Chapter 1
Chapter 1
“Is this all what our years together worth to you?”
Evan Calder sat rigid in the chair opposite her desk, his clothes plain, almost out of place in the glass-and-steel splendor of the office. “Just a string of numbers.”
The check lay untouched on the polished surface between them. Evan didn’t look at it. He didn’t need to..
Across from him, Madeline Stevens sat behind the CEO’s desk of Stevens-Halston Group, her family’s newly public conglomerate. Black lace hugged her frame with effortless elegance. Her posture was flawless. Her eyes were cold—professional, distant, final.
“I’m sorry, Evan,” she said evenly. “But I can’t marry you.”
The words landed cleanly. No hesitation or remorse.
Evan stared at her, disbelief tightening his chest. “What?” His voice came out hoarse.
“Madeline, what are you saying? What about everything we planned? The promises?”
They two were supposed to get married the day Steven-Halston went public.
Madeline exhaled, brushing a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“Since we’re ending this,” she said, “I’ll be honest.”
Evan’s fingers curled slowly against the armrest.
“Don’t you feel it?” she continued. “The distance. It’s grown too wide. We don’t belong in the same world anymore.” Her gaze sharpened. “Forcing this marriage wouldn’t help you. And for me… it would be a burden.”
A burden!
The word echoed in Evan’s mind, hollow and unreal.
He almost laughed.
Without him, Stevens-Halston wouldn’t exist. When her family was on the edge of collapse, it was Evan who restructured their failing assets, negotiated lifelines, and dragged the company back from bankruptcy. He had built Madeline’s rise with sleepless nights and silent sacrifices.
And now—
“I know this is difficult for you,” Madeline said, her tone softening just enough to sound merciful. “Think of this as settling what I owe you.”
She opened her designer purse, pulled out a pen and another check.
“I’ll compensate you properly. Just name it. A cash, a villa, a luxury car. Enough for you to live comfortably for the rest of your life.”
The pen moved smoothly across the paper.
3.5 million.
Evan watched in silence.
Madeline’s flawless features flickered just for a heartbeat before settling back into practiced indifference.
“If you think it’s not enough,” she said calmly, “I can add more. Name your price.”
Evan Calder stared at her.
The pain in his eyes had nothing to do with money, yet she’d mistaken it all the same.
“So you’re really set on walking away from this marriage?” he asked quietly.
Madeline pressed her lips together and turned toward the floor-to-ceiling window, the skyline of San Aurelia stretching endlessly beyond the glass.
“If that’s how you choose to see it,” she replied, voice cool, distant, “then I have nothing more to say.”
She was the youngest female CEO in the city’s financial circle, worth over two hundred million dollars, admired, desired, chased. The media called her San Aurelia’s golden girl.
From any angle, Evan no longer fit into her world.
Not socially.
Not financially.
Not even intellectually at least, not in her eyes.
This marriage was never what Madeline truly wanted.
It was too ordinary.
Evan let out a quiet breath. “So this is what it comes down to,” he said. “Years of love. Countless nights. Every breakfast and dinner I made when you were too exhausted to eat.” His gaze never left her reflection in the glass. “All of it is lost to the fear of being ordinary.”
Madeline didn’t turn around.
“It makes sense,” Evan continued, voice steady despite the ache spreading through his chest. “You’re the CEO of Stevens-Halston Corporation, San Aurelia’s pride, with admirers lining up just to breathe the same air. And me?” He smiled faintly. “I’m just a nobody. Clearly unworthy of the outstanding Ms. Stevens.”
A bitter chuckle escaped him.
Madeline finally frowned and looked back at him. “Evan, I admit you’ve done a lot for me. But this—this life you want it’s not what I want.” Her tone hardened. “Forget it. You wouldn’t understand, no matter how much I explain.”
She slid the check across the desk.
“Take the money. Consider it compensation for your efforts over the years.”
Evan didn’t even glance at it.
“A 4 million dollar breakup f*e?” he said lightly, though his eyes were cold now.
