Everyone in the fortress had expected Darius Veyne to come back dead.

Some had even hoped for it.

Yet, in the middle of the afternoon, the doors of the fortress opened, and the boy everyone had already counted as dead walked out alive.

The warriors gathered outside fell silent.

Darius didn't acknowledge them.

He simply walked forward.

His clothes were still stained from the Black Reach, and beneath the exhaustion in his eyes was something none of them could understand.

He had survived a mission that should have killed him.

Again.

But he had failed to awaken.

Again.

“How the hell did he survive?” one warrior muttered. “That kid was hit by a Grade 2 Enhancer.”

“Did he at least finally awaken?”

“Doubt it.”

Another warrior scoffed.

“Even if he survived, nothing has changed. He's still useless without an ability.”

Darius heard every word.

He didn't react.

He had heard worse.

For seventeen years, people had whispered about him behind his back.

The failed heir.

The useless descendant.

The boy who couldn't awaken.

The burden of House Veyne.

Normally, their words would have stayed with him.

Today, they barely registered.

Because Darius had a different problem.

He couldn't stop thinking about what had happened inside the Black Reach.

The darkness.

The blood.

The strange chamber.

And the voice.

You were made for this.

His hand slowly tightened.

He still didn't know what those words meant.

But something inside him had changed.

And whatever it was, he intended to find out.

Darius continued toward the waiting carriage.

Nearby, a captain in deep black armor watched him approach.

His angular face remained expressionless, but his narrowed eyes betrayed his irritation.

Varek Veyne.

Captain of the escort unit.

The moment he received news that Darius had survived, Varek had felt his hopes disappear.

He had thought the Black Reach would finally solve his problem.

Instead, the useless heir had returned.

Alive.

Again.

Varek's fingers tightened around the reins.

He had already lost countless opportunities because of Darius.

Every time the boy was sent on a dangerous mission, Varek and his unit were ordered to escort him.

The reason was simple.

Darius was a direct descendant of House Veyne.

And despite his failure to awaken, the family still considered his bloodline valuable.

Varek considered it a waste.

While he was forced to protect Darius, stronger warriors were taking the missions that could have advanced his own power.

His resentment had become difficult to hide.

“Enough.”

His growl silenced the warriors around him.

Darius finally reached the carriage.

Varek and the others bowed slightly.

“Young Master.”

There was respect in the words.

None in the tone.

Darius didn't answer.

He didn't even look at Varek.

He simply walked past him.

Nyx opened the carriage door.

Darius stepped inside.

Nyx followed and closed the door behind them.

Varek stared at the carriage.

That worthless failure.

He wanted nothing more than to stop wasting his time on Darius.

But he couldn't.

Darius was still a direct descendant.

And in House Veyne, there was an old rule.

Only a direct descendant could openly touch another direct descendant.

Anyone else who crossed that line without permission was asking for a brutal death.

Varek looked away.

“We're leaving.”

He pulled the reins.

Four enormous Equitaras spread their wings.

The evolved beasts were covered in hardened muscle, their massive talons digging into the ground.

Then they launched into the sky.

The carriage followed.

Inside, Darius sat silently.

He looked down at the fortress as it became smaller beneath them.

His fist clenched.

I failed again.

He had gone into the Black Reach hoping that this would finally be the mission that awakened him.

He had fought Darkness creatures.

He had been surrounded by Vita.

He had come close to death.

Yet nothing had happened.

No ability.

No evolution.

Nothing.

But Darius knew something the others didn't.

He hadn't returned completely unchanged.

His fingers moved toward his chest.

For a brief moment, warmth appeared beneath his skin.

Darius froze.

The sensation vanished.

His eyes narrowed.

What was that?

His mind immediately returned to the nightmare.

His mother.

The darkness.

The ancient voice.

The black symbol.

You finally returned.

You were made for this.

Darius had no idea what it meant.

But he was beginning to suspect something terrifying.

Maybe his failure to awaken had never been a failure.

Maybe something had been waiting inside him all along.

He turned toward the window.

The fortress disappeared behind them.

Beyond it stretched the enormous territory protected by the Dome.

One-third of Earth had been swallowed by the Dome after the Fall, covering approximately 170 million square kilometers.

It stretched across parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including territories that had once belonged to North America, Europe, and Asia.

The old world was gone.

The skyscrapers, highways, airports, and cities that had once filled the land had either collapsed or been abandoned.

Humanity had rebuilt differently.

Walls replaced borders.

Fortresses replaced cities.

Awakened warriors replaced armies.

And the twelve great bloodlines controlled the strongest territories.

House Veyne ruled a large portion of the western region.

Despite its fertile soil and relatively stable climate, much of the land remained uninhabited because of the Darkness creatures that roamed beyond the protected settlements.

The safer regions had become humanity's main source of food.

But House Veyne was not a family of farmers.

They were warriors.

For centuries, their descendants had fought to expand their territory and protect their people.

Darius stared at the land below.

His mind returned to the Black Reach.

He had survived.

He had bathed in Vita.

He had fought creatures that should have been far beyond his level.

And somehow, he still hadn't awakened.

His fingers tightened around the armrest.

For years, he had told himself it was only a matter of time.Maybe tomorrow.

Maybe during his next battle.

Maybe when death finally pushed him far enough.

But now he wasn't sure.

The sun slowly began to disappear beyond the horizon.

By nightfall, the carriage finally approached one of the western cities under House Veyne's control.

Ironhold.

Massive walls surrounded the city.

Watchtowers rose above them, while defensive weapons lined the battlements.

Thousands of lights shone beyond the gates.

Darius stared at the city.

Home.

Or at least, the place everyone expected him to call home.

His expression remained calm.

Then the warmth beneath his skin returned.

This time, it didn't disappear.

A faint pulse came from his chest.

Darius's eyes widened.

A voice echoed inside his mind.

[Devouring Core synchronization: 1%.]

His breathing stopped.

The carriage continued toward Ironhold.

But Darius no longer cared about the city.

For the first time, he realized the truth.

His awakening hadn't failed.

It had only just begun.
