As the lava golem approached Niobe, she went mute and motionless, pincered by her emotions. Mortal fear and crippling loss mingled into a toxic mixture, debilitating the woman.

"It is my fault that Felix is dead," she wailed. "I brought him to the middle of nowhere. He followed me blindly because of love and trust, but I could not protect him."

Niobe raised her trembling chin to the monstrous hulk plodding towards her like the god of death. "Am I going to die as well?"

Humans facing death and destruction often turn to gods, kneeling in prayer to have their grace and protection. What does a god faced with mortality do? Did the Ascendancy lie to her about immortality?

"What should I do, Felix?" she cried at his headless corpse. "Shall I accept my end readily, or must I resist till the last moment like a cornered animal? Will I disgrace the gods either way?"

"I love you," Felix's ethereal voice sounded in her head. The young god really loved her and gave up his life without a second thought. Niobe had to honor his sacrifice by surviving. "But how?"

The injured goddess gazed bitterly at the stubs that had once been her hands. She was crippled and helpless. Niobe let out a cry of anguish and joined her broken stumps as if praying.

"Only a Titan can rescue me," she told herself in a trance as her eyes glossed over. "I will pray for protection from the house I belong to."

Niobe filled her lungs with air and screamed at the top of her voice, louder than ever. "O Queen amongst goddesses! O Guardian of fire and lightning!"

"Anaktoria Ifianasa Elektra! Heed my prayer!"

The lava golem felt no danger from Niobe's desperate wails. He approached her and knelt before her like a beast about to have its meal. Its mouth opened again, revealing the hellish vortex within, bubbling with ghastly miasma.

Niobe's eyes were directed towards the sky. "I need your protection, O Great Titanide, Elektra!"

Her cry for help radiated from her like a tidal wave, resounding throughout the forest and reaching ears far and wide.

A few seconds later, a static pillar of light shot into the sky from the citadel on Mt. Radomir. Citizens of the plebe cities gasped in wonder as it streaked across the night like a blazing comet.

On her end, Niobe, the amputee goddess, prepared to have her life taken. She lowered her face to the executioner of her lover—the lava golem. Up close, she could tell it was a mindless creature animated with dark words. It had no emotions; therefore, begging for her life would be pointless.

"What are you?" she demanded frantically. "Who is your master?"

The monster, with its trap opened wide, scooped out a fistful of the red ooze from inside itself. It looked like magma indeed and burned the grass wherever it dripped. The lava golem meant to blather Niobe's little head with the frothing poison.

"I hereby serve you the nectar of a true god," it explained fluently. "False gods," it added, pointing an accusatory finger at her. "Must die…"

Niobe had already lost the will to resist her attacker. Actually, now, she agreed with the lava golem. Wasn't she a false goddess? The disgusting lie perpetrated by the Ascendancy Government that gods were immortal had been debunked and defiled.

Niobe closed her eyes, realizing she was moments away from death. It was going to be very painful, though. "I am joining you on the other side soon, Felix," she said her final words bitterly.

The monster raised its hand to butcher her face, but suddenly stopped short. It was as if he had received an emergency order.

The lava golem looked up to the skies as if expecting it to rain. Then, suddenly, it jumped to its feet and ran back twenty paces.

Niobe opened her eyes, perplexed by her assailant's behavior. Wasn't the monster going to kill her? Did it have mercy? Why was it retreating all of a sudden?

Crackle! Boom! The sky rumbled tumultuously even though there were no clouds in sight. The goddess immediately realized what was happening.

"Oh," she murmured, as a tear escaped her eye. "You heard my prayer, Your Providence. You have come to rescue me, O mighty Titanide Elektra!"

Boom! A massive thunder crack sounded, and from above, a sheer bolt of lightning zig-zagged into the meadow. Rumble! The ground rippled and cracked where it landed. Temperatures rose drastically, and a halo flooded the area.

As the dust settled, a figure rose from its crouch. Goddess Elektra emerged from the rubble and flash like an ancient entity. She stood at her full height, surveying the area.

Over seven feet tall, Elektra was one of the four titans reigning over the land of Theikos. Niobe was a goddess-prior in House Elektra.

"Who is making this commotion in my land?" Elektra boomed.

