“You should ask your father that,” Adeline said, rolling her eyes. “He was the one who thought his plan was perfect enough to take down Duncan.”

Gerald let out a low chuckle. “It’s not about whether he falls for it. He’s still a man, and men have weaknesses. If you can’t seduce him, then at least make sure he marries you. Once he does, we’ll find a way to regain control.”

Maxine felt her stomach churn. This was absurd. They were discussing her life like she was some pawn on a chessboard, as if her existence only mattered in terms of what she could offer the family.

Before she could speak again, another voice cut in.

“I say we just kill Harold.”

The room went silent.

Richard, who had been mostly quiet up until now, leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping rhythmically against the table. “Think about it. Harold is the reason we’re in this mess. He let things spiral out of control, forcing us into a corner. If he were gone, we wouldn’t have to give up anything.”