“How generous of you, Ms. Stevens.”
He pushed the check back.
“But I don’t need it.”
Evan rose from his chair and headed for the door.
The moment he turned his back, Madeline’s frown deepened.
“Evan,” she said sharply, “I strongly advise you to take the money. Don’t be a fool over pride.” Her gaze swept him from head to toe. “A small-time doctor like you could never earn that much in a lifetime.”
He didn’t slow down.
Truth was, a Four million dollars meant nothing to him but she would never believe that.
“Hold it right there.”
The voice cut through the room like a blade.
The door swung open and a woman dripping in diamonds and heavy perfume strode in, her heels striking the floor with authority. Flashy makeup. Expensive silk.
Contempt written plainly on her face.
Evan recognized her instantly.
“Aunt Vivian.”
The woman sneered. “Drop the ‘Aunt Vivian.’ We’re not that close.”
This was Vivian Lorraine Stevens—Madeline’s mother. The woman who would have become Evan’s mother-in-law.
“If you’re leaving,” Vivian continued coldly, “take your things with you. The Stevens family has no room for your junk.”
She reached into her purse, pulled out a small velvet box and a credit card, and tossed them onto the desk.
For a split second, something flickered across Evan’s face.
Then it froze.
Inside the box lay the engagement ring he had spent months choosing, elegant, exactly Madeline’s taste. The card beside it held the money he had saved for their wedding.
Even if the marriage was over… there had been no need for this.
“Aunt Vivian,” Evan said slowly, “you wanted this too?” His voice was calm, but tight. “I thought I’d always treated you with respect.”
Vivian let out a harsh laugh, sharp enough to scrape skin. “What’s wrong, Evan? Did I hit a nerve?”
“Mom, watch your mouth!” Madeline snapped, finally frowning.
Vivian waved her hand dismissively. “Enough. He should know his place.”
Her eyes raked over Evan with open disdain.
“A man without background, connections, or ambition,” she scoffed. “Did you really think you belonged in the Stevens family?”
But Vivian wasn’t finished.
“Why should I stop?” she scoffed. “He’s nothing but a dreamer chasing the impossible. Did he really think he could marry into our family? Not a chance.”
She leaned forward, lips curling.
“Oh, Evan there’s one more thing you should know.” Her eyes gleamed with cruel satisfaction. “Madeline will be engaged to Rowan Ashcroft once he returns from abroad.”
The name landed like a verdict.
“You’re not even in the same league as him,” Vivian continued. “Understand that?”
Mockery dripped from every word.
Evan’s gaze shifted to Madeline—cold, piercing, unreadable.
He hadn’t expected betrayal to come this neatly packaged. She’d already lined up his replacement before ending things with him.
Madeline didn’t meet his eyes.
But when she spoke, her voice was steady—resolute.
“The Ashcroft family is one of San Aurelia’s oldest houses,” she said. “Their influence spans the military, politics, and major industries. Generations of power. Unshakable.” She paused. “Rowan will inherit everything.”
Her fingers tightened subtly against the desk.
“An alliance between our families is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. For me… it’s a chance to transform my life.”
That was it.
Something inside Evan finally loosened.
The last thread snapped.
He smiled. Almost… amused.
“I see,” he said lightly. “Then allow this poor nobody to wish you and the Ashcroft family all the best in your social-climbing endeavors.”
With that, Evan walked out, never looking back, leaving behind no trace of attachment.
The door closed softly.
Too softly.
Madeline stared at the empty space where he’d stood, her chest tightening without warning. She’d expected anger.
Accusations. Even desperation when he heard Rowan’s name.
Instead, he had been calm. Detached. Almost… relieved.
It unsettled her.
“Mom,” she asked after a long moment, her voice lower than she intended, “do you think I went too far?”
Vivian scoffed immediately. “Too far? Please. That good-for-nothing thinking he could marry you—that’s what went too far.”
