Amidst the flurry of black-suited bodyguards, a young girl was rushed into the hospital on a stretcher.

By her side, a tall, striking woman with long, flowing hair, clad in a sleek black dress and stockings, clutched the girl’s hand desperately.

Her voice trembled with emotion as she spoke, “Lyra Veylin, please be okay. I’m right here, and I promise I’ll save you no matter what.”

Even in the chaos, onlookers immediately recognized her.

She was Selene Veylin, heiress of the prestigious Veylin family, widely regarded as the city’s most stunning woman. In San Aurelia’s high society, Selene wasn’t just beautiful—she was considered a storm of elegance and danger, capable of commanding attention wherever she went.

“Ms. Veylin,” said Dr. Marcus Liu, the hospital’s deputy chief, rushing forward with a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Please don’t worry. Our hospital will do everything in our power to save your sister.”

The woman’s status and her family’s influence was unparalleled in San Aurelia.

Their presence demanded utmost respect and unwavering dedication from the hospital staff.

After her sister was wheeled into the emergency room, Selene Veylin turned to face the assembled team.

Tears still glistened on her flawless cheeks, but they did nothing to dull the authority she radiated. Every movement, every word, carried the weight of the Veylin name.

“Dr. Bracket, bring me your best doctor immediately. I have only one request: save Lyra. We will reward you generously afterward,” she said, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes.

The hospital’s deputy chief, Dr. Marcus Liu, bowed slightly, his expression solemn.

“For a member of the Veylin family, we’ll assemble our top team. With our chief doctor away, I will personally lead the operation,” he said.

Then, turning to the gathered staff, he added, “I’ll also need our most skilled attending physician to assist me.”

A ripple of excitement passed through the room.

Several doctors stepped forward, eager to prove themselves. The male physicians in particular wore eager, ambitious expressions, faces alight with anticipation.

It wasn’t just a chance to demonstrate skill.

It was a chance to shine before the city’s most influential family, perhaps even to catch the attention of Selene Veylin herself, the most desirable bachelorette in San Aurelia.

Dr. Jasper Lin, ever eager to impress, surged forward and addressed Selene directly.

“Ms. Veylin, you can call me Dr. Lin. With me on the case, Lyra will be in completely safe hands,” he said, chest puffed with confidence.

Selene’s brow furrowed, sharp and discerning.

“Dr. Bracket, is he truly your most skilled attending physician?” she asked, voice firm. “I insist on only the best. I hope you understand the stakes here.”

The deputy chief, Dr. Marcus Liu, hesitated. His gaze flicked involuntarily to the back of the crowd, where Evan Calder stood, calm and composed, his white coat flawless, posture perfect.

An elderly physician with graying hair leaned closer, voice low.

“Marcus, given the importance of the Veylin family, I think Calder would be a better choice than Lin.”

Another senior doctor, respected and no stranger to speaking the truth, added, “Dr. Liu, let Calder assist you. Everyone here knows his skills are exceptional he’s unmatched in this hospital.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened. He knew the truth.

Evan’s medical expertise far exceeded Lin’s.

But one thing held him back: Evan was his son.

His lips pressed into a thin line as he addressed Selene with a practiced calm.

“Ms. Veylin,” he said, tone measured, “Dr. Lin is indeed our most skilled attending physician. You can trust him completely.”

Evan’s expression remained neutral. Calm. Unmoved.

With Dr. Liu’s assurance, Selene saw no reason to argue.

“Very well, Dr. Liu… Dr. Lin,” she said, her voice firm but measured, “I’m counting on both of you to work your magic.”

Jasper Lin’s chest swelled with confidence.

“Rest assured, Ms. Veylin,” he said, striding forward, “I won’t let you—or your sister—down.”

As he entered the emergency room, he cast a smug glance toward Evan, silently gloating. Without Selene’s support, he believed Evan’s career would face an uphill battle from here on out.

Connections, after all, trumped skill in this hospital—or so he thought.

At the back of the crowd, one of the senior doctors, Dr. Howard Caine, gently patted Evan’s shoulder.

“Evan,” he murmured, “why didn’t you speak for yourself? This could have been a great opportunity for you.”

Another respected physician, Dr. Lena Farrow, stepped closer. “We’ve all seen your skills, your ethics,” she said quietly.

“It’s a shame that Lin’s family connections carried the day. Don’t let it get to you.”

Evan smiled softly, warmth in his gaze, but calm and unshaken.

“Thank you both,” he said. “But saving lives is a noble act, regardless of who performs it. As long as the patient recovers, that’s what truly matters.”

