By the time Darius returned to the manor, the sun had already begun to disappear behind the trees.

His clothes were soaked with sweat, and every muscle in his body ached.

He had spent the entire afternoon training.

The manor appeared through the trees as he approached. It was large enough to belong to a noble family, but compared to the other estates owned by House Veyne, it looked almost deserted.

Darius had been given the manor when he turned twelve.

That was the age when direct descendants of House Veyne were expected to awaken their abilities.

For most children of the family, receiving a personal residence at that age was a sign that they were stepping into adulthood.

For Darius, it had been different.

He had failed to awaken.

Without an awakened ability, he had no value in the eyes of most members of the family. His parents were already dead, his inheritance had been taken from him, and no powerful faction was willing to support someone they believed had no future.

The manor had therefore become less of a home and more of a place to keep him out of sight.

Darius entered through the front doors.

Nyx followed behind him.

"You can return to your room," Darius said.

Nyx bowed.

"Yes, 9th Vein."

Darius continued toward his own room.

He changed out of his training clothes, washed the sweat from his body, and put on a fresh set of clothes.

He could have rested.

He didn't.

Instead, he headed toward the back of the manor.

A short distance behind the estate was a wooden gate leading into the forest.

Darius pushed it open and stepped outside.

Then he ran.

The forest passed around him in a blur.

He moved between the trees without slowing, his footsteps controlled and precise. His breathing remained steady even as his speed increased.

Several minutes later, he reached a clearing.

This was where he trained.

The sight before him was nothing like the impressive training grounds used by the other direct descendants of House Veyne.

There were no advanced training devices.

No expensive weapons.

No instructors.

Everything had been built by Darius himself.

Wooden pillars had been driven into the ground at different heights. Thick ropes stretched between trees. Heavy stones hung from branches. Wooden targets had been placed at different distances, some visible and others hidden behind obstacles.

A narrow path filled with traps crossed the center of the clearing.

It was crude.

But it had taken Darius years to build.

He had designed it to test every part of his body.

Speed.

Strength.

Balance.

Endurance.

Reaction.

Darius stood at the entrance and looked across the course.

He took a deep breath.

"It's time."

He stepped forward.

The first obstacle came immediately.

A heavy wooden log swung toward his chest.

Darius lowered his body.

The log passed above him.

Before it could swing back, he pushed off the ground and jumped onto a wooden platform.

Another obstacle came from the left.

He twisted his body.

A blade passed inches from his shoulder.

Darius landed and immediately sprinted forward.

The course became faster.

Harder.

His muscles began to burn.

Sweat ran down his face.

But he continued.

He had been banned from the family's official training grounds years ago.

The reason was simple.

He had no ability.

The elders had decided that training him alongside awakened descendants was a waste of resources.

Darius had accepted their decision.

But he had never accepted their conclusion.

If they refused to teach him, he would teach himself.

He had spent countless hours reading combat manuals.

He studied the movements of warriors.

He learned how to use his body efficiently.

He learned how to conserve energy.

He studied different fighting styles and practiced them alone.

He couldn't increase his strength through Vita like the awakened members of his family.

So he trained his natural body until there was almost nothing left to improve.

Another wooden blade came toward his head.

Darius ducked.

He spun around and struck a target behind him.

BAM!

The wooden target shook violently.

Darius didn't stop.

He kept moving.

Again.

And again.

Until his body could no longer continue.

When he finally stopped, he dropped onto one knee.

His chest rose and fell heavily.

For several seconds, he simply breathed.

Then he sat down.

The sun was almost gone.

Darius closed his eyes.

Physical training was only half of his routine.

The other half was thought.

He began replaying his recent battles.

The fight in the Black Reach.

The movements of the creatures.

The moments when he had hesitated.

The attacks he had barely avoided.

The mistakes he had made.

He examined every detail.

He wasn't simply remembering the fights.

He was dissecting them.

Where had he wasted movement?

Where had his stance weakened?

How could he have avoided that attack?

How could he have countered faster?

