The forest exploded with noise.

Something crashed through the trees behind them, sending branches flying. The ground shook beneath Darius's feet.

His mother tightened her grip around him and ran faster.

“Mother… what's happening?”

She didn't answer.

Blood ran down the side of her face, but she kept moving until they reached the clearing.

Darius froze.

Bodies covered the ground.

Broken weapons lay scattered among the dead. Their carriage had been destroyed, its wooden frame burning at the edge of the clearing.

“Where is Father?”

His mother looked at him.

There was fear in her eyes.

Not for herself.

For him.

“There are people coming for you,” she whispered.

“Who?”

“They know about you.”

Another explosion sounded in the distance.

“They're close.”

“Then let's run.”

“We can't.”

“Why?”

She knelt and placed both hands on his shoulders.

“Because they won't stop.”

Darius stared at her.

“They aren't here to kill us.”

Her voice became quieter.

“They're here for you.”

“If they find you, they'll take you. They won't kill you, Darius.”

She swallowed.

“That's what I'm afraid of.”

“Then take me with you.”

His mother closed her eyes.

For a moment, she held him tightly.

Then she pulled away.

“I can't.”

“Why?”

“Because if I take you with me, they'll catch both of us.”

She looked toward the ruined carriage.

“There is a compartment underneath it.”

Darius shook his head.

“No.”

“You'll hide there until they're gone.”

“No! I'm not leaving you!”

A strange light appeared in her palm.

Darius stepped back.

“Mother?”

She touched his forehead.

Warmth spread through his body.

His strength disappeared.

“Mother… what did you do?”

“I’m sorry.”

She caught him and carried him toward the carriage.

“Please…”

“I need you to live.”

She placed him inside the hidden compartment.

Darius reached for her.

She held his hand.

For one second, she was no longer a member of one of the great bloodlines.

She was simply his mother.

Tears.

She kissed his forehead.

“You're going to hate me for this.”

Her voice trembled.

“You may not understand why I did it.”

She brushed his hair away from his face.

“But one day, you will.”

“You were never a mistake, Darius.”

She squeezed his hand.

“You are my son.”

Darius's eyes widened as he saw something strange appear around her wrist.

A glowing bloodline mark.

His mother's expression changed.

She stared at it for a moment.

Then she made her decision.

“No.”

She placed two fingers over the mark.

“Mother?”

The light around her body suddenly became stronger.

Darius felt something was wrong.

“What are you doing?”

“Making sure they can never use me to find you.”

The bloodline mark cracked.

His mother's face twisted in pain.

A sharp pulse of energy spread through the clearing.

The mark shattered completely.

Darius stared at her.

“What did you do?”

“I severed my bloodline.”

His mother smiled weakly.

“There is no going back now.”

The bloodline of House Veyne had been passed through generations.

It could be used to track its members.

It could be used to locate them.

And, in certain circumstances, it could even be used to restore a dying bloodline member.

She had just destroyed her connection to it.

She had cut herself off from her family.

From their protection.

From their power.

From any chance of being saved.

But she wasn't finished.

She placed her palm against her chest.

A second glow appeared.

Her core.

Darius's eyes widened.

“Mother, stop!”

She looked at him.

“If they capture me, they'll search my memories.”

The glow intensified.

“They'll find out where I hid you.”

“Then don't let them capture you!”

A sad smile crossed her face.

“I won't.”

She drove her power into her own core.

Crack.

A sound like breaking glass echoed through the clearing.

Her core fractured.

Blood spilled from the corner of her mouth.

Darius screamed.

“Mother!”

She forced herself to remain standing.

Her power was disappearing.

Her life was disappearing with it.

She had destroyed the two things that could have saved her.

Her bloodline.

Her core.

There was no recovery anymore.

No healing.

No rescue.

No way back.

She had chosen death before the enemy could choose it for her.

She leaned closer and touched Darius's cheek.

“This is my last choice.”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“And they can't take it from me.”

She closed the compartment.

Darius reached for her.

“Mother!”

She placed one final hand against the door.

“I love you.”

Then she turned around.

The approaching footsteps grew louder.

Her body was already weakening, but she stood in the middle of the clearing.

Waiting.

The hunters emerged from the trees.

One of them stopped when he saw her.

“You destroyed your core.”

His expression changed.

“You fool. Do you know what you've done?”

She smiled.

“Yes.”

She raised the last remaining trace of power in her body.

“And now you'll never get him.”

The man stepped forward.

“Where is the boy?”

Her smile disappeared.

“Come and find out.”

She attacked.

The battle began.

Every attack consumed what little life remained inside her.

She wasn't fighting to survive.

She wasn't fighting to win.

She was fighting to make sure they never reached Darius.

One attacker fell.

Then another.

But more kept coming.

Her movements became slower.

Her breathing became weaker.

Still, she refused to step back.

Eventually, her legs gave out.

She caught herself against her broken sword.

One of the hunters approached.

“You've lost.”

She looked toward the ruined carriage.

For a brief moment, she imagined Darius growing older.

Standing on his own.

Living a life she would never see.

Then she smiled.

“No.”

She whispered her final words.

“I've already won.”

Her body went still.

Silence returned to the forest.

Inside the hidden compartment, Darius could no longer hear her.

He screamed her name until his voice broke.

But she never answered.

She had given him everything.

Her husband.

Her home.

Her bloodline.

Her power.

Her future.

And finally, her life.

There was nothing left for her to return to.

That was the price of her choice.

She had not simply sacrificed herself.

She had made certain that even death could never be undone.

And the people hunting Darius still had no idea why he was worth keeping alive.

They only knew one thing.

His mother had been willing to destroy everything she was to keep him out of their hands.

Deep inside the darkness surrounding Darius, something ancient stirred.

Something that had been waiting for him for a very long time.
