Kael moved before the guards reached the door.

He grabbed Joric's body and dragged it to the corner. The old wolf was light. Too light. Kael positioned him slumped against the wall, head tilted, as if he had fallen asleep.

Then he opened the door.

The two guards stepped back. Their hands were on their weapons. They had heard the commotion. They had come to investigate.

Kael stepped into the corridor and closed the door behind him. His face was calm. His voice was steady.

"Joric is resting," he said. "I was asking about the patrol schedule. He got tired."

The guards looked at each other. One of them spoke. "He sounded... distressed."

"He's old. He's tired. I pushed too hard."

The guard's eyes narrowed. "You're bleeding."

Kael looked down. The bandages on his arm were soaked red. The wound had opened again. He could feel the blood dripping down his fingers.

"I reopened the wound," he said. "I need to see the healer. Mira."

"We'll escort you."

"No," Kael said. His voice was sharp. "I need to see her alone. There are things I need to discuss. Private things."

The guard hesitated. Kael stepped closer. He lowered his voice.

"I'm the Silent Fang. I was attacked by pack wolves. I found silver. There's a traitor in this pack. Do you want to be the one who delays the investigation because you wanted to hold my hand?"

The guard stepped back. His face went pale. "No. No, I didn't mean—"

"Then let me pass."

They stepped aside.

Kael walked past them. He did not look back. He did not run. Every step was measured. Calm.

But his heart was pounding.

He found Mira in the infirmary. She was cleaning instruments. Her back was to the door.

Kael closed the door behind him. She turned.

Her face was calm. Her eyes were unreadable.

"You're bleeding again," she said. "Sit down."

"I'm not here for treatment."

Mira set down the instrument. She wiped her hands on a cloth. "Then why are you here?"

Kael stepped closer. "Joric is dead."

Mira's face did not change. "What happened?"

"I asked him questions. He got scared. His heart gave out."

Mira tilted her head. "Questions about what?"

"The Silver Consortium. The traitor. The patrol schedule."

A long pause. Mira's eyes flickered. Something shifted behind them.

"Joric told you about the Consortium?" she asked.

"He told me you did. Months ago. You told him there was a traitor. You told him you had proof."

Mira was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "I did."

"You never went to the Alpha."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I don't know who the traitor is," Mira said. "I have evidence of the conspiracy. I know the Consortium is buying secrets. But I don't have the name. I've been trying to find it."

Kael stared at her. His hand moved toward his knife. "You told Joric you had proof."

"I told him I had proof of the conspiracy. Not of the traitor. There's a difference."

"You let him believe you knew more than you did."

"I let him believe what he wanted to believe. It kept him quiet."

Kael pulled the knife. He held it at his side. Mira did not flinch.

"You should have come to me," Kael said.

"You were injured. You were unconscious."

"Before that. Months ago. When you first found out."

Mira met his eyes. "I didn't know who to trust. I still don't. The traitor could be anyone. The Alpha. Voss. Commander Hale. Your friend Theron."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Theron?"

"He wrote the schedule. He had access. He has motive."

"What motive?"

Mira shrugged. "Ambition. Money. Fear. I don't know. But he's a suspect. Just like everyone else."

Kael stepped closer. The knife was in his hand. His arm was bleeding. His head was pounding.

"Show me the evidence," he said.

"What evidence?"

"Your proof. The conspiracy. Show me."

Mira reached into her coat. She pulled out a folded piece of paper. She held it out to him.

Kael took it. He unfolded it. It was a list of names. Dates. Locations. Transactions.

Silver purchases. Meetings at the Rusted Stag. Communications with human traders.

It was everything. The supply route leaks. The patrol schedule compromises. The targeted assassinations.

Pack wolves were selling their own. The Consortium was paying in silver and safety.

Kael looked at Mira. "Where did you get this?"

"I took it from Voss's quarters."

Kael froze. "Voss?"

"He's the tactical officer. He has access to everything. He's been making deals with the Consortium for months. He's been selling them information. Patrol routes. Weakness assessments. Everything."

Kael stared at the list. He read the names again. Voss was on every line. The dates matched the attacks.

He wanted to believe it. He wanted to have the answer. But something felt wrong.

"Why are you telling me this?" Kael asked.

Mira met his eyes. "Because you're the Silent Fang. You're the only one who can stop him. The Alpha won't believe me. The council is compromised. But you... you can do what needs to be done."

Kael looked at the paper. Then he looked at Mira. The healer. The woman who had treated his wound. The woman who had smiled and said he would need her.

She was giving him a target. Voss. The tactical officer. The man who had the most access.

But she had waited until now. She had waited until Joric was dead. She had waited until Kael was desperate.

Something was wrong. He could feel it.

But he had no choice. He had a name. He had proof.

And he had a knife.

You have evidence that the tactical officer is the traitor. But the evidence came from Mira, who just let you believe a dead man knew more than he did. Do you trust her and go after Voss, or do you wait and investigate her first?
