Chapter 5: One Name Remembered

Jonny woke to the shrill ringing of his alarm.

Beep! Beep! Beep!

He groaned and slapped his phone until the noise stopped. The first thing he saw wasn't the cracked ceiling, It was the floating blue window.

Main Quest

Become Recognized by 100 Unique People

Progress:0/100

Time Remaining:5 Days 13 Hours 18 Minutes

----------------

Jonny sighed heavily.

"...Still zero."

His eyes drifted toward his phone lying on the bedside table.

Maybe... Just Maybe his video had exploded overnight.

His heart pounded with cautious excitement as he unlocked the screen, He opened the app.Three views, Still zero likes, zero comments, zero new followers.

"Guess the algorithm hates me." He murmured.

The familiar notification appeared.

[Correction. The algorithm is functioning normally. Your content just failed to capture attention.]

"Thanks for the emotional support." Jonny said rolling his eyes

After a quick shower and an even quicker breakfast consisting of two slices of bread, Jonny left for work.

The streets bustled with life.

Students hurried to school.

Office workers rushed toward train stations and street vendors shouted today's specials.

Golden strands of Attention Energy drifted through the air like invisible threads. Rvery conversation, every greeting, every smile. The city was alive with connections.

"So everyone is constantly exchanging Attention Energy..." He asked

[Affirmative.]

"Then why does my quest still say zero?"

[Temporary attention fades quickly. Recognition requires memory.]

"Memory?" Jonny frowned

[To generate lasting Fame Points, an individual must remember you after the interaction has ended.]

"So if someone forgets me five minutes later..."

[No Fame is generated.]

"...That's brutal." He said, whilst he waited for the traffic light to change, he noticed an elderly woman standing on the curb.

She carried three heavy grocery bags. One of the plastic handles suddenly snapped.Fruit rolled across the sidewalk.

The old woman sighed and slowly bent down.

Without thinking, Jonny walked over.

"Let me help." He said

The woman looked up in surprise. "Oh, dear... you don't have to." She replied.

"It's okay." He knelt and gathered the scattered oranges and apples before placing them into the remaining bags."They're heavier than they look."

"They certainly are." She chucked

Jonny picked up all three bags."I'll carry them."

"Oh, I couldn't ask you to do that." She said

"You didn't." He added. "I offered."

She smiled warmly. "Young people don't usually stop anymore."

They crossed the street together.

Her apartment building was only a few minutes away.

Along the way she talked about everything.

Her grandchildren. Her aching knees and hoow expensive groceries had become.

Jonny mostly listened. It was... strangely relaxing.

When they finally reached the entrance, she accepted the bags with grateful hands.

"Thank you." She said as she looked directly into his eyes."What was your name, young man?"

Jonny hesitated.

"...Jonny."

"Jonny...?"

"Jonny Saint."

"Jonny Saint." She repeated it softly. Then she smiled. "I'll remember that."

The moment those words left her mouth, a bright chime echoed inside his mind.and a golden window burst open before him.

"...That's it?" He asked as he looked at the apartment door in disbelief. "I didn't fight a monster, I didn't make a viral video, I just... helped someone."

[Correct.]

"So...This counted more than my video?"

[Correct.]

"Why?"

[Attention born from sincerity possesses greater stability than attention born from curiosity.

Jonny stood silently.]

"I think..." He added "I've been doing this all wrong."

As he walked toward the warehouse, the System displayed another message.

[Host has discovered the First Principle of Fame.

Being noticed is easy.

Being remembered is difficult.]

Jonny read those words twice.

Then a third time."...That's actually pretty deep."

His grin grew wider. "This... This is my first real step." He thought to himself as he entered the warehouse, he failed to notice a pair of eyes watching him from the second-floor office.

A woman in a dark business suit lowered her binoculars.

"That's strange..." She frowned.

She had been observing the flow of mana around the city all morning.

For just a brief second, she had sensed an entirely unfamiliar energy surrounding an ordinary warehouse worker.

"...Who are you, Jonny Saint?"