She laughed, satisfaction glinting in her eyes. “Just wait until Rowan gets back.
Once you’re engaged, the Stevens family will shoot straight into the top tier of San Aurelia’s elite.” She waved dismissively.
“As for Evan? He’s nothing. And thankfully, he knows his place. If he’d caused trouble, I would’ve taught him a lesson he’d never forget.”
Madeline didn’t respond.
Her gaze
drifted back to the door.
For the first time, an unfamiliar emptiness settled in her chest—quiet, heavy, irreversible.
Something irreplaceable had just walked out of her life.
And she hadn’t tried to stop it.

From Ordinary to Unstoppable Chapter 7
Evan’s voice remained calm, controlled, devoid of any hint of arrogance. He stood his ground as the scarred man and his thugs froze for a fraction of a second—then erupted into mocking laughter.“Ha! Did this pretty boy just tell me, Scareface, to get lost?” one thug jeered.“Idiot, you’ve been watching too many superhero movies. Trying to play the knight in shining armor, huh?” another sneered, tightening his grip on a steel pipe.“Boss, why waste time talking? Let’s just take him out!” a third thug shouted, swinging the pipe toward Evan’s head with full force.Ms. Selene exhaled sharply, her mind racing. She was about to leap forward herself when a piercing scream split the air.The thug who had struck first collapsed to the ground, clutching his stomach, eyes wide in terror. Somehow, Evan had seized the steel pipe from him in a move so fast it was almost invisible. In a blur of motion, Evan swung the pipe, each strike precise and devastating. Evan nodded slightly at the deputy chief, a subtle acknowledgment of the man’s rare insight. Even he hadn’t expected such recognition.Meanwhile, Dr. Lin, still trying to digest what had just happened, couldn’t resist showing off his ignorance. “Dad, what’s all this about a pressure-point technique? Honestly, it doesn’t look that impressive to me.”The deputy chief’s face went rigid. He wanted nothing more than to shake some sense into his foolish son. His voice hissed through clenched teeth:“You fool! Just shut up! Haven’t you embarrassed us enough already? That technique… it’s legendary. Ancient healers reclusive, almost mythical were said to manipulate life itself with a single touch. They could take life or save it, controlling the flow of a person’s energy as if it were their own.” Even Selene, sharp-minded and well-versed in medical knowledge herself, felt her composure crack. She had seen countless procedures, brilliant surgeons, and innovative techniques, yet she had never w

Selene Veylin’s face drained of color.“What did you just say?” Her voice dropped to a razor-thin calm. “Where is Dr. Brackett? What’s happening to my sister?”The emergency doors slid open again.Dr. Brackett stepped out, his white coat stained, his expression heavy. Beside him stood Dr. Harris, eyes bloodshot, jaw clenched.“I’m sorry, Ms. Veylin,” Brackett said hoarsely. “Ms. Lysara’s condition has deteriorated. We’ve done everything within our capacity.”Harris stepped forward quickly, panic bleeding into irritation. “The initial response was stable. Her vitals even improved but then her breathing collapsed without warning. This isn’t incompetence, Ms. Veylin. It’s an impossible case.”He didn’t finish his sentence.Smack.The sound cracked through the corridor like a gunshot.Harris staggered back, one hand flying to his cheek, eyes wide with disbelief.“You idiot,” Selene hissed, her body trembling with fury. “Didn’t you just boast that she was safe? With their relationship over, he saw no reason to answer. The call dropped. Then rang again. He sighed and picked up.“Evan, listen to me. I know you did this to make me happy, but did you even think about the consequences?” Her tone hardened with what she clearly believed was righteousness. “Turn yourself in now—while there’s still time. Don’t worry. With the company’s influence in the city, I’ll do my best to keep you out of jail.”Disappointment laced every word.Evan finally understood. She thought he h

In the elevator, Evan Calder opened the modest ring box.A dazzling pink diamond caught the harsh light, scattering sparks across the cramped space. Its brilliance was impossible to ignore.
