Damon crushed the card in his fist and tossed the black roses into the trash. His mind was already working through possibilities, eliminating suspects one by one. Lucas was locked up. Serena was in the hospital. Michael didn't have the resources to pull something like this off from Sydney.

"Damon, you're scaring me," Celia said quietly. "Who is this person? Why do they keep saying I belong to them?"

He turned to face her, forcing his expression to soften. "I don't know yet, but I'm going to find out. Did you see who delivered these?"

"No. I heard the doorbell and when I opened it, the flowers were just sitting there. No delivery person, no car, nothing."

That meant whoever did this had been watching the house, waiting for the right moment. They knew Damon had left for the meeting with Edward. They knew Celia was alone.

Anthony appeared in the doorway, his phone pressed to his ear. He ended the call and looked at Damon. "Security footage shows a courier van dropping off the package, bu

Damon and Celia walked out of the station. Celia kept close to Damon, her mind still racing from what had just happened with Hunter.“Damon,” she said softly, “can we go somewhere quiet first? I… I want to talk to you properly, just us.”Damon glanced at her, understanding immediately. “As you wish. We can find a place where no one will disturb us.”Celia felt a small smile, relief passing through her. She had been holding back for so long, and now, finally, she wanted to tell him how she felt without any interruptions. They started walking toward the car, but before Damon could even unlock the door, his phone rang. He pulled it out quickly and saw the name on the screen—Vivienne. He answered immediately. “Vivienne, what’s wrong?”On the other end, Vivienne’s voice trembled. “Damon… please. I need you… Come to my hotel… now. Please, just this last time. I know I’ve cut you off, just like Alexander wanted, but I need your help. Please, Damon.”Damon’s eyes narrowed. He didn’t know why

Damon parked the car outside the police station. He turned off the engine and looked at Celia. "Stay close to me inside. We give our statements, answer their questions, and leave. Nothing else."Celia nodded. "Okay."They got out and walked through the front doors. An officer at the desk recognized them from the call about the coffee shop incident. He stood up right away."You two are the witnesses from the coffee shop?" the officer asked."Yes," Damon said. "We are here to give statements about the attempted assault."The officer pointed to a row of chairs. "Sit there. Detective Ramirez will take you soon."They sat. Celia kept her hands in her lap. Damon put his arm around her shoulders without asking. She leaned into him. After ten minutes, a woman in plain clothes walked up. "I'm Detective Ramirez. Follow me."She led them to a small room with a table and four chairs. A recorder sat in the center. She turned it on and stated the date, time, and names."Start from the beginning," R

Damon drove Celia back to her house as the evening settled in. When they pulled up to the curb, he could see lights shining through the windows, which meant her parents had already made it home safely. That eased some of the tension he'd been carrying since they left the safe house. Celia unbuckled her seatbelt but didn't immediately get out of the car. She turned to face Damon with guilt still written across her face. "I'm really sorry about what my mother said earlier," Celia said quietly. "I know she apologized already, but I still feel terrible that you had to hear those words after everything you did for us." "It's nothing," Damon replied, keeping his voice gentle. "Your mother was scared and people say things they don't mean when they're afraid. I'm not holding it against her or you." Celia nodded but still looked troubled. "I just want you to know that I don't think you're bad luck. You're the opposite of that. You've been the best thing that's happened to me in a long time

Damon pulled his car up in front of one of the most expensive restaurants in the city. Anthony had just told him that Simon was waiting for him there. Simon had discovered more information about his mother's death, and Damon could not wait to hear what it was. After he learned the truth, the need to lie to Celia about who he really was would finally be over. Then they could start dating for real, not pretending anymore, but only if she had made up her mind about her own feelings. He got out of the car and walked toward the restaurant. One of the waitresses was already standing there, ready to guide him to the private room where Anthony and Simon were waiting. “Good afternoon, sir. Welcome to our restaurant. Mr. Williams and Mr. Simon are already waiting for you. Please come with me to the private room,” the waitress said in a polite voice. Damon nodded and followed her inside. They walked down a quiet hallway until they stopped in front of a private room. Anthony and Simon had don

Celia stared at Damon's tense look as he drove. His jaw was set hard, and he hadn't looked at her once since they left the house."Damon, you need to calm down," she said quietly."I am calm.""No, you're not. You're gripping that steering wheel like you want to break it."Damon exhaled through his nose but didn't loosen his grip. "I spent weeks planning that surprise for you. I tracked down who owned your family's house. I paid double what it was worth just to make sure I got it. And then that guy shows up and ruins everything.""He didn't ruin anything," Celia said. "You still bought the house. That's still the most amazing thing anyone has ever done for me.""But now it doesn't feel special anymore," Damon said. "Now it just looks like I was competing with him.""That's not how I see it.""Then how do you see it, Celia?" Damon finally looked at her. "Because from where I'm standing, your childhood best friend just walked back into your life and offered you the exact same thing I wa
