Kael collapsed behind a fallen log.
His arm was on fire. The fever was back. His vision swam. He pressed his back against the rotting wood and tried to breathe.
The Rusted Stag was half a mile behind him. The compound was two miles the other way. He was in no man's land. Hunted. Alone.
He closed his eyes. Just for a moment. Just to rest.
A twig snapped.
Kael's eyes opened. His hand found the knife. He rolled to his knees, blade ready.
A figure stood twenty feet away. Small. Slender. Female.
Sera Wynn.
She was holding a satchel. Her face was pale. Her eyes were wide.
"Don't," she said. "I'm not here to hurt you."
Kael did not lower the knife. "How did you find me?"
"I followed the blood trail. You're bleeding everywhere."
He looked down. His arm was soaked. The bandages were useless. He had left a path any wolf could follow.
"I brought supplies," Sera said. She held up the satchel. "Bandages. Clean water. Food."
"Why?"
She stepped closer. Slowly. Carefully. "Because you're innocent. And I know who set you up."
Kael stared at her. "You know?"
"I followed her. After you left the infirmary. I saw her leave. I saw where she went."
"Mira. Where did she go?"
Sera stopped a few feet away. She knelt and opened the satchel. She pulled out clean bandages and a canteen.
"The Rusted Stag," she said. "She went to the Rusted Stag. She met with someone there. A human. They talked for an hour."
Kael's blood went cold. Mira was already at the Stag. She was already making her next move.
"What did they talk about?" Kael asked.
"I couldn't get close. But I saw her leave. She was carrying something. A box. Metal. Small."
"A weapon?"
"Maybe. Or a payment. I don't know."
Kael looked at the bandages. At the water. At Sera's face.
"Why are you helping me?" he asked. "If the pack finds out—"
"They won't."
"They will. And when they do, they'll execute you."
Sera met his eyes. "I know. But I don't care. I've been running messages for the Alpha for three years. I've seen the lies. The cover-ups. The wolves who disappear and never come back."
Kael said nothing.
"The pack is rotting," Sera said. "From the inside. And you're the only one trying to stop it."
She held out the bandages. Kael took them.
He unwrapped his arm. The wound was ugly. The silver had done its work. The muscle was black at the edges. He needed real treatment. Mira's treatment.
But Mira was gone. And she was the one who did this to him.
"I need to get to the Rusted Stag," Kael said. "I need to find her."
Sera shook her head. "You can't. The humans will kill you on sight. They have silver weapons. You're weak. You'd be dead in seconds."
"I don't have a choice."
"There's another way."
Kael looked at her.
"The back entrance," Sera said. "There's a tunnel. Leads from the old mine shafts to the basement. The humans don't know about it. Only the pack uses it."
"How do you know about it?"
Sera hesitated. "I used it. Before. When I needed to get information without being seen."
Kael watched her face. She was nervous. She was hiding something.
"What kind of information?" he asked.
"Human movements. Trade routes. Things the Alpha wanted to know."
Kael took the canteen. He drank. The water was cold. It cleared his head.
"How do I find the tunnel?" he asked.
Sera reached into her pocket. She pulled out a folded piece of paper. A map. Crude. Hand-drawn.
"This is the entrance," she said, pointing. "Half a mile north. Behind the old collapsed building. You'll see a grate. Lift it. Follow the tunnel straight for about two hundred yards. It opens into the basement."
Kael took the map. He studied it. The route was clear.
"Why are you helping me?" he asked again.
Sera looked at him. Her eyes were sad. "Because I'm tired of watching good wolves die. And I think you're the only one who can stop it."
She stood. She stepped back.
"Be careful," she said. "The tunnel is unstable in places. And once you're in the Stag, you're on your own."
Kael stood. His arm was wrapped. His head was clearer. He was still weak, but he was functional.
"Thank you," he said.
Sera nodded. "Don't thank me. Just find Mira. Find the proof. Clear your name."
She turned and walked away. She disappeared into the trees.
Kael looked at the map. The tunnel entrance. Half a mile north.
He started walking.
---
The collapsed building was exactly where Sera had said it would be. A pile of rotted wood and rusted metal. The grate was half-buried under debris.
Kael cleared it. He lifted the grate. A dark hole opened beneath him. Cold air rose from the tunnel.
He dropped down.
The tunnel was narrow. The walls were rough stone. The floor was wet. He had to crawl in places.
He moved slowly. His arm screamed. His ankle burned. But he kept going.
After two hundred yards, he saw light. A crack in the wall. A basement.
He pushed the crack open. It widened into a gap. He crawled through.
He was in the basement of the Rusted Stag. Boxes stacked everywhere. Dust. Cobwebs. The smell of stale alcohol.
He moved through the boxes. He found a staircase. He climbed.
The door at the top was unlocked. He pushed it open a crack.
The bar was empty.
No humans. No owner. No Mira.
Kael stepped into the room. His hand was on his knife. His eyes scanned the shadows.
A voice from behind him.
"I was wondering when you'd show up."
Kael spun.
Mira was standing in the corner. Her hands were clasped in front of her. Her face was calm.
"You set me up," Kael said.
She smiled. "Of course I did."
Mira is in front of you. She just admitted to framing you. She has no guards. No weapons visible. But she looks completely calm. Do you attack her now, or do you let her talk first?
