Chapter 9

The woman hadn’t toned down her voice, so Megan heard her loud and clear.

A staff member who’d done the same turned to look the woman over. When she saw the chef-stained apron, she immediately frowned and quickly came to a biased assumption.

“If you’re looking to rent an apartment, this is not the right place to do it.”

Surprised, the woman turned to her. “I was told this is a real estate agency.”

“It is. But Wards Royal Estate has nothing the likes of you can afford,” the staff scoffed, turning to face her squarely.

“Excuse me?” The woman blurted out in surprise, wiping her hands again on her apron.

Seeing this, Megan thinned her lips, taking her time to look the woman over as well.

She wore a hair bonnet and a mouth guard. The oily chef’s apron already said enough about her profession, but the thick smell of smoke oozing from her made Megan rethink.

If this woman worked in a hotel, she wouldn’t reek of such thick smoke. So if she didn’t, then she likely worked in a dump or somewhere out in the streets.

Really, someone like that couldn’t afford the cheapest apartment they had here.

Lifting her chin proudly, she nodded in agreement to the staff, “She’s right. You walked into the wrong place. If you’re looking to rent a low-budget apartment, the real estate company on the next street handles that.”

At this, the woman’s brows quirked up in amusement. “Are you… asking me to leave?”

Megan frowned and leaned forward. “We’re not asking you to leave. We’re merely telling you you can’t afford the houses we have.”

To be honest, she was annoyed and embarrassed that she had greeted such a person so eagerly without giving her a proper once-over.

And for what?

No, not you? He said she’d be prettier?

How ingratiating. Celebrities were compared to each other all the time, but fans always made sure not to compare their looks because everyone was beautiful in their own way.

But this person, who probably worked in some greasy kitchen, had the audacity to stare at her and decide she wasn’t pretty enough?

Who knew if she even had the connection to work in a greasy kitchen with a proper roof!

Upon getting her approval, the staff got bolder and stepped forward.

“I’m going to have to ask you to leave, ma’am. I wouldn’t want to concern security with a small issue like this one.”

Her voice was loud enough to attract attention from the back, prompting Ian to let go of Selene and strut over, confused.

“Ask who to leave? Why do you have to involve security? What’s going on here?”

At this, the staff eagerly explained everything to him. When she was done, he immediately threw a glare the woman’s way.

“Hey, my sister is a celebrity. She knows how to read people. If she says you can’t afford anything we have, then you can’t afford anything we have.”

“So unless you want to be embarrassed, do yourself a favor and get out of here before I security do it for you!”

Frowning, the woman was about to leave when something vibrated in her pocket.

She had left in a rush and didn’t remember putting anything in it, so hesitantly, she reached for the source of the vibration

To her surprise, it was her cellphone and it had vibrated because of a message.

Reading the message sprawled across her screen from the man she’d spoken to earlier, she promptly raised her eyes at the mention of a redhead.

A redhead.

Well, this rude man was a redhead.

But he said the woman was a redhead as well. Let’s see…

She glanced around for a moment, then sucked her teeth when she didn’t see anyone else with red hair.

Could she have really come to the wrong place?

Usually, she had people do this sort of thing for her, but she just happened to have a cooking show nearby and decided to use this one hour break she had to come here.

Furthermore, she felt coming in person would speed up the process. Because she was in such a rush to buy the house and get back, she hadn’t bothered changing out of her apron.

Sighing, she slipped the phone back into her pocket and proceeded to step out of the building.

She had just taken three steps away when someone called out softly behind her.

“Excuse me, ma’am.”

“I made a mistake, I’ll go to the estate office on the next stre… Oh, you have red hair.” At first, she sighed tiredly as she turned, only to freeze the next second when she saw Selene standing in front of her, her red hair gleaming in the sun.

“I apologize for their behavior and beg that you don’t rate Wards Royal Estate badly, even if you do decide never to come back,” Selene said, not catching the surprise in the woman’s expression as she lowered her head in apology.

But the woman only looked her over.

Soft-spoken. 167cm. Redhead. Petite.

There was no doubt about it.

Not hearing anything from her, Selene raised her head ready to shoulder the insults usually thrown her way, but to her surprise…

“I want you to walk me through the houses you have. I’ll buy one.”