Every answer became another lesson.

Over the years, this habit had sharpened his instincts.

He couldn't compete with awakened warriors in raw power.

But he could make his movements more efficient.

He could make better decisions.

He could learn.

And as long as he continued learning, he refused to believe he was helpless.

Darius eventually opened his eyes.

Nyx was standing a short distance away.

She had been waiting quietly.

"9th Vein."

Darius looked at her.

"What is it?"

"It is almost time for dinner."

Darius frowned.

"Dinner?"

"The quarterly family gathering."

He stared at her for several seconds.

Then he remembered.

Three months.

It had already been three months since the last one.

Darius let out a long sigh.

He hated these dinners.

Not because of the food.

Because of the people.

Every three months, the direct descendants of House Veyne were summoned to the main estate.

No matter what position they held.

No matter how busy they were.

They attended.

It was tradition.

But Darius knew there was more to it than tradition.

These gatherings were reminders.

Reminders of who stood at the top.

Reminders of who held power.

And reminders of where Darius stood in the family.

At the bottom.

Darius rose.

"Let's go."

He and Nyx returned to the manor.

After bathing, Darius changed into formal clothing.

Nyx had already prepared everything.

A dark coat.

Clean trousers.

Polished shoes.

Nothing extravagant.

Darius had never cared much about appearance.

Once he was ready, he left the manor.

The forest was almost completely dark by then.

The journey to the main estate took several minutes.

When the massive walls of House Veyne finally appeared through the trees, Darius slowed.

The estate was enormous.

Its dark stone walls stretched across the horizon, surrounding several buildings and courtyards.

This was the heart of House Veyne.

It was where the most important decisions concerning the family were made.

It was where the Blood Sovereign lived.

And tonight, every important member of the family would be gathered inside.

Darius noticed several carriages parked outside.

Some were simple.

Others were decorated with expensive materials and carried the crests of powerful branches of House Veyne.

His cousins had already arrived.

His uncles and aunts were here as well.

Darius looked at the carriages for a moment.

As a direct descendant, he was supposed to have a carriage sent to collect him.

None had been.

He hadn't expected one.

Darius continued walking.

The massive doors opened as he approached.

The guards recognized him immediately.

None greeted him.

Their eyes followed him as he entered.

Darius ignored them.

He walked through the enormous corridors of the estate.

The farther he went, the quieter everything became.

Eventually, he reached the dining hall.

He stopped in front of the doors.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Darius took a slow breath.

He could already imagine what waited inside.

Judging eyes.

Whispers.

Mockery.

He had experienced it many times before.

He pushed the doors open.

The atmosphere changed immediately.

The dining hall was enormous.

A long mahogany table occupied most of the room.

Twenty-one people were already seated around it.

Darius's eyes moved across the table.

The family hierarchy was obvious.

Closest to the head of the table sat the Pulses.

They were the adult direct descendants of House Veyne.

Ragnar Veyne's sons and daughters.

Darius's uncles and aunts.

Each of them held enormous authority within the family.

Some controlled cities.

Others controlled settlements.

Some commanded military forces.

Others handled the family's wealth and political affairs.

They were powerful enough to rule thousands of people.

But despite all that power, none of them sat at the head of the table.

That seat belonged to one person.

The Blood Sovereign.

Further down sat the younger generation.

The Veins.

They were Darius's cousins—the children of the Pulses.

Most of them had already awakened.

Some were already receiving advanced training.

Others were being prepared to inherit their parents' positions.

The remaining seats belonged to the spouses of the Pulses.

They had married into House Veyne and were part of the family, but they did not possess Veyne blood.

Darius slowly walked toward his seat.

Unlike the others, he had no parent sitting beside him.

His father had once been one of the Pulses.

One of Ragnar's sons.

Darius's mother had also belonged to a powerful branch of the family.

Both were dead.

Their deaths had left Darius alone.

Yet his father's position had not simply disappeared.

Darius had inherited his place within the family hierarchy.

