Chapter 1

Dustin dialed Elena’s number for the third time, staring at the untouched steak and the half-melted candle flickering in the empty corner booth of the restaurant.

She finally answered.

"Where are you?" His voice was flatter than he intended.

"Busy," Elena’s voice came through, clipped and distant. "Something unexpected blew up at the regional office. I have to stay late."

"Elena, it’s our fifth anniversary. I’ve been sitting here alone for three hours."

"Just cancel the reservation," she sighed, her tone impatient. In the background, a man’s low murmur coaxed her to hurry. "I really have to go, Dustin."

"Elena, wait—"

The line went dead.

Dustin lowered his phone and stared at the dark screen.

Five years of marriage, during which he had quietly anchored her life—even turning down a command transfer to the elite federal rescue fleet just to remain in Oakville by her side. Yet on their anniversary, after making him wait half the night, she had discarded him without a second thought to field an emergency for another man.

Before the bitterness could fully settle, the heavy tactical radio on his belt blared to life.

“All rescue units, Code Red! Survey vessel Ocean Pioneer has struck the south breakwater! Engine room fire, multiple civilian contractors trapped below! Captain Rhodes, report to Pier 4 immediately!”

Dustin dropped a fifty-dollar bill onto the table, grabbed his coat, and walked out into the freezing downpour.

By midnight, the storm had escalated into a Category 4 gale, slamming heavy black swells against the distressed survey ship.

"Captain, she’s taking on water faster than the pumps can clear it!" Mark shouted over the deafening roar of the wind. "The lower engineering corridors are heavily compromised by thick chemical smoke. We have ten minutes before she breaks apart!"

Dustin secured his heavy tactical harness, locked his breathing mask over his face, and dropped onto the tilting, rain-slicked deck of the stranded hull.

He forced open a warped steel door at the end of the lower passageway. The air inside was an impenetrable wall of acrid black smoke.

Two figures were huddled against the bulkhead.

Dustin took two steps forward, and his boots stopped dead.

It was Elena.

She was kneeling in the rising bilge water, her white blouse smeared with soot, both arms wrapped tightly around Caleb Hayes as the younger man trembled against her shoulder.

Caleb—the project manager from her firm, the boy she had raised, put through Ivy League business school, and installed as a senior director after his sister died.

This was the urgent work that couldn't wait.

Elena looked up through the haze, seeing only a rescue captain in full gear, his identity entirely concealed by a dark polycarbonate visor.

She lunged forward, grabbing his forearm with a desperate grip.

"Help him! He can't breathe! Take off your mask and give it to him right now!"

Dustin looked down at his wife through the tinted glass. "Ma'am, protocol requires my team to secure the sector. Stand up and follow me to the ladder."

"I don't give a damn about your protocol!" Her voice cracked with furious authority. "Look at him! If anything happens to Caleb, I’ll make sure your career in this city is finished forever. Do you understand who I am?"

Something cold and heavy crystallized in Dustin’s chest.

"I need this regulator to stay conscious while—"

"He doesn't have time!"

Before he could pull his arm away, she struck out, her fingers snapping the emergency quick-release latch on his helmet with all her weight.

The rubber seal tore free, the metal edge slicing a deep, jagged line across Dustin’s cheek. Thick, toxic smoke instantly seared his throat, dropping him to one knee in a violent, choking fit.

Elena froze, the color draining completely from her face as the smoke cleared from his exposed features.

"Dustin?"

He raised his head, a thin line of dark blood dripping from his cheekbone. "Yes."

She recoiled, her composure instantly shattering. "I didn't know it was you under that gear. Dustin, I can explain—"

"Save it," he rasped, coughing through the heat as he shoved the detached mask toward Caleb. "Put it on. We're moving."

"Dustin, please, just listen—"

"I said later." He hauled himself up, his eyes hard. "Right now, getting both of you out of this hull is the only thing that matters."

Elena pressed her lips together, guilt flashing in her eyes, but she didn't offer a hand to help him up. Instead, she turned her attention entirely to Caleb, hauling the younger man to his feet.

Dustin led them into the smoke-choked corridor as superheated air pressed down from the overhead deck.

Halfway to the emergency escape hatch, the ship lurched violently as a massive wave struck the beam.

Overhead, a heavy steel equipment rack groaned, rusted bolts snapping before the metal frame swung down directly toward Elena.

"Look out!"

Dustin lunged, throwing his shoulder into Elena and shoving both her and Caleb through the hatchway just as the heavy frame crashed down.

A sickening crack echoed through the passage.

The iron rack slammed squarely across Dustin’s right shin, pinning him instantly to the deck. White-hot agony flared behind his eyes, tearing a sharp gasp from his throat.

Ice-cold seawater poured from a burst pipe overhead, swirling rapidly past his knees.

"Dustin!" Elena screamed from the dry landing on the other side.

He gritted his teeth, shoving his weight against the iron frame to free his shattered leg, and dragged himself up by the ladder rail. His lower leg hung uselessly at an unnatural angle.

"Elena," he called out, his voice tightly controlled despite the pain. "Take my arm. I can't bear weight on this leg."

She took a half-step forward, but Caleb suddenly cried out, clutching his wrist.

A jagged shard of metal had sliced a shallow cut across the back of Caleb's hand. A thin line of blood welled up against his skin, and the younger man paled instantly.

Elena’s focus snapped away from Dustin in an instant. She dropped to Caleb’s side, grabbing his wrist with both hands.

"You're bleeding. Let me see."

"It's nothing," Caleb whispered, shrinking back with a theatrical wince. "Just a scratch... go help him—"

"You're in shock," she insisted, her arms wrapping protectively around him. "Just breathe. I've got you."

Dustin stood braced against the bulkhead as freezing water climbed past his waist.

"Elena. He has a superficial scratch. My leg is broken, and I cannot climb the ladder alone."

"Caleb is a civilian," she replied without turning around to look at him. "He's never faced a disaster like this. You're a rescue captain, Dustin—you’ve survived worse a hundred times."

Dustin stared at the woman he had just shielded with his own body, the ache in his chest infinitely sharper than his shattered bone. "I broke my leg saving your life, Elena. You won't even pull me up?"

"I'll get him to safety first," she said, pulling Caleb’s arm over her shoulder without meeting his eyes. "Once we reach the deck, I'll send the recovery crew back down for you. Just hold on—you always manage."

She climbed the ladder, and the heavy steel hatch slammed shut overhead.

Dustin stood entirely alone in the rising tide, the sound of her footsteps fading into the howling storm above.

For five years, he had accepted being second to her ambition, her pride, and her perpetual guilt over another man. Even with a shattered limb and freezing water swallowing him whole, she still expected him to carry his own weight without complaint.

She hadn't loved him. She had simply relied on his infinite capacity to endure.

The water reached his chest, and burning debris hissed as it dropped through the open hatch.

He refused to die in this tomb.

Grip by agonizing grip, Dustin hauled himself up the vertical rungs of the ladder using only his arms. Every time his broken leg brushed the steel, white-hot pain radiated through his spine, but he silenced it with a cold, unyielding will.

He shoved the escape hatch open and collapsed onto the rain-lashed deck.

"Captain! The captain's out!" Mark roared over the gale, sprinting across the deck with the medical team. "Get a stretcher over here now!"

Dustin lay flat on the freezing metal, the rain washing the blood from his cheek as his vision began to blur at the edges.

"Where is Elena?" he forced the words past his raw throat.

Mark’s jaw tightened with bitter fury. "She took the corporate speedboat to the private hospital with that manager, Captain. She didn't even ask if you made it."

Dustin closed his eyes against the storm, letting the darkness pull him under.