The woman spoke slowly, enunciating so perfectly she knew she wasn’t making up the words she heard.

Several people who had experienced similar treatment from Megan and Ian often stormed out enraged and humiliated.

Ninety-five percent of the time, they slapped her, calling her shameless for having the guts to come after them when she hadn’t said a word inside.

But what could she do? Their father’s orders were clear.

His children were still young and tended to get emotional when they felt someone was trying to get the better of them.

Her job was to stand aside and do nothing until they were done, then rush after the client to apologize on their behalf.

It maintained the company’s image that rudeness from a few didn’t represent the whole company.

Nevertheless, this was the first time someone not only responded kindly but wanted to return inside to buy a house.

As a result, she froze for a while before she hurriedly lowered her eyes and pointed toward the building, “Uh, sure. Please come with me.”

Inside, Megan and Ian were joking with the staff when they saw Selene walk in with the woman again.

Instantly, Megan sat up, her face reddening with anger.“What are you doing?”“I came to buy a house. Why do you seem to have a problem with that?” A question originally directed at Selene was answered by the woman as she whipped her head around to stare stoically at Megan. Megan’s face instantly darkened.“What is this? It’s not that I have a problem with you embarrassing yourself, I just have a problem with you wasting our time.”Then she paused and threw a death glare Selene’s way. “And you… you heard everything that happened here, yet you went out and called her back in? What do you know about customers that Ian and I don’t?” Before Selene could respond in her own defense, the woman, who hadn’t shown a single sign of aggression earlier, regarded Megan coldly.“She didn’t call me back in. I told her I want to buy a house. Why are you being so rude?”“R–rude? Since when does telling people to know their place translate to being rude?” Megan was first taken aback before she huffed,

When Selene Ward woke up the next morning, the first thing she heard was what happened last night and the decisions her parents had made without her input. At breakfast, Barbara continued in irritation, “Your grandfather is going out on a limb to keep you in the company. Work hard and don’t make his efforts go to waste.”“If you have to do some things with those rich scions to get them to buy a house, make sure you get their signatures on the documents first. And secondly, make sure they’re not taping anything with your face in it.”Scraping his chair back, Benjamin Ward stood and threw a stern glance at his daughter.“You’re way prettier than your cousins, so I know you can get any man you want if you put your heart into it. For once in your life, listen to your mother and me.”“If you don’t do whatever it takes to get a signature on that document, I’ll curse you forever for making my already miserable life even more miserable.”Kicking her feet in the air aggressively, Barbara glare

Dante’s arm shot out, grabbed it, and casually lifted and tossed a man weighing 180kg behind him.Three minutes later, he dragged the tenth unconscious man to the wall, then tapped on the window.“I just need you to call the home of Michael Slater and hand me the phone.”At this, the cowering man inside did as told and threw out the phone.“I’m not expecting any visitors. If there’s anyone there who claims to be from me, send them away,” the sleepy, scruffy voice of a man filtered through the receiver as soon as the call connected.“Mick, in three weeks, I need you to find someone who’ll buy an apartment from Wards Royal Estate.”There was a brief silence on the other end before the voice sharpened, disbelief oozing through it as he stuttered, “S-Supreme Commander Wynn?”Resting on the wall, Dante sucked in his teeth, “Look at your surveillance footage and tell me if there’s anyone bold enough to cause such a scene outside Phase 3.”For almost a minute, the other end was so silent tha

“She already went to the hospital, I’m sure she just needs to sleep to be fine.” Barbara hurriedly nodded, agreeing with him. Unfolding his arms, a thought suddenly occurred to Ian and his eyes shot toward Alaric. “Now that I think of it, wasn’t Selene slacking off at work this week? Grandfather, I think she did this on purpose to get medical leave!”“Ah, how cunning. If she wanted time off, she could’ve just asked. I’m certain father would’ve been glad to give her leave… permanently.” Megan chimed in with a snort. Barbara panicked. After falling out of favor with his father, Benjamin Ward’s income, considerably reduced. But as the young person in the household, Selene earned three times more than him and sustained the family with it. So at the thought of their source of livelihood being taken away, Barbara’s eyes snapped toward Megan fearfully. “Don’t talk like that, Megan. You’ve known Selene since she was born. She’s too hardworking for that.”Feeling the bridge of her nose
