiting for the High Council to hunt you down."

"I don't hide from amateur chemists," Caelen said, taking a slow, measured step forward along the narrow metal gantry. "You call yourself a High Alchemist, yet you're running cast-iron pressure lines at 420 PSI with a secondary valve that has a three-inch stress fracture right behind the main flange."

Malakor flinched, his eyes darting instinctively toward the vibrating manifold above Tank 2.

"You're insane," Malakor growled, his hand creeping toward a red lever on the central console. "Guards! Kill them! Throw their bodies into the boiling vat!"

Four heavy doors along the upper catwalks burst open. A dozen elite Poison Guild mercenaries clad in heavy iron armor and wielding pressurized venom-throwers rushed onto the platforms, aiming their weapons down at Caelen's group.

"Voss!" Lyra yelled, raising her rapier as her blade ignited with a fierce, blinding blue aura. "We're surrounded!"

"Don't shoot the guards," Caelen said calmly, pulling his heavy silver fountain pen casing from his pocket. "Shoot the valve."

Before Malakor or his mercenaries could react, Caelen’s kinetic vision accelerated the world around him.

He didn't aim at the mercenaries. He threw the heavy silver pen casing with god-tier precision, striking the exact three-inch stress fracture on the corroded cast-iron manifold above Tank 2.

BANG!

The manifold exploded like a artillery shell.

A torrent of superheated, pressurized Chrono-Rot steam erupted from the ruptured pipe, blasting across the upper catwalks. The heavy iron mercenaries shrieked as the boiling toxic gas enveloped them, their armor offering zero protection against the pressurized thermal shock. They tumbled off the platforms, splashing uselessly into the drainage channels below.

"My vats!" Malakor shrieked, shielding his face with his heavy sleeves as steam filled the cavernous chamber.

Through the roaring cloud of white steam, a dark figure surged forward with terrifying speed.

Caelen burst through the vapor, his dark eyes glowing crimson. Before Malakor could raise his silver claws, Caelen grabbed the alchemist by his throat, slamming him backward against the boiling hot iron wall of Tank 1.

Sizzzle!

Malakor screamed in agony as the heat burned through his tailored coat. He raised his right hand, driving his silver claw blades directly toward Caelen’s eyes!

Grab.

Caelen caught Malakor’s wrist mid-air with his left hand, his grip like a vice of cold steel.

[ TARGET DETECTED: High Alchemist Malakor ]

[ DIAGNOSIS: Chronic Systemic Mercury Toxicity & Bio-Venom Backflow ]

[ IMPENDING DEATH: 12 Hours ]

[ SYSTEMIC PENALTY: Mass Bio-hazard Production & Attempted Genocide ]

"You..." Malakor wheezed, his pale eyes bulging with raw, unadulterated terror as he felt the mysterious, ancient force inside Caelen's bloodline locking onto his life force. "What... what are you?!"

"I'm the doctor who's revoking your license," Caelen whispered softly.

[ ABSORBING LIFE-SPAN CURRENCY... ]

A violent, blinding surge of crimson light erupted from Malakor’s chest, streaming into Caelen’s body. The alchemist’s 88-year counter shattered like glass, dropping to zero in three terrifying seconds as his body withered into a dry, hairless husk.

Above Caelen’s head, his golden counter surged once more, burning with the light of a miniature sun:

[ 230 Years : 04 Months : 24 Days : 11 Hours ]

Malakor’s empty robes collapsed onto the metal floor.

Caelen stood in the rising steam, his coat fanning out around him, his dark eyes sweeping over the quiet, ruin-filled refinery.

Lyra lowered her rapier, her chest heaving as she stared at Caelen’s massive 230-year counter in absolute awe and terror.

"Voss..." she breathed, her voice barely audible over the roaring steam pipes. "You... you just took an entire century..."

Caelen didn't answer right away. He walked over to the central console, pulled out a glass master-vial containing the pure, unrefined pathogen sample, and sealed it in his satchel. Then, he grabbed the emergency pressure-release valve, pulling it down with all his strength.

HIIIIIISSSSSS!

The master safety vents opened across the roof of the slaughterhouse, dumping neutralizing alkali solution into the vats and rendering the thousands of gallons of poison completely inert.

Caelen turned back to Lyra, his face calm, sharp, and completely composed.

"The refinery is neutralized," Caelen said, adjusting his collar. "Now, Officer Vance... let's go open that clinic in the slums."
