Chapter 8

When Selene Ward woke up the next morning, the first thing she heard was what happened last night and the decisions her parents had made without her input.

At breakfast, Barbara continued in irritation, “Your grandfather is going out on a limb to keep you in the company. Work hard and don’t make his efforts go to waste.”

“If you have to do some things with those rich scions to get them to buy a house, make sure you get their signatures on the documents first. And secondly, make sure they’re not taping anything with your face in it.”

Scraping his chair back, Benjamin Ward stood and threw a stern glance at his daughter.

“You’re way prettier than your cousins, so I know you can get any man you want if you put your heart into it. For once in your life, listen to your mother and me.”

“If you don’t do whatever it takes to get a signature on that document, I’ll curse you forever for making my already miserable life even more miserable.”

Kicking her feet in the air aggressively, Barbara glared at her daughter hostilely.

“If only you’d listened to us in the first place and gotten a nice man like your cousin Megan, your father wouldn’t be working this hard at his age, and I wouldn’t need to suck up to your second uncle’s repulsive wife all the time.”

“Your uncle, aunt and third niece had to stay back this time, so we can trust that your cousins won’t reach out to their father anytime soon.”

“In the meantime, you better do your absolute best so Megan and Ian’s father don’t think you’re an absolute deadweight to this family and cut you off at work, you hear me?!”

Two seats away from Selene, Dante listened to them, his signature goofy smile on his face as he watched the husband and wife leave the house.

A moment later, Selene got up and headed back to her room.

Like the human pet he had made himself to be, he followed after her. From a corner, he watched her take her anti-depressants, then tossed his drugs at him.

“Take two now, at two in the afternoon, and at six in the evening. Eat before taking them. I’ll know if you don’t,” she enunciated, pointing at the wall clock as she gave the instructions.

He nodded as usual, and to show her he understood, took two.

After she dressed and left for work, he was alone as usual in the South Wing.

Sighing, he sat on the bed, his thought flashing back to the mercenaries last night.

Given how one killed with the sniper and took off, it was two different mercenaries.

He was probably around watching if he was really still a madman.

As Supreme Commander, he naturally amassed enemies everywhere he went, so it could be anyone who heard he had returned and was using the opportunity to strike.

That meant he couldn’t touch the money in his bank account, or he’d risk alerting everyone.

In the end, he still had to rely on the contact Michael Slater gave him.

So he pulled out the paper from last night and called the number.

“You must be the friend Mick said would contact me. He said to buy it in three weeks, but I might’ve left my kids unsupervised for a moment, and they set our house on fire… so I need it like today.” The tired voice of a woman seeped out as the call connected.

“Wards Royal Estate. Look for and only Selene Ward.”

Meanwhile, at Wards Royal Estate, Selene was made to stand at the far end of the showing room, at the table with the most luxurious houses.

It was the place least visited, as it had the priciest listings.

Three tables before hers, sat Ian with some staffs crowding around him.

Picking his nose, he blew on the finger before raising his eyes toward her.

“Selene, I called the doctor last night to fix you after you failed to take your life, and now I’m placing you here to help you fulfill Grandfather’s task.”

“Though you still have a month to find clients, I thought it’d be better to place you here early so we don’t get any excuses when you fail to deliver.”

As the next heir and third chair of Wards Royal Estate, Ian naturally had a lot of minions who helped him pick on Selene as well.

Hearing him, they giggled.

“Oh, you’re so nice to your cousin, Ian, but doesn’t it worry you that she’s so unappreciative?”

“Tell me about it. Even a simple ‘thank you’ would be fine.”

“I don’t know why you even bother with her. If she wasn’t family, I’d have asked the company to let her go.”

Ian swung his feet proudly from the pedestal they put him before informing, “You’re right. That’s why Grandfather gave her the task of selling more than one hundred million before the end of this month. If she doesn’t, he’ll kick her out.”

“We haven’t had a sale that big in over two years. She doesn’t even leave the office. How’s she supposed to sell a house that expensive?” Someone questioned, genuinely dumbfounded.

The man chortled and hopped off the desk, strutting toward Selene.

Wrapping his arm around her neck, he shoved her head down and cackled.

“Wasn’t it a year ago that she caused a ruckus after I got Employee of the Year, saying she deserved it because she worked her butt off all year long?”

