Adrian’s gaze swept over the wall, Every photo, every document, every red string seemed to point toward him, his businesses, his movements, even mundane details like which cafés he visited on certain days.
Some of the images were clearly taken without his knowledge. A few were blurry street shots. Others were crisp enough to have come from security cameras.
Vivienne stepped past him, her heels silent on the carpet. "I started putting this together a year before we met," she said, pulling a small folder from a cabinet. "Back when I thought it was just business rivalry. It’s not."
Damien crossed his arms. "She’s telling the truth, Kane. I didn’t believe it either, until someone tried to gut one of my companies from the inside."
Adrian turned slowly. "And I’m supposed to believe you weren’t behind that?"
Damien’s smirk returned faintly. "If I’d done it, you wouldn’t still have the company."
Vivienne spread several photographs across the desk. "Look at these names. Two of them were on your payroll. Three on Damien’s. They all disappeared within weeks of each other."
Adrian scanned the faces. None rang a bell. "They’re ghosts now," Vivienne said. "No bank accounts. No digital footprint. Just gone."
"And you think they’re connected?" Adrian asked.
"I know they are." Vivienne picked up another photo and handed it to him.
It was Selena. Standing in an unfamiliar lobby, speaking to a man with a jagged scar down the side of his neck. The man’s face stirred a faint memory, something from years ago, before Adrian had taken the CEO seat.
"Who is he?" Adrian asked.
Vivienne’s eyes darkened. "Leon Vargas. He’s the one pulling the strings. If your ex-wife is anywhere near him… she’s in deep."
Damien leaned against the desk. "Vargas doesn’t just take down businesses. He erases people. Sometimes literally."
Adrian studied the photo again. Selena’s posture was relaxed. Comfortable. Not the stance of someone intimidated, the stance of someone making a deal.
Vivienne’s voice cut through his thoughts. "If she’s working with him, she’s not just after your money. She’s after your life."
Marcus’s voice buzzed in Adrian’s ear via the earpiece he always wore. "Sir, I’m outside. And… we’ve got a problem."
Adrian stepped toward the door. "What kind of problem?"
There was a pause. "A black SUV’s been circling the block since you went in. Two men inside. One of them’s armed."
Damien straightened, the smirk gone now. "They’re here for one of us."
Adrian’s phone vibrated in his pocket. Another message from the unknown number. "Too late, Kane. She’s already made her move."
From the street outside, a single gunshot cracked through the night, The crack of the gunshot ripped through the night like the city itself had been split in two.
For a second, no one moved. Adrian felt the vibration in his chest before his mind caught up with the sound. The office smelled faintly of old paper and rain from their damp clothes, but beneath it, the sharp metallic tang of adrenaline began to cut in.
Marcus’s voice in his earpiece was clipped, urgent. "Sir. Stay inside."

Heat rolled over them in a wave, followed by a thick cloud of acrid smoke.Adrian hit the ground hard, shielding Vivienne with his body. His ears rang, drowning out Marcus’s shouts. When the ringing faded enough for him to hear again, the first sound was the hiss of fire suppression systems kicking in, jets of white vapor flooding the air."Vivienne!" he barked, pulling her upright. She coughed, waving the smoke from her face. "I’m fine," she managed.Marcus was already checking the corners, rifle raised, eyes narrowing. "Sir... Gabriel’s not in the building anymore."Adrian’s gaze snapped to Selena, who was leaning against the wall, breathing hard but untouched. "How convenient," Adrian said, stepping toward her.She didn’t move, just arched a brow. "If I’d wanted him to take me with him, I would’ve left when the breach happened."Vivienne’s voice was sharp. "And yet the bomb
Chapter Nine – No Way Out
The heavy thud of the steel shutters locking in place reverberated through the 40th floor. The sound was final, deliberate, a statement.Gabriel’s eyes flicked briefly toward the door, then back to Adrian. "You planning on keeping me here against my will?"Adrian’s tone was calm, almost conversational. "You walked in. I’m just making sure you don’t walk out until we’re done."Selena’s gaze shifted to the nearest guard, noting the subtle repositioning of his stance. The weight of tension was thick, like static before a lightning strike. "Done with what, exactly?" Gabriel asked."With deciding the future of this city," Adrian replied. "And who’s going to be holding the reins when the dust settles."Vivienne stepped forward from the shadows near the wall, her heels clicking softly on the polished floor. She was dressed in a deep crimson suit, the color sharp against the muted room."Adrian," she said without taking her eyes off Gabriel, "your guest doesn’t seem to understand he’s not in
Chapter Eight – When the Doors Close
The Kane Enterprises lobby had never felt this silent. The marble floors gleamed under the recessed lighting, the gold inlays on the walls catching faint reflections from the glass doors. But the glass was now hidden behind heavy ballistic shutters, sealed tight.Security staff moved like a well-rehearsed drill team, rifles at low ready, eyes scanning every angle, On the 40th floor, Adrian stood at the head of the war table, watching the live feeds on the big screens. Gabriel’s SUVs were closing in.Vivienne sat across from him, her tablet feeding a steady stream of intel. Marcus hovered by the door, his posture wound tight like a coiled spring. "ETA?" Adrian asked."Three minutes," Vivienne replied without looking up.Adrian’s gaze shifted to Marcus. "You’ve got your team in position?"Marcus nodded. "Two at the elevator banks, two in the service corridor, one watching the stairwell. If they get past the lobby, they’ll have to step over bodies to reach you.""Good," Adrian said. "Let
Chapter Seven – The Invitation
The city never truly slept, but at this hour, its heartbeat slowed. "When I move, you move.""And if I don’t?" she shot back, her tone sharp even in the chaos. He gave her a look that left no room for debate. Chunks of stone chipped away inches from his head.Marcus’s voice was a sharp growl over comms. "Sir, alley’s compromised. One shooter down, three circling. He didn’t stop to watch him fall, there was no time.Damien’s voice suddenly cut in through Adrian’s earpiece. "East stairwell’s clear, for now. But you’re not gonna like what I just saw.""What?"There was a beat of silence, broken by Damien’s low curse. "Selena’s here. And she’s not alone."Adrian’s breath stilled.
