Chapter 16: The Man in the Crowd
Domingo's voice in Rafi's ear stayed low and clipped, professional despite the chaos threading underneath it. "East entrance, gray jacket, moving toward the terrace. Two of my men are already converging. I need you to stay exactly where you are and keep smiling, sir. Do not follow."
Rafi kept the champagne glass loose in his hand and smiled at Elena as though nothing in the world had changed, though every muscle in his body had gone taut beneath the tailored jacket. "You'll have to excuse me," he said smoothly. "I should let the newly engaged couple enjoy their evening without an audience."
He drifted toward the terrace with unhurried steps, the practiced calm of a man refreshing his drink, while behind his eyes he tracked every possible exit the way Domingo had drilled into him over the past three days. The terrace doors stood open to the golf course beyond, string lights strung between old acacia trees, a scattering of guests smoking and laughing in small, oblivious clusters.
He found the disturbance at the far end, past the light, where two of Domingo's men had the gray-jacketed man pinned against a low stone wall with the kind of quiet, efficient violence designed not to draw attention from fifty meters away. The man wasn't struggling. That, more than anything, told Rafi exactly what kind of professional he was dealing with.
"Mr. Villaroman." Domingo appeared at his elbow, voice pitched for Rafi alone. "We need to move him somewhere private before someone notices."
They walked the man through a service corridor behind the kitchens, past startled catering staff who wisely said nothing, into a small storage room that smelled of cleaning chemicals and cut flowers. Under the flat fluorescent light, Rafi finally got a clear look at the face he'd only seen before in grainy surveillance footage — unremarkable, forgettable, the kind of face built for exactly this line of work.
"You were in my house," Rafi said. "Wired the second floor bathroom yourself, if I remember the crew schedule correctly."
The man said nothing, his expression carefully, professionally blank.
"Who do you work for."
Still nothing. Domingo stepped forward with quiet menace, but the man's eyes didn't so much as flicker toward him, fixed instead on Rafi with an unsettling, patient stillness that reminded Rafi uncomfortably of Antonio's own careful calm.
"You don't understand what you're carrying," the man finally said, voice flat, almost bored. "None of you ever do. Your grandfather didn't either, in the end."
Something cold moved through Rafi's chest. "What does that mean."
The man's hand moved fast — not toward a weapon, but toward his own collar, yanking free a thin chain Rafi hadn't noticed beneath his shirt. Domingo lunged, too late. By the time he'd wrestled the man's arm still, the chain had already snapped free and clattered to the concrete floor between them, a small brass token spinning once before settling.
Rafi crouched and picked it up. A symbol pressed into the metal — three interlocking circles, incomplete, one segment of the design sheared away as though the token itself had been broken deliberately from something larger.
"What is this," Rafi asked, but the man had already gone slack in Domingo's grip, eyes rolling back, foam gathering faintly at the corner of his mouth.
"He's seizing," Domingo said sharply, lowering the man to the floor. "Something in his mouth — a capsule, had to be, I didn't even see him—"
By the time the ambulance Domingo's men called arrived twenty minutes later, discreetly, through the service entrance, there was nothing left to save. Rafi stood in the storage room long after the body had been carried away, the broken brass token cold in his palm, and understood with sick clarity that whatever organization he'd stumbled into a war with, it valued silence more than the lives of the people it sent to gather information.

Chapter 20: Not Just NatureThey spread everything across the study desk in the gray hour before dawn — the burned letter, the brass token, Domingo's notebook full of clean identities that weren't, a timeline none of them particularly wanted to look at directly."Say that again," Rafi said. "Slowly, and don't soften it for me.""I think the solar event is connected to the Concord's collapse," Antonio said. "I think whoever fractured it twenty years ago wasn't simply hunting artifacts for their own sake. I think they were building toward exactly what's coming in ninety-one days — or something close enough to it that they've spent two decades preparing to survive what the rest of the world won't.""That's not possible," Domingo said flatly, arms crossed. "A solar event isn't something four Keepers and a dead grandfather can cause or prevent from a house in Dasmariñas.""I didn't say caused," Antonio said, unbothered by the pushback. "I said connected. There's a difference, and I don't f

Chapter 19: The Second ClockAntonio arrived before sunrise, coat thrown hastily over what looked like sleepwear, and listened to the full account of the night's events with the stillness of a man absorbing something he'd been dreading for weeks and hoping, against his better judgment, never to hear."He mentioned my grandfather," Rafi said, watching Antonio's face closely. "Said he didn't understand what he was carrying either, not until the end. What does that mean, Antonio. Be honest with me this time."Antonio was quiet long enough that Domingo, leaning against the study wall, shifted his weight in obvious impatience."It means your grandfather learned something in his final months that he never had time to pass on to you properly," Antonio said finally. "I suspected as much when the letter surfaced. I hoped I was wrong.""You said the Concord was four pieces. Four Keepers." Rafi leaned forward across the desk. "The man tonight said it wasn't broken by accident. Said someone made

Chapter 18: First Blood"Sir. Sir, wake up."Rafi came awake to Domingo's hand on his shoulder and the distant, controlled crackle of gunfire beyond the garden wall."How many," Rafi demanded, already swinging his legs off the bed."Four confirmed, rear service gate. They cut the primary sensors, but the backup floodlights caught them cold." Domingo's radio crackled with clipped, overlapping updates Rafi couldn't fully parse. "Panic room. Now, sir. That's not a request.""I want to know what's happening out there.""You'll know everything in five minutes. Right now I need you alive to hear it." Domingo's voice left no room for argument, and for once Rafi didn't push back."Team two, report," Domingo barked into the radio, already moving Rafi toward the reinforced door."Contact at the service gate, four hostiles, exchanging fire. Floodlights active, they're pinned in the open.""Casualties.""None on our side. Confirmed hit on at least one hostile.""Copy. Continue containment, do not

Chapter 17: Grace's TruthGrace was already seated when Rafi arrived at the coffee shop, a cup going cold in front of her, untouched. She didn't look up until he sat down across from her, and when she finally did, her eyes went straight to the folded photograph in his hand before either of them said a word."You know," she said quietly."I know something." Rafi slid the photograph across the table. "I want to know everything."Grace stared at it for a long moment, and Rafi watched her hands — steady through every transaction of the last two weeks, through millions of pesos moved without hesitation — begin, very slightly, to shake."Three weeks ago," she said. "Two men. Very polite. The kind of polite that's worse than a threat, because you understand immediately that the threat is only being withheld as a courtesy, and could be reinstated at any moment they choose.""What did they want.""Numbers. Where your money was moving. How much, how fast, which channels." Her jaw tightened. "Th

# Chapter 15: The Engagement PartyThe invitation arrived by courier on a Tuesday, embossed in gold foil expensive enough that Rafi knew before he opened it exactly whose handwriting he'd find on the card inside.*The Dela Fuente and Aranzanso families request the pleasure of your company in celebrating the engagement of Marco Antonio Dela Fuente and Cristina Isabel Aranzanso. December, at the Manila Polo Club.*Rafi turned the card over twice, half-expecting some kind of trick, before he understood that there wasn't one. Marco genuinely hadn't thought to leave him off the guest list — or worse, had thought about it and decided that inviting the ex-husband of his soon-to-be-exposed mistress was exactly the kind of casual cruelty that suited him. The Dela Fuente family had known Rafi for nine years as Bel's steady, unremarkable husband, a man who showed up to obligatory functions and left early. There was no reason, in Marco's calculus, that this occasion should be any different. He ha