His seat was at the far end of the table, directly opposite the head.

It wasn't the most prestigious position.

But it was still important.

And that was one of the reasons several members of the family hated him.

They believed a powerless descendant had no right to occupy it.

Darius reached his chair and sat.

No one greeted him.

Several people didn't even look at him.

Others stared openly.

Darius ignored all of them.

He had barely settled into his seat when a woman across the table scoffed.

She wore an expensive silk dress and enough jewelry to make her status obvious.

Her name was Selene Veyne.

She was married to one of the Pulses, making her Darius's aunt by marriage.

Selene looked Darius up and down.

Then she smiled.

"Looks like you still haven't awakened."

Darius didn't respond.

Selene's smile disappeared slightly.

"Honestly, I think it's time you accepted reality."

Still nothing.

"You've been given years to prove yourself, yet you have nothing to show for it."

Several people around the table exchanged glances.

No one interrupted.

Selene leaned back in her chair.

"I think it's best you do everyone a favor and disappear. Someone like you shouldn't even be sitting here."

Darius remained completely still.

His crimson eyes stayed fixed ahead.

He didn't look at her.

He didn't react.

That seemed to irritate her more than any insult could have.

Her brows furrowed.

"What?"

Darius remained silent.

Selene's expression darkened.

"Are you ignoring me?"

No response.

Her voice became sharper.

"What did anyone expect from you? You're nothing but the failed son of"

"Selene."

Her husband spoke.

The Pulse's voice was stern.

She turned toward him.

He gave her a warning look.

"Enough."

Selene clenched her teeth.

For a moment, she remained silent.

Then she looked back at Darius.

Her anger had not disappeared.

If anything, it had grown.

"You really think you're above everyone because you sit in that seat?"

Darius finally moved.

He slowly turned his head.

His crimson eyes met hers.

"If you want someone to listen to your whining," he said calmly, "find another bed to crawl into."

The room went silent.

Darius's voice remained cold.

"That seems to be what you're best at."

Selene's face went pale.

Then it turned red with fury.

Several people around the table looked at Darius in surprise.

He almost never responded to their insults.

They were used to Darius remaining silent.

But this was different.

Selene's lips trembled.

"You bastard..."

Darius stared at her.

He could tolerate being insulted.

He could tolerate being called useless.

He could tolerate the whispers.

He could even tolerate them mocking his failure to awaken.

But his parents were different.

They were dead.

They couldn't defend themselves.

And Darius would not allow anyone to use them as weapons against him.

Selene opened her mouth again.

"You"

Step.

The entire room froze.

A single footstep echoed somewhere beyond the doors.

Nobody spoke.

Another step.

The sound traveled through the halls.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Every person around the table immediately stood.

Their heads lowered.

Even the Pulses.

Even the people who controlled entire cities.

The guards positioned along the walls dropped to their knees.

The maids followed.

Their foreheads nearly touched the floor.

Darius's expression changed.

He felt it.

The pressure.

Something enormous was approaching.

Every step seemed to make the air heavier.

His heart began to beat faster.

Step.

Step.

Step.

The sound drew closer.

Darius clenched his fists.

He had experienced powerful awakened warriors before.

This was different.

The pressure wasn't simply strength.

It was dominance.

A presence that seemed to tell every person nearby that resistance was meaningless.

The doors of the dining hall slowly opened.

A man stepped inside.

The pressure intensified.

Darius's body almost buckled.

He forced his knees to remain straight.

His teeth clenched.

Sweat immediately appeared on his forehead.

The man walked into the room.

Crimson hair.

Blood-red eyes.

A compact but powerful frame.

His expression was calm.

Almost relaxed.

But there was something terrifying about that calmness.

This was Ragnar Veyne.

The Blood Sovereign.

Darius's grandfather.

The strongest member of House Veyne.

A Zenith.

Ragnar's gaze moved across the room.

Nobody dared look up.

Nobody dared breathe too loudly.

He walked toward the head of the table.

Every step felt like a judgment.

