Caelen’s movement was a blur of brutal, clinical efficiency

Before the lead thug's brain could register the shift in posture, Caelen closed the distance, drove the rigid steel tip of the arterial clamp into the man's exposed brachial plexus beneath his right shoulder, and twisted.

Snap!

The thug let out a strangled shriek as his right arm went instantly numb. The pneumatic time-siphon gun clattered onto the wet cobblestones.

Without breaking momentum, Caelen caught the falling weapon with his left hand, reversed his grip, and slammed the heavy iron butt of the gun into the leader's jaw. Bone cracked, and the man crumpled into the mud, unconscious before he hit the ground.

"Shoot them!" one of the remaining Bone-Saws screamed, raising a crude steam-pressured dart gun.

He never got the chance.

Lyra moved like liquid lightning. Her rapier whistled through the damp fog, its glowing blue aura leaving a trail of searing light. With three lightning-fast thrusts, she shattered the pressure valves on two thugs' weapons, sending scalding steam spraying into their faces. They collapsed to their knees, howling in agony as they clutched their blistering skin.

Behind her, Harrow and Kael executed a textbook Enforcement wedge. Their heavy halberds swept out in synchronized arcs, the blunt ends smashing into knee joints and solar plexuses with bone-shattering force.

In less than twelve seconds, all seven thugs lay groaning in the mud of the Iron Market square.

Caelen didn't even drop his arterial clamp. He stood over the groaning thug leader, pressing his boot firmly onto the man's chest while his Diagnostic Eye swept over his face.

[ TARGET DETECTED: Bone-Saw Lieutenant ]

[ DIAGNOSIS: Advanced Chrono-Rot Poisoning (Stage 2) ]

[ CAUSE: Inhalation of raw bio-refinery exhaust ]

[ IMPENDING COLLAPSE: 18 Hours ]

"You're coughing up black phlegm every twenty minutes, aren't you?" Caelen asked, looking down at the groaning man with cold, analytical eyes. "Your ribs burn when you breathe the night air, and your leader tells you it's just 'slum-fever.'"

The thug leader looked up through his cracked visor, his bloodshot eyes wide with terror. "How... how do you know that?"

"Because your bosses at the Poison Guild are using you as living filter paper," Caelen said, leaning down until his dark eyes were inches from the man's mask. "They have you guarding the ventilation shafts of the bio-refinery, inhaling the unrefined exhaust while they sell you cheap anti-rot shots that keep you hooked like dogs."

He pulled the black Poison Guild ledger from his coat, flipping open the heavy iron-bound cover.

"Tell me where the central intake valve for Sector 9 is located," Caelen commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Or I'll let that Stage 2 rot in your lungs finish its job by tomorrow morning."

The thug swallowed hard, staring at Caelen's dark face, then at the glowing 142-year counter burning bright above the doctor's forehead.

"The... the abandoned boiler plant under Pier 4..." the thug wheezed out, his spirit completely broken. "Behind the iron slaughterhouse... there's a pressure door marked with a red cross... please... give me the shot..."

"I don't give out temporary shots," Caelen said, standing up and dusting off his coat. "I eliminate the disease."

He turned toward the dark alley leading toward Pier 4, gesturing for Lyra and her men to follow.

"Harrow, tie these men up and leave them for the precinct patrol," Lyra ordered, wiping her rapier blade clean with a cloth before sheathing it. She stepped up beside Caelen, her gray eyes glinting in the dark street. "Pier 4 is right along the river. If they're piping Chrono-Rot through the old drainage tunnels, they can contaminate the entire Lower District's water supply by sunrise."

"Then we don't have time for a standard siege," Caelen said, pulling a pair of fresh surgical gloves from his pocket and snapping them onto his hands.

He looked toward the looming silhouette of the rusted slaughterhouse in the distance, a razor-sharp smile cutting across his face.

"It's time to perform an emergency amputation on the Poison Guild."

The neutralizing alkali solution hissed as it surged through the stainless-steel pipes, converting the remaining thousands of gallons of raw Chrono-Rot into a harmless, chalky sludge. Thick clouds of harmless white steam billowed out of the slaughterhouse roof vents, dissipating harmlessly into the cold, rainy night sky above Pier 4.Inside the cavernous sub-basement, the silence was deafening. The heavy iron pumps had ground to a complete halt. High Alchemist Malakor’s empty black robes lay limp on the metal catwalk, surrounded by tiny flecks of grey dust.Officer Lyra Vance stood motionless near the main valve, her right hand still gripping the pommel of her rapier. The rain falling over Pier 4 was not water; it was a slick, greasy drizzle mixed with industrial soot and coal dust. It coated the rusted corrugated iron of the old slaughterhouse in a dull, black sheen.Caelen stood in the shadow of a derailed freight car, wiping a droplet of dark rainwater from his jaw. Beside him, Lyra Vance lowered her optical binoculars, her face grim."The perimeter is heavily seeded with pressurized pressure mines," Lyra reported, her voice hushed beneath the groan of the nearby river locks. "I count eight guards on the catwalks carrying heavy military-grade siphon rifles, and the main doors are reinforced with class-3 stasis seals. This isn't a factory, Voss. It's a military fortress.""A fortress built over a sewer line," Caelen corrected softly. He activated his Diagnostic Eye, letting the faint red grid expand across the dark structure. The wooden walls and iron beams faded in his vision, replaced by a glowing blueprint of the biological hazard within.Deep

  • The Descent into Sector 9

The heavy iron service door clicked shut behind them, instantly cutting off the hysterical screams of the Upper District nobles and the bright, artificial glare of the Grand Atrium.Caelen led the way down a spiral stone stairwell that plunged deep into the structural spine of the spire. The air turned rapidly cold and damp, shifting from the fragrant scents of lavender and roasted meats to the sharp, metallic stench of ozone, sewage, and unrefined mana-discharge.Lyra Vance matched his long stride, her boots ringing against the iron steps. Behind them, two of her most trusted Enforcement lieutenants—Harrow and Kael—followed silently, their halberds slung low and their eyes darting into the flickering shadows cast by the wall-mounted gas torches."I sent the rest of the squad back to the Bureau with the wine samples and the Siphon Guards' weapons," Lyra said, her voice echoing softly against the damp stone. "By now, the High Council has received word of Sterling's execution. They’ll f

The monochromatic grey domain remained frozen in place. Floating droplets of spilled wine, suspended glass shards, and the wide-eyed, terrified faces of five hundred immobilized nobles surrounded them like a museum of stone statues.Inside the quiet center of the stasis field, Valerius whimpered, clutching his broken wrist against his ribs. The curved obsidian dagger trembled in Caelen’s left hand, its flat, cool edge resting flush against the silver-haired Director’s trembling carotid artery."You're a monster..." Valerius rasped, his breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. "You aren't human... nothing survives a Zero-Hour Stasis field... nothing!""I'm a surgeon, Valerius," Caelen said, his voice flat, icy, and devoid of tremor. "And you are a malignant growth on this city. Surgery is simple: you isolate the diseased tissue, and you remove it."Caelen didn't cut the man's throat. Instead, he pressed his thumb firmly against the pressure point on the side of Valerius’s neck, activa

Her twelve Enforcement guards checked their halberds in unison, snapping energy cells into place with heavy metallic clicks."We have three minutes before we reach the Grand Atrium," Lyra said softly, her eyes fixed on the rising floor indicator.