“Surely, someone who thinks she deserves Employee of the Year can bring in a buyer for an expensive house. Or don’t you think so, Selene?”

Selene winced, but said nothing.

She had lived with Ian long enough to know the more she spoke, the more reason he found to bully her.

The last thing she needed was having him twist anything she said to their grandfather.

“This hypocrite. She only talks when Grandpa’s around to show off. She simply refuses to say a word as long as he’s nowhere in sight,” Megan hissed from the front table.

She had just finished when a woman wearing a white chef’s apron stained with cooking oil, hurried into the building.

Immediately, she jumped to her feet and flashed a wide smile.

“Welcome to Wards Royal Estate. How may I help you?”

The moment she stepped inside, the woman’s brain seemed to empty out and she quickly forgot everything the man earlier had told her over the phone.

Looking Megan over, she smacked her lips thoughtfully and pulled back.

“No, not you. He said she’s really pretty.”

Instantly, Megan sat up, her face reddening with anger.“What are you doing?”“I came to buy a house. Why do you seem to have a problem with that?” A question originally directed at Selene was answered by the woman as she whipped her head around to stare stoically at Megan. Megan’s face instantly darkened.“What is this? It’s not that I have a problem with you embarrassing yourself, I just have a problem with you wasting our time.”Then she paused and threw a death glare Selene’s way. “And you… you heard everything that happened here, yet you went out and called her back in? What do you know about customers that Ian and I don’t?” Before Selene could respond in her own defense, the woman, who hadn’t shown a single sign of aggression earlier, regarded Megan coldly.“She didn’t call me back in. I told her I want to buy a house. Why are you being so rude?”“R–rude? Since when does telling people to know their place translate to being rude?” Megan was first taken aback before she huffed,

The woman hadn’t toned down her voice, so Megan heard her loud and clear.A staff member who’d done the same turned to look the woman over. When she saw the chef-stained apron, she immediately frowned and quickly came to a biased assumption.“If you’re looking to rent an apartment, this is not the right place to do it.”Surprised, the woman turned to her. “I was told this is a real estate agency.”“It is. But Wards Royal Estate has nothing the likes of you can afford,” the staff scoffed, turning to face her squarely.“Excuse me?” The woman blurted out in surprise, wiping her hands again on her apron.Seeing this, Megan thinned her lips, taking her time to look the woman over as well. She wore a hair bonnet and a mouth guard. The oily chef’s apron already said enough about her profession, but the thick smell of smoke oozing from her made Megan rethink. If this woman worked in a hotel, she wouldn’t reek of such thick smoke. So if she didn’t, then she likely worked in a dump or somewhere

Dante’s arm shot out, grabbed it, and casually lifted and tossed a man weighing 180kg behind him.Three minutes later, he dragged the tenth unconscious man to the wall, then tapped on the window.“I just need you to call the home of Michael Slater and hand me the phone.”At this, the cowering man inside did as told and threw out the phone.“I’m not expecting any visitors. If there’s anyone there who claims to be from me, send them away,” the sleepy, scruffy voice of a man filtered through the receiver as soon as the call connected.“Mick, in three weeks, I need you to find someone who’ll buy an apartment from Wards Royal Estate.”There was a brief silence on the other end before the voice sharpened, disbelief oozing through it as he stuttered, “S-Supreme Commander Wynn?”Resting on the wall, Dante sucked in his teeth, “Look at your surveillance footage and tell me if there’s anyone bold enough to cause such a scene outside Phase 3.”For almost a minute, the other end was so silent tha

“She already went to the hospital, I’m sure she just needs to sleep to be fine.” Barbara hurriedly nodded, agreeing with him. Unfolding his arms, a thought suddenly occurred to Ian and his eyes shot toward Alaric. “Now that I think of it, wasn’t Selene slacking off at work this week? Grandfather, I think she did this on purpose to get medical leave!”“Ah, how cunning. If she wanted time off, she could’ve just asked. I’m certain father would’ve been glad to give her leave… permanently.” Megan chimed in with a snort. Barbara panicked. After falling out of favor with his father, Benjamin Ward’s income, considerably reduced. But as the young person in the household, Selene earned three times more than him and sustained the family with it. So at the thought of their source of livelihood being taken away, Barbara’s eyes snapped toward Megan fearfully. “Don’t talk like that, Megan. You’ve known Selene since she was born. She’s too hardworking for that.”Feeling the bridge of her nose