Tarsus, Damon, and Felicity climbed down the rope ladder, one after another. The womb of the cavern was dark and dreary. It was a treacherous descent from the ledge, slithering down over fifty feet of rock. The rope ladder had sturdy wooden rungs for support, but everything was damp and slippery. The youngsters had to be very careful lest they risk falling to their deaths. The walls were covered with moss. A layer of mist hung in the air, stinging their noses. Felicity had insisted on going down first. Perhaps it had something to do with depriving the men of an accidental peek under her tunic if she had gone last. Or maybe she did not want men to lead the path. Regardless, the Muse had her way and took the forefront. The shaft’s rock parapet had prevented them from capturing the underground panorama earlier. Halfway down the ladder, they could see how large the cavern was.The hollow’s roof was so high that clouds formed near the upper ceiling. A str

“Ah! Adventurers! You came!” Hector mooted loudly. Damon and Tarsus were dressed in leather battle armor. Felicity, who was not a fighter to begin with, was in wools to counter the cold of the night. She had refused to wear armor of any sort, contrary to the counsel of her partners. Instead, she asked the men to worry about themselves and not get stuck anywhere.“We put the matter to vote, and it was unanimous,” Damon quipped.“I am glad,” the Prefect said. “Victory feels more certain now. I hope you are not bringing the kid.” Zoe had been put to sleep in Felicity’s room. It would be risky for the trio to take the child into the enemy’s den at that time of night. “She is weary from the trip and is enjoying a good night’s sleep.”“Good. Good. It is better if girls her age do not see such horrors.”Outside the inn, seventeen other people were gathered. Thes

Felicity was swimming in a mysterious body of water. Moonlight lit her way ahead. The night was peaceful and serene. She swam onward for some time and then floated on her back, kicking gently with backstrokes. Was it a dream? If it was, then it was a pleasant change from her usual nightmares. There was a creek near the farm where she grew up. Felicity would spend hours in the water talking to fish. But the dream was in an unfamiliar place. She heard a splash. Something rose out of the water like a giant arm. Under the moonlight, she saw dark glistening scales. A rancorous and miasmic aura exuded from it. Felicity paddled to her left to avoid the object. But there was another one blocking her way, and many others surfaced to surround her. In no time, the long, slender arms encircled her. They flipped in the air like tentacles. Felicity swam towards land, but other appalling creatures were waiting for her on the embankment—a large bat with shadowy wings and a tr

The sun was low on the horizon. Three horses trotted on a dusty path at a brisk pace. On the left was Damon’s stallion, Friar, a chestnut dun fjord, one of the friendly breeds of the grasslands that he purchased from Cuppa. Felicity, in the middle, had brought a horse that she had raised on her farm, a gorgeous creme buckskin. She had named it Silver, after its shiny overcoat. Silver had gray eyes as a foal, which had now turned amber. The men had listened to her talk about the steed with patience. The subject was not a fascinating one for them. They liked to hear Felicity’s voice. It was a thirst they did not know they had until they met her.The issue, however, had been to find Tarsus, a proper horse. The hulk was well over six feet and weighed over two hundred and fifty pounds. After rigorous scouting, an acquaintance of Empousa had procured a criollos horse for him. It was a lofty animal, almost six feet in height. But Tarsus mounted and dismou

The boat floated leisurely towards the river bank. Hypnos looked like a large upright bat, leaning against the stern with arms wrapped around himself. Repeated failure had made him bitter and distraught. He always located potential seraph vessels through a blood spell. In his last attempt at the ritual, the duo had abducted a patrician girl from Modo. She was a healthy colleen with a robust constitution. Hypnos had been very optimistic about the results. Amidst an elaborate ritual, including blood sacrifices and a fire circle, the live vessel had exploded midway. This time it was different. He had had a vision of the girl and where she lived, in a vivid dream. Accepting it as a sign from his mistress, Hypnos had proceeded to use her as a vessel. But he faced abject failure yet again. At that rate, he could never awaken the Dark Seraph, and his dreams of becoming a god would be crushed.Hypnos was a reject from the Labors. Rhode accepted some bread and water after she had thrown up her fill of mud. Hypnos cast another spell to remedy her weakness. Dusk had set in, and Grave lit a torch near the mouth of the cavern. The necromancer had disappeared from view, but Rhode could hear him going bump in the dark, near the river bank. She thought she heard a small animal braying from that direction.“It is almost time,” Grave told her. “The solstice is upon us.”He gave her a cloak and turned away to give her privacy. Rhode undressed from the mud-caked tunic and wrapped the blanket tightly around her neck to the knees. The riverside would be chilly this time of the night. She had not come to terms yet, with the prospect of becoming the vessel for a seraph. The sheer scale of it went over her head. She had lived encumbered in the Agrippa household all her life. Apart from a few visits to the town marketplace, she could not see the rest of Fugi, forget about the other