The two senior doctors exchanged uneasy glances as they walked away.

They knew how the hospital hierarchy worked. Connections often mattered as much as talent and Evan’s refusal to play politics might one day cost him.

Selene, still flanked by her bodyguards at the edge of the crowd, had been watching Evan Calder carefully.

Unlike the other doctors, who strutted forward with an eagerness to impress her, Evan remained in the background, calm, composed, almost unreadable. His posture, his quiet observation, told her that there was more to this man than met the eye.

She leaned toward her assistant, Maris Vale, her voice low and commanding.

“Quietly gather information about the top doctors at City General,” she whispered. “And find out the name of that doctor standing in the back.”

Maris nodded, disappearing into the crowd.

It didn’t take long for her to return, a scroll of papers and a tablet in hand, her face tight with suppressed anger.

“Miss,” she said, voice low but sharp, “it seems Dr. Liu may have misled us. Dr. Lin… he isn’t even close to being the best attending physician at the hospital. In fact, he doesn’t even rank among the top.”

Selene’s gaze cooled, sharp as ice, but her composure remained intact.

“That’s fine,” she replied evenly. “As long as Lyra is okay, I can overlook this… for now.”

Maris hesitated, then continued.

“The doctor you asked about… Dr. Evan Calder. Apparently, he’s exceptional. The staff I spoke to said his medical skills are among the best here—even surpassing those of many experienced senior doctors.”

Selene’s eyes widened slightly, a flicker of surprise crossing her otherwise controlled expression.

She had asked about Evan on a whim, out of curiosity. She had not expected him to be so outstanding, especially given his youth.

After all, medical mastery was a skill typically honed over decades. Yet here was a man, quiet and seemingly unremarkable at first glance, whose reputation and skill already rivaled the veterans of the hospital.

A spark of intrigue and perhaps something more ignited in Selene’s mind.

This was a man worth watching.

Maris Vale’s expression shifted from curiosity to barely-contained excitement.

“There’s more to Dr. Calder’s story, Ms. Veylin,” she added, leaning closer.

Selene’s lips curved into a faint, intrigued smile. “Do tell.”

Maris’s eyes sparkled as she continued.

“Do you remember the stunning CEO of Stevens‑Halston Corp? Her beauty is second only to yours, but like you, she’s admired by countless people. Rumor has it… she’s been keeping a boy toy around. And guess who it is?”

Selene’s eyes widened, a flicker of disbelief crossing her flawless features.

“You’re not suggesting it’s Dr. Calder… are you?”

Maris nodded, grinning. “The very same.

But poor Dr. Calder—word on the street is that the CEO just dumped him and is now engaged to Marcus Hale, the richest man in the city.”

Selene shook her head, a mix of admiration and disappointment in her gaze. “He’s so young… and so talented. If he’d focused on his career instead of being… a kept man, he might have been more appealing. Such a shame he chose the wrong path.”

Their whispered gossip was abruptly cut short as the emergency doors burst open.

Two nurses rushed out, panic etched into every line of their faces.

“It’s an emergency!” one yelled. “The patient’s vitals are dropping rapidly! She’s barely breathing!”

Honestly, it doesn’t look that impressive to me.”The deputy chief’s face went rigid. He wanted nothing more than to shake some sense into his foolish son. His voice hissed through clenched teeth:“You fool! Just shut up! Haven’t you embarrassed us enough already? That technique… it’s legendary. Ancient healers reclusive, almost mythical were said to manipulate life itself with a single touch. They could take life or save it, controlling the flow of a person’s energy as if it were their own.” Even Selene, sharp-minded and well-versed in medical knowledge herself, felt her composure crack. She had seen countless procedures, brilliant surgeons, and innovative techniques, yet she had never w

What’s happening to my sister?”The emergency doors slid open again.Dr. Brackett stepped out, his white coat stained, his expression heavy. Beside him stood Dr. Harris, eyes bloodshot, jaw clenched.“I’m sorry, Ms. Veylin,” Brackett said hoarsely. “Ms. Lysara’s condition has deteriorated. We’ve done everything within our capacity.”Harris stepped forward quickly, panic bleeding into irritation. “The initial response was stable. Her vitals even improved but then her breathing collapsed without warning. This isn’t incompetence, Ms. Veylin. It’s an impossible case.”He didn’t finish his sentence.Smack.The sound cracked through the corridor like a gunshot.Harris staggered back, one hand flying to his cheek, eyes wide with disbelief.“You idiot,” Selene hissed, her body trembling with fury. “Didn’t you just boast that she was safe?