Then he sat.

Silence.

Ragnar looked around the table.

"Sit."

Everyone immediately obeyed.

The sound of twenty-one chairs moving at once echoed through the dining hall.

Ragnar looked toward the maids."Serve the food."

The maids moved immediately.

Plates were placed in front of everyone.

Then they returned to their positions along the walls.

Nobody touched the food.

Ragnar picked up his utensils.

He began eating.

Still, no one else moved.

The Pulses were powerful.

The Veins were talented.

Some of them had enough strength to defeat ordinary awakened warriors without difficulty.

Yet none of that mattered here.

They were all waiting for Ragnar.

Darius watched quietly.

He understood the purpose of the dinner now.

It wasn't about family.

It was about hierarchy.

Every three months, the Blood Sovereign gathered everyone beneath his roof and reminded them of the same truth.

No matter how powerful they became outside these walls, there was still one person above them.

Ragnar continued eating.

A minute passed.

Then another.

Finally, without looking up, he spoke.

"Eat."

Everyone immediately moved.

Forks touched plates.

The quiet sound of eating filled the room.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody laughed.

Nobody even looked at anyone else.

Every movement was restrained.

Every action was careful.

Only Ragnar seemed completely relaxed.

Darius ate slowly.

His mind wandered.

He thought about the power he had felt when Ragnar entered.

It was overwhelming.

That was the kind of power Darius wanted.

Not because he wanted people to kneel before him.

He wanted the ability to decide his own fate.

He had spent most of his life being controlled by others.

His parents had died.

His inheritance had been taken.

His family had abandoned him.

He had been called useless.

He had been denied training.

He had been excluded.

And he had been forced to accept all of it because he was weak.

Darius tightened his grip on his fork.

Never again.

He didn't know what the strange power inside him was.

He didn't know what the Devouring Core truly meant.

He didn't understand the voice from his dreams.

But something had changed.

For the first time in his life, he had a path toward power.

And he would walk it.

Eventually, Ragnar placed his utensils down.

The entire table immediately went still.

He picked up a napkin and wiped his mouth.

"It was delicious."

The maids immediately dropped to their knees.

"Thank you for the honor, Sovereign."

Ragnar stood.

Everyone else stood with him.

His gaze passed over the table once.

It stopped briefly on Darius.

Darius felt his heart tighten.

For the smallest fraction of a second, he thought Ragnar's eyes had lingered on him.

Then the Blood Sovereign turned away.

He walked toward the door.

Step.

Step.

Step.

The doors closed behind him.

The pressure disappeared.

The entire room seemed to breathe again.

Yet no one moved.

Several seconds passed.

Then a minute.

Finally, people began to exhale.

Darius lowered himself back into his chair.

His clothes were damp with sweat.

His breathing was heavier than it should have been.

Ragnar had said almost nothing.

He had eaten.

He had given a few commands.

Then he had left.

Yet his presence alone had dominated the entire room.

Darius looked toward the closed doors.

That was the level he wanted to reach.

No.

He wanted to surpass it.

He didn't know how.

He didn't know when.

But he would.

Darius stood.

He ignored Selene's furious stare and walked toward the door.

As he stepped into the corridor, something suddenly stirred beneath his skin.

He stopped.

A faint warmth spread across his chest.

His hand slowly moved toward it.

The same strange sensation from before.

The Devouring Core.

Darius's expression hardened.

Then a faint voice seemed to whisper from somewhere deep inside him.

You were made for this.

Darius froze.

For a moment, the corridor disappeared.

He was back in the black-water vision.

The woman.

The darkness.

The pale eyes.

The voice.

You finally returned.

Darius's breathing stopped.

Then the vision vanished.

He was standing in the corridor again.

His hand remained pressed against his chest.

For the first time, Darius wondered if the strange power inside him had been waiting for this exact moment.

Not the dinner.

Not the family.

Not even Ragnar.

Something else.

Something much older.

And somewhere deep inside him, the Devouring Core seemed to awaken a little more.
